Julie Kimball, of Monterey Bay Koi & Pond Club, reports the club had a booth at the Japanese Cultural Fair in Santa Cruz, as we have done for the last several years—it’s a high light of the event and very much appreciated. Rick Blazo brought some of his koi for sale and for show. Always a great attraction and we had information on the club available for all who are interested. It is a great way to promote Koi and our club AND a very fun event. Check their website at http://www.monterey-bay-koi-and-pond-club.org/Monterey-Bay-Koi-and-Pond-Club/Welcome.html.

Julie Kimball, of Monterey Bay Koi & Pond Club, reports the club enjoyed their second summer pond pot luck social on July 23, at the home of Phil and Tina Castle in Ben Lomond, CA. The Castle’s 5500 gallon liner koi pond was built personally by them in 2004. Over the years they’ve made cosmetic changes and increased filtration (is there ever too much?). They run two pumps with two filtration systems (bead filters and settling tanks) which allows their waterfall line and filtration to run continuously while their skimmer line and pump run one hour on and one hour off to reduce power consumption. This low maintenance pond is the centerpiece of their extensively landscaped home in this redwood forest setting. Their only headache with the pond has been acorns from a now removed large tan oak nearby. Each and every one of those acorns had to be removed by hand from the pond. Lesson learned? Be careful about choice of trees adjacent to ponds! Check their website at http://www.monterey-bay-koi-and-pond-club.org.

Adra Ross, of Monterey Bay Koi & Pond Club, reports on Sat, Sep 12, club members visited the new home and new pond of Julie and Dave Buttigieg. The pond features 15 mature koi, two bottom drains, two Cetuses, two Nexuses, a waterfall, a gas heater, a depth of 7.5 feet, 15,000 gallons, and is 25 feet by 14 feet. Because of unstable ground. cement walls were built with a liner placed inside. The Buttigiegs graciously hosted a question and answer session and served lunch.
