Claude Head, of North East Iowa Koi Association, reports in May they will be attending the Koi Auction held by the Upper Midwest Koi Club to move on some of their babies; they will also be attending the Louisville club’s koi show and will be taking a stunning sanke their grandson purchased from Marudo during his recent trip to Japan with the Koi Acres crew. Brenda Chandler, of Nishiki Koi Club, reports the club held a joint Holiday Buffet Luncheon at the Claim Jumper restaurant in Fountain Valley with the SoCal Koi Club. The food was both delicious and bountiful, the Gift Exchange (featuring numerous steals) and everyone laughing and the champagne just might have heightened the celebratory spirit. The clubs bid farewell to members Gordon and Ally Chibana who moved to TX two days after the Luncheon. They will be missed and since they were the heart, soul and driving force of the Nishiki club, its future is uncertain at this point in time.   Check out their website at http://www.nishikikoiclub.com.

Brenda Chandler, of Nishiki Koi Club, reports the club celebrated the holidays with a Champagne Brunch and Gift Exchange at the Claim Jumper restaurant (in a room decorated with all the Christmas touches – from the lit tree on down) held in conjunction with our sister SoCal Koi Club. The cost was $5 per person (an approximate $25 value) for a full-on buffet that covers the full spectrum, from breakfast through lunch and dinner! Brenda Chandler, of Nishiki Koi Club, reports the club met on Oct 10th at the Aquaponics Farm on Vermont Street in Anaheim where they use rescue koi and tilapia to feed the aquaponics vegetables they raise, 20% of which are donated to the needy. Brenda Chandler, of Nishiki Koi Club, reports the club met at the home of Gordon and Ally Chibana for a Pot Luck lunch; the Chibanas provided hot dogs and chili and the members brought the sides. Jeff Fleischer gave an excellent presentation on building a homemade shower filter using inexpensive parts. Brenda Chandler, of Nishiki Koi Club, reports the club met at Gordon and Ally Chibana’s home. Don Chandler spoke at some length on the history of KHV, the AKCA’s grant programs accomplishments in new testing methodologies, locating where the virus hides while remaining latent and plans for the next generation grant to interrupt the cycle utilizing gene splicing techniques. Brenda Chandler, of Nishiki Koi Club, reports the club held its Oct meeting at the home of Craig and Randee Chambers in Lakewood. We enjoyed viewing (and feeding) their large school of koi, who seemed to enjoy seeing us again. Topics of conversation included the recently concluded Fresno Koi Show, where members won GC, MC, YC, BC and 4 Best in Size awards. Brenda Chandler, of Nishiki Koi Club, reports the club met at the home of Ally and Gordon Chibana in Cypress for a Pot Luck Social. Don Chandler demonstrated pond water testing with drop kits and held a Q & A session on the meaning of the results for pH, KH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Brenda Chandler, of Nishiki Koi Club, reports the club met at the lovely home Dr. Victor and his wife Christina Siew, located in Irvine Cove overlooking the beautiful Pacific Ocean.  New members Max and Rose Cheung were introduced.  Brenda Chandler previewed the all new AKCA/KOIUSA ID Poster to oohs and aahs from members.  It will be debuted at the AKCA Wet Lab later this month and replaces the poster we’ve sold from our AKCA Bookstore for almost 20 years.  A round table discussion was followed by a Pot Luck lunch and raffle before adjourning.

The club met at Caesar and Bettina Yanez’ home in Diamond Bar.   Caesar not only does the Nishiki website, but he does the AKCA and KOI USA websites, too.  After an overview of the operation of their 7,500 gallon koi pond, the club got down to conducting business.  Craig and Randee Chambers were elected club Koi Persons of the year.  Volunteers were solicited to assist Gordon Chibana for the Koi Rescue booth he’ll be running at the Monterrey Park Cherry Blossom Festival on the 26th & 27th.  The May meeting will be at Lisa Barnett’s home.

Brenda Chandler, of Nishiki Koi Club, reports the Mar meeting was held at the home of Craig & Randee Chambers in Lakewood; 13 members attended the second meeting of our recently reactivated club (plus two new members who recently joined).  Russ Madsen volunteered to take charge of having name tags made.  The AKCA ballot was discussed and voted.  Gordon sought volunteers to assist him with the club’s booth at the upcoming Cherry Blossom Festival in Monterrey Park this Apr 26th &27th.   Six members plan to enter koi in the upcoming 40th Annual ZNA SoCal Koi Show.  The Apr meeting will be at Caesar and Bettina’s in Diamond Bar.  Check out their website at http://www.nishikikoiclub.com.

Brenda Chandler, of Nishiki Koi Club, reports after an extended period of being inactive, the Nishiki Koi Club was reactivated on Feb 8.  The meeting was held at the home of Gordon and Ally Chibana and 24 members attended.  After a delicious lunch prepared by Ally and Gordon, elections were the first order of business.  The following slate of officers was elected: Gordon Chibana – President; Craig & Randee Chambers – Vice President; Don Chandler – Secretary; and Sanda Ochs – Treasurer.  Next month’s meeting will be held at the home of Craig & Randee Chambers in Lakewood.  Check out their website at http://www.nishikikoiclub.com.
