Karla Haggi, of High Desert Koi Fanciers, reports unfortunately I don’t have a lot to report since we have been very slow for the last couple of months; it seems the heat here in the high desert has been keeping members indoors with AC’s running at high speed.  I am happy to tell everyone that our members’ ponds have been without problems this Spring and now Summer; the heat has made for some green water but as long as our UV lights are working in good order we have been able to stay on top of any problems starting to break out.  We have also found that a product by the name Green Clean has “Stopped” the dreaded String Algae bloom we had a problem with two years ago.  It started becoming a problem after a club trip to a water garden nursery where members purchased some very beautiful water lilies and other types of water plants.  At one point it was so bad in my pond my fish could hardly swim from one side to the other; thank goodness now we have the problem under control. We are looking forward to our yearly dinner event August 6th, our Evening Under the Stars dinner.  The Club hosts the dinner and it is our main Summer event. This year it will be South of the Border, with wonderful Mexican food and yes Margaritas; it is the only club function that we have alcohol and a cold Margarita or Cerveza on a warm (OK maybe a hot night) will hit the spot. Anyone can stay up on our events by checking our Face Book page “High Desert Koi Fanciers” I post our newsletters and posts from Koi breeders around the world, so please check it out and give us a Like.   There Will Not be a meeting in August and September is TBA; not sure where that will be, stay tuned. https://www.facebook.com/High-Desert-Koi-Fanciers-518389864904070/?fref=ts

February
Mac McClain, of Inland Koi Society, reporting from sunny California. Our monthly meeting was held on Jan 27, at the home of IKS members Larry and Debby Leverett. We had over 40 members attend. The Leveretts have a 4000 gallon pond with four waterfalls, and it contains 25 koi. It’s a concrete pond with a water proofer added to the concrete. Our board of directors decided to help familiarize our members with different breeds of koi, by having someone at each meeting give a presentation on a different breed. Our first attempt at this endeavor was made by myself. I chose my favorite koi which is the showa. I gave a 15 minute presentation that appeared to be well received by the members. We also installed our new board members with myself as president, Rey Quirong as Vice President, Pete Miles as Newsletter editor, Randy McGarvey, and Tom Wright as Directors.

October
Mike Lane, of High Desert Koi Fanciers, reports the Sep meeting was hosted by Ralph and Norma Wilson. Their pond has grown in nicely since the last time we saw it. Patty Simpson handled the raffle for the day and the club earned $50. Joe Estrada gave a great presentation explaining the different varieties of Koi and their Japanese names. I am sure everyone went home and studied (lol) the different varieties. This is the first time that the club has demonstrated the koi names so many members were eager to learn.   The Oct meeting will be at the home of Dave & Tee Miller and the topic will be: Winterizing your pond, what to do and what treatments to give the pond.  Check out their website at http://www.hdkoifanciers.com

September
Mike and Annette Lane, of High Desert Koi Fanciers, report that the Sep meeting was held at the Quartz Hill home of Ralph and Norma Wilson.  The club’s topic was the identification of koi varieties and names.  Check out their website at http://www.hdkoifanciers.com.

August
Mike Lane, of High Desert Koi Fanciers, reports once again we had a great meeting and raffle. It was very hot but everyone had a shady spot. Thank you to all the people who donated so many great items to the raffle. We discussed quarantining fish before introducing them to our ponds. This is something we all know, but we have become complacent and this spring quite a few of us have paid the price in sick/dead fish. Thank you to the Hoppers for hosting the meeting; we enjoyed seeing your pond and beautiful fish. Karla, Joe and Kristin did the raffle; Joe is one of our founding members and still very involved.  Check out their website at http://www.hdkoifanciers.com.

July
Mike and Annette Lane, of High Desert Koi Fanciers, report the July meeting will be held at the Haggai’s home on July 7th starting at 10 a.m.  There will be a guest speaker talking about succulents and he will also have many odd types for sale. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about growing and keeping succulents.  After the guest speaker there will be a barbecue of typical barbecue food and drinks. The field trip to Tehachapi was truly enjoyed with a garden tour and luncheon at the home of Margaret and Lazilo Veszpeller. Lunch was a wonderful assortment of croissant sandwiches, Asian salad, fruit and drinks. Dessert included small pastries and ice cream balls. After lunch the hostess gave a demonstration on different ways to use decorative pots and plants in the garden, followed by a tour of their garden and pond area. We had a great turnout of 20 people. After lunch many members continued to the nursery down town and quite a few plants came back to the Antelope Valley. Thanks to Tee Miller for putting together a great day!  The 2012 Board of Directors:  President- Karla Haggai; Vice President– Kristin Hopper;  Treasurer- Jack Eccles; Secretary- Dan Whitmore; Activities Director– Tee Miller; Member at Large- David Bodo; Librarian- Terri Eccles; Membership Coordinator-Pat Simpson.  Check out their website at http://www.hdkoifanciers.com

May
Mike Lane, of High Desert KF, reports in May the club held their Pondpalooza 2012; this is the club’s biggest fundraiser for the entire year and was open to anyone interested in koi, pond and water gardening. This year the event had 100 attendees and the day was perfect weather-wise.  Our guest speakers were Don Chandler (who spoke about the importance of AKCA & KOI USA and their role in supporting our club; Don’s humor kept us all listening with all the important information he had to offer) and Michael Hernandez from TOMIGAI (who provided a great lecture regarding koi keeping and giving the audience a shot at trying to judge fish).  Members were very pleased by the information both Don and Michael had to offer.  This was followed by a Mariachi Band, Mexican food buffet lunch and a raffle of over $5,000 in donated items.  What could have been better?

April
Mike Lane, reports the club had their Apr meeting on Mar 31st due to the Easter holiday. It was a windy, chilly day but the troops arrived and we had a great turnout. Karla Haggai gave an update on the Home and Garden Show and all agreed it was worth having the booth. The club signed up 3 old members (Jeannie & Gordon Trom, Mark Gil-bert, & Mark Flores) and 3 new members (David & Becky Stanford, Sheri & Bill Felder and John Meadors). There was much response to our booth with people interested in ponds and also who have ponds and didn’t know there was a club to help them. Many thanks to all that participated and helped. Mike spoke about our Pondpalooza event in May and went over the activities for the day. The club has received approx. $650.00 in donation items and hopefully will receive much more. It is important that RSVP’s are received by 4/15 and the event will be closed to attend after the deadline. Karla continued to discuss plans for the club for this year. A raffle was held and the meeting ended.

March
Mike & Annette Lane, of High Desert Koi Fanciers, report the Mar meeting was to be held at the home of Herb & Natalie Oliver on Ojai Drive in Palmdale; they were looking forward to hearing the guest speaker from Toba Fountains and previewing his wares. The club welcomed old members returning Jeff Corbetts and Chuck & Monique Pumprey as well as new members Steve & Melitta Duncan. All were encouraged to attend the Lancaster Home & Garden Show at the Fairgrounds (Mar 16-18) and reminded of the upcoming Pond Tour on Mar 31st.

February
Mike Lane, of High Desert Koi Fanciers, reports the club recently held their 2012 elections and in Feb. members were invited to meet the new Board while having breakfast at Birdies in Palmdale.  They are planning this year’s events so stay tuned for details or even better – get involved!

January
Mike Lane, of High Desert Koi Fanciers, reports the Dec. Holiday Party and Gift Exchange was a huge success.  With 40 members attending, it was the largest turnout ever!  No meeting was held in Jan. and the location for the Feb. 4th meeting has yet to be determined.  Mike P. will be stepping down after 10 years as President and his shoes will certainly be hard to fill.
