Meets: 4th Sunday of the month at a member’s home

September
Todd Paulus, of Southern Arizona KA, is their new AKCA rep. They held their August meeting at the home of Noel and Debbie Shaw, just South of Vail. Most of the meeting was a discussion of things that have been done in preparation for the November Koi Show. The big news is that they did manage to get Larry Christensen to be their Judge for the Koi Show! That was VERY good news. Todd is also a new president so he still has a lot to learn on the road to do his best to find ways to enhance the organization and make it more interesting for more members. They discussed some of these issues, too. Next meeting will include some koi training on fall prep for their ponds from Noel Shaw, and a report from Dave Young on his trip with Debbie throughout Europe, catching some major koi shows.

August
Debby Young, of Southern Arizona KA, said that she is no longer the rep for her club.

July

March
Debby Young, of Southern Arizona KA, reports that they have their change of Officers this month. Vaquero, their local Ultra Balance Koi food retailer, will host their club for an informational gathering at their store. They hope to bring in the Star Milling representative to lecture on Koi Nutrition.

February
Debby Young, of Southern Arizona KA, reports they are trying to get their membership numbers up. They have produced a pamphlet handout for the nurseries/garden centers around town. They picked up several new members at their Koi Show in November, so now they need to get them to a meeting and become actively involved. They had hoped to have a pond tour this spring, but it appears that they will have to put it off until next year. March 1st will be their board elections.

January 2017
Debby Young, of Southern Arizona KA, reports their 37th Annual Koi Show went off without a hitch. Weather was fantastic. Over 100 koi in the competition. Grand Champion was a Kohaku owned by David Young. An article for KOI USA is being assembled by Heather Hale, a new member of their club. Their Christmas Party was a great time. Pot Luck on a Mexican theme. Santa brought all good koi keepers a Nobori.

November 2016
Debby Young, of Southern Arizona KA, said that they are running their 37th Annual Koi Show on November 12 & 13. Looking at the number of entrants and vendors, this should be one of their biggest shows. To help promote their vendors and remove the terror that novices have when deciding to compete, they are allowing any novice to purchase a koi from their vendors before 1 o’clock Saturday and register the fish directly onto the Novice Division of the show at no charge. Their Christmas party will be held December 11th. They will be having a pot luck and Santa will be coming.

Some members report algae problems this spring. Education at their last meeting was on ways to “balance” your pond chemistry. July meeting will be their annual Pot Luck BBQ.

May
Southern Arizona Koi Association reports that their next meeting will be at a member’s home that has just finished building an 18,000 gallon pond. This is his first pond. This member mentioned to me that he let his subscription to KOIUSA laps because he felt that there wasn’t enough
“beginner” articles and therefore of no use to him at this point in time, so he went to the Internet and to other club members for advice.  Also, our members would prefer KOIUSA as a subscription  “online magazine” or “downloadable to their tablets.  Debby mentioned that she would have preferred the “special events” forms had been attached to the minutes email, rather than having to “cut and paste” the link that was in the minutes. Note too that the forms were due 2 days after receipt of the minutes.

April
Debby Young, of Southern Arizona Koi Association, said that last month they did a membership drive, sending out individual invoices for the dues instead of putting the info in their newsletter and they offered packets of koi food for membership. In April, they had a “pond liner pulling” party. About 15 people came to help a new member place his 500 lb. – 34ftX50ft liner in the hole. The finished pond should be around 15,000 gallons. At their next meeting, they hope to have education on repotting water plants.
