September
So Cal Koi Club did not hold a meeting in September. In October, the club will meet at a member’s business where he has devoted one warehouse to a built-in koi pond; approximately 100,000 gallons.

August
So Cal Koi Club held their meeting at a home in Cota de Caza. The pond was designed and built by the owner, Scott Davison. He showed club members a video presentation of the build. His pond is 10,000 gal.

July
So Cal Koi Club did not have a meeting in July as they are now meeting every other month. In August, they will be meeting at a lovely home with a koi pond that is currently on the market.

June
So Cal Koi Club held their June meeting at the home of Mallory Hartt. This was their annual BBQ/auction. This is always a fun event for the club.

May
So Cal Koi Club held their April meeting at the home of Richard Moriarty in Newport Beach. His home is on 3 1/2 acres; 1/4 mile driveway. He has a vineyard there with his wines winning prizes. He also has two large koi ponds of approximately 70,000 gal. There is a stream going from one pond to the other. The property, with all the tropical landscaping, is spectacular. Richard and his wife treated the club to a wine tasting of their various grapes. Next month, the club will have its annual BBQ/auction at the home of Mallory Hartt.

April
So Cal Koi Club held their March meeting at McFadden Intermediate School where the club built a 2,500 gallon koi pond in 1996. It was good seeing Joan & Bob Finnegan able to finally attend one of our meetings after health problems. The club decided to hold meetings every other month, starting in August.

March
So Cal Koi Club did not hold a meeting in March due to two koi shows in the area. In April, the club will visit the pond at McFadden Intermediate School that the club built over 20 years ago. Carole Elliott maintains the pond with a teacher feeding the koi during the school week.

February
So Cal Koi Club held their February meeting at the home of Ed Rambo. The guest speaker was Iva Gaglione, of Star Milling, who gave a very informative talk on koi food. The club will not meet in March due to two local koi shows; they are encouraging members to support both shows.

January 2017
So Cal Koi Club held their January meeting at the Greenhouse of Laguna Koi Ponds where Ben Plonski showed us some of the new koi he received from Japan. Several members purchased some of these beautiful koi. In February, the club will meet at the home of Ed Rambo with guest speaker Iva Gaglione, of Star Milling Co., who will speak about koi food. Also in February, Ben Plonski will again open up his greenhouse and have his top koi separated (just 2 weeks before the Koi Club of San Diego koi show) for purchase; also will have a BBQ.

So Cal Koi Club held their October meeting at the home of Steve & Susie Brasch; the topic was the proper way to catch your koi. At the end of November, the club will have its annual holiday brunch with Chinese gift exchange.

So Cal Koi Club held their September meeting at the home of Fatima Hussain in Palos Verdes. Carole Elliott talked about various koi terminology and showed pictures representing those terms. Club members thoroughly enjoyed the lecture.

August
So Cal Koi Club held their August meeting at the home of Grace Scherrer of Brentwood, CA. Her home is on 4 acres, within viewing of the Getty Museum, and as you drive up her circular driveway, you see a 20,000 galllon pond in front of the house. Mike Hernandez was the guest speaker answering questions from club members. Next month, the club will hold their meeting at the home of Bob & Joan Finnegan.

July
So Cal Koi Club held their July meeting at the home of Paul and Pam Kurz. He has a beautiful 5,000 gallon pond with a lot of beautiful koi. Carole Elliott gave a talk about the recent AKCA wet lab and encouraged all to attend a future wet lab.

June
So Cal Koi Club held their annual June BBQ/potluck/White Elephant auction at the home of Mallory Hartt. This is always a fun event for club members as well as raising funds for the club.

May
So Cal Koi Club did not hold a meeting in May due to the meeting date falling on Mother’s Day. In June, the club will have its annual BBQ/potluck and auction.

April
So Cal Koi Club held their April meeting at the home of Linda Messenger, of Corona del Mar. Carole Elliott spoke about what to look for in Asagi and Shusui. Due to Mother’s Day landing on their meeting day, it was decided to skip the May meeting. In June, the club will have their annual BBQ/Pot Luck and White Elephant auction. This is always fun and a money maker for the club.

March
So Cal Koi Club did not hold a meeting in March due to two local koi shows; encouraged members to attend one or both of the shows. Don & Brenda Chandler entered koi in the Koi Show put on by the San Diego Koi Club and won a number of prizes. Carole Elliott, Don & Brenda Chandler, and Jeff Fleischer have entered koi in the ZNA So Cal Koi Show in Gardena.

February
So Cal Koi Club held their February meeting at the home of Mel & Michelle Peters of Pasadena, CA. They have had their pond for about 1 year; the meeting was spent answering questions from Mel about his “new” pond. In March, there will be no meeting due to two koi shows locally that month.

January 2016
So Cal Koi Club their their annual Holiday Party at the Claim Jumper (Champagne Brunch) along with a Chinese Gift Exchange. In addition, the Nishiki Koi Club will be joining them. Everyone had a great time. It was bittersweet as we had to say goodbye to Ally & Gordon Chibana who moved to Texas two days after the banquet. They will be missed!   Carole Elliott hosted the January meeting with Michael Hernandez as guest speaker. He spoke on what to look for when picking out a show quality koi. This was very informative; club members enjoyed his presentation. In February, the club will meet at a new members home in Pasadena, CA.

November
So Cal Koi Club will be having their annual Holiday Party at the Claim Jumper (Champagne Brunch) along with a Chinese Gift Exchange. This is always fun for the club. In addition, the Nishiki Koi Club will be joining them.

October
SoCal Koi Club held their Oct meeting at the home of Don & Brenda Chandler. Next month they will hold their annual Christmas Party (Nov 29th) at the Claim Jumper, which has a great banquet room with Christmas decorations and music.

September
So Cal Koi Club held their September meeting at the home of Steve & Susie Brasch.   We discussed pond maintenance, especially during the hot summer months. Next month we will have guest speaker Mike Hernandez.

August
So Cal Koi Club held their August meeting at the Rainforest Flora, a place that sells exotic and unique plants that don’t need soil. They also have a large koi pond with a great waterfall. They also discussed ideas for upcoming meetings, Many club members went home with some beautiful plants. One of the owners also discussed his “nursery.” It was very informative. Next month they will be meeting at the home of Steve & Susie Brasch in Long Beach.

July
So Cal Koi Club held their July meeting at Andrew’s Koi International. Andy spoke about judging kohaku. It was a very informative meeting that all enjoyed. Andy also discussed koi food and the types to purchase during various times of the year.

June
So Cal Koi Club held their annual potluck/White Elephant auction at the home of Mallory Hartt in June. For July, they will be meeting at Andrew’s Koi International. Andrew Moo will speak on what to look for when purchasing utsuri.

May
So Cal Koi Club met at member Ed Rambo’s home in April; Carole Elliott spoke re: predators and ways to keep them away from your koi. In May, the club will be meeting at the home of Narendra and Anita Gupta with guest speaker, Iva Gaglione, of Star Milling Co. She will talk about koi food. The club will be having their annual BBQ/potluck/auction in June at the home of Mallory Hartt. This is always a fun event with great views of the Pacific Ocean from Mallory’s backyard.

April
N So Cal Koi Club did not have a meeting in March or April; the club encouraged members to attend the Koi Club of SanDiego’s Koi Show as well as the ZNA So Cal Koi Show in Gardenia. The club alsoencouraged members to attend the annual Hanamatsuri Festival in April. Bob & Joanstarted a koi display about 40 years ago there to build up membership for the club aswell as the Orange County ZNA Koi Club.

 

March
So Cal Koi Club did not have a meeting in March; the club encouraged members to attend the Koi Club of San Diego’s Koi Show as well as the ZNA So Cal Koi Show in Gardena. Don & Brenda Chandler took koi to the San Diego Koi Show and got two Best in Class and 4 1st Place Awards.

Carole Elliott also took koi and received 3 Friendship Awards, 1 Best in Size and 4 1st Place Awards. Next month the club is encouraging members to attend the Hanamatsuri Festival in Garden Grove where there will be a koi display.

 

February
So Cal Koi Club held their February meeting at the home of Bob & Carol Karlin, of Santa Monica. They have an impressive 3 story home on two lots with an elevator and impressive kitchen with a rounded brick ceiling in a herringbone design and 30’ high. Elections were held with Dr. Tom Gates the new President and Bob Finnegan VP. The club is in the process of working on a new web page that Cesar Yanez designed and Carole Elliott will maintain. The guest speaker was Eric Castillo who spoke about heating one’s home/pond with solar power. It was a very informative talk. The club won’t meet in March due to two local koi shows. The club voted on Koi Person of the Year – Congratulations to Mallory Hartt.

January 2015
So Cal Koi Club held their January meeting at the home of Tom Holder. He gave a very informative talk on basic koi health with emphasis upon not using salt in one’s pond. Next month the club will meet at the home of Carol Karlin in Santa Monica. Their guest speaker will be Eric Castillo who will talk about the benefits of solar heating around your home and pond. The club won’t have a meeting in March as they want to support two local koi shows that month (San Diego & Gardena).

November
So Cal Koi Club is preparing for their upcoming holiday party in conjunction with Nishiki Koi Club at the Claim Jumper. For January, they will be meeting at the home of Tom Holder who will talk about basic koi

health. If no one knows Marcella Schaeffer, she was the club’s Honorary Member. She

and her husband, George, had koi ponds in Murrietta, CA. She had been hospitalized

after breaking her arm – then had her hip implant replaced. After that, it was downhill.

We will all miss her and her wonderful smile. She is an Angel in Heaven.

October
So Cal Koi Club had a great meeting

In September at Inland Koi where they held a koi judging contest for club members. InOctober, club members met at a fairly new koi facility in Placentia, CA (SeasideAquatics). The owner, Tom Tran, gave a talk on how he got started in the koi business. Nov. 30th the club will be having their Annual Holiday party along with the Nishiki Koi Club. They will also have their Chinese Gift Exchange which is always fun! Because of Nov. 30th Holiday party, there won’t be a December meeting.

 

September
So Cal Koi Club is getting reservations for the annual Holiday party to be held with Nishiki Koi Club on Nov. 30th at the Claim Jumper. The Sept. meeting was held at Inland Koi in Fountain Valley. They had many large koi displays. The koi looked great and very healthy with lots of different sizes and many show quality koi. They also have some beautiful patio and casual teak furniture. They were very hospitable with lots of cold drinks and wonderful Krispy Kreme donuts.

 

August
So Cal Koi Club held their August meeting at the home of Andrew Nguyen, a landscape architect.  This was a wonderful meeting; beautiful koi pond with large koi, especially a Tancho.  The pond is lined around with black bamboo.  His front yard is just as interesting to walk through.  He designed his pond system as well as all the incredible landscaping, including a greenhouse full of a large variety of orchids.  In September the club will meet at the new facility of Inland Koi and hear from the owner.  The topic will be “How to pick a quality koi.”  The Holiday get together will be held along with the Nishiki Koi Club at the Claim Jumper Restaurant in Fountain Valley; we will have a gift exchange as well.

July
So Cal Koi Club held their July meeting at Steve & Susie Brasch’s home in Long Beach.  Guest speaker was Nader Bedokhti, who spoke on his Toba Magic Fountain; it sits in the pond with an anchor; 10 different spray heads with three used at a time.  It also has 4 selectable light colors; 8 other colors may be used.  The unit is turned on and off remotely and spray adjustments also done remotely.   In August, the club will meet at landscaper Andrew Nguyen who will talk about his pond build and plants around his pond.  The club is having name badges made up again using the same company.  In September, they will meet at the new facilities of Inland Koi in Fountain Valley to see their koi.

June
So Cal Koi Club had their annual BBQ/potluck/auction at Mallory Hartt’s in June.  The food was good and plentiful; great auction items with stealer prices – as usual, everyone had a great time.  Next month the club will meet at President Steve & Susie Brasch’s home in Long Beach.

April
So Cal Koi Club did not meet in March due to 2 koi shows that month.  In April, they will be meeting at member Ed Rambo’s home; the topic will be “How to Protect Your Koi from Predators.”  Ed has an interesting pond that was built on each side of his back door steps and has been joined to run under his steps for the larger koi.

March
So Cal Koi Club’s  last meeting was held at the home of Don & Brenda Chandler where Don discussed proper netting of your koi.  In March, the club did not have a meeting due so that members could attend the Koi Club of San Diego’s koi show and SoCal ZNA’s koi show in Gardena.  There were just under 300 koi at the Gardena show with lots of large koi.  ZNA holds their koi judging seminar which was well attended.  Next month, their meeting will be held at the home of Ed Rambo with the topic “How to Protect Your Koi from Predators.”

February
So Cal Koi Club held their February meeting at the home of Don & Brenda Chandler.  Excellent turn  out of members; election of new officers and Koi Person of the Year is Jeff Amos.  The Chandlers served club members a lot of great food.  Don gave a great talk on how to properly catch and pan your koi.  There won’t be a meeting in March as there are two koi shows.  The club has encouraged members to attend.

January 2014
So Cal Koi Club held their annual Xmas party in Dec at the Claim Jumper in their private banquet room.  Great buffet lunch and always a fun Chinese gift exchange with a number of items stolen.  Their Jan meeting will be held at Laguna Koi Ponds’ warehouse.  Ben Plonski, owner, will talk about their latest venture and show club members newly purchased koi from Japan.

November
So Cal Koi Club held their November as a joint meeting the the Koi Club of San Diego at California Koi Farms.  Takemi was the guest speaker.  It was a potluck with some great dishes; all I think ate too much as there was so much great food.  Those in attendance also got to see koi with some purchasing fish.  Next month the club will have their annual Christmas Brunch at Claim Jumper’s along with the always fun gift exchange.

October
SoCal Koi Club held their October meeting at the home of new member, Grace Scherrer, in Brentwood, CA. Barbara Johnson, “The Koi Lady,” was guest speaker and spoke on maintaining your koi pond. The meeting was well attended and those present thought it was one of the best meetings of the year. Next month they will have a joint meeting with the Koi Club of San Diego at California Koi Farms with a potluck and a chance to see the new koi.

September
So Cal Koi Club held their Sep meeting at the home of Dr. Tom Gates where he talked about his hold filtration system and his new system. Next month the club will meet at the home of Grace Scherrer in Brentwood with guest speaker Barbara Johnson, The Koi Lady, who will talk about pond maintenance.

August
So Cal Koi Club held their August meeting at the home of Jeff Amos and Todd Brooks in Laguna Beach. Carole Elliott purchased 3 tosai kohaku from Laguna Koi Pond so that members could judge the three. Once everyone viewed the koi and voted for their favorite, Bob Finnegan talked about which koi he felt was the best and why – as well as the other two. Next month, the club will be meeting at the home of Dr. Tom Gates of Palos Verdes Estates, who will talk about filtration.

July
So Cal Koi Club held their July meeting at the home of Pam & Paul Kurz in Fountain Valley. Don Chandler & Carole Elliott talked about what happens to your koi when the power goes out. They talked about work arounds as well as information on various types of generators one could purchase to avoid having the koi go without air and filtration for any length of time. Next month, the club will be meeting at their treasurer’s home in Laguna Beach. The club will purchase 3 Gin Rin koi that members will rate either 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place. We will then talk about which koi is the best and why. Joan has been ill (will be having lumbar surgery this week) and was unable to make her other contact calls.

June
So Cal Koi Club reports their June meeting was the annual BBQ-Potluck and White Elephant auction at the home of Mallory Hartt in San Pedro. This is always very well attended and fun as well as being a fundraiser for the club.

May
So Cal Koi Club had a great April meeting and will have a field trip May 19th at Tippi Hedren’s Shambala Preserve to see the lions, tigers, etc. along with the koi that Carole has brought them from rescues. This is a magical place where you feel you’re in a different world. Carole will provide a picnic for members attending. In June, the club will have their annual BBQ/White Elephant Auction which is always fun.

April
Joan reports that So Cal Koi Club will be holding their April meeting at new members Narendra & Anita Gupta of Corona del Mar. In May, the club will have an outing at Tippi’s Hedren’s Wildlife Preserve. The club has helped out with their koi pond in the past as well as taking rescue koi there for a home. On Saturday, April 13th, the club had a koi display at the Hanamatsuri Festival in Anaheim. We have done this the past 35 years; great exhibits of Japanese culture and excellent food.

March
Joan reports that So Cal Koi Club held their Mar meeting at member Mark Dickson who has an indoor 40,000 gallon pond at his business. The club not only was treated to seeing some beautiful large koi but also Mark’s varied wild game mounts from hunts he has been on. He also treated the club to a catered lunch by a local BBQ establishment. In Apr, we hope to have a representative from Novaris to speak to the club. In May, the club is planning a field trip to Tippi Hedren’s wildlife preserve, where the club has helped out with the koi pond in the past.

February

Joan reports that So Cal Koi Club won’t have a regular meeting in Feb.  They are encouraging members to attend the Koi Club of San Diego’s Koi Show in Feb, either bringing koi to show or just attending.  In Mar, club members will be treated to seeing a 40,000 gal. pond at Mark Dickson’s business (it’s an indoor pond).  Mark will also provide members with a catered lunch.  All of his koi are show quality and at least 24”.

January 2013
So Cal Koi Club held their Christmas Party at Gordon Chibana’s home with very good attendance, great food, and fun Chinese Gift Exchange.  The January meeting was held in Long Beach at the home of Julie Stoll.  The topic was winterizing your pond.  The club is growing and getting new members each month.

November
Joan, of So Cal Koi Club, reports their Dec Christmas Party will be held on Dec 9th at Gordon & Ally Chibana’s home.  There will be a Gift Exchange along with great food & Holiday Spirit.

October
Joan reports that the SoCal Koi Club had a joint meeting with the Koi Club of San Diego in October.  It was well attended and had guest speaker, KHATom Ross, who gave a great presentation on quarantining your koi.  In November, club members are encouraged to go to the Huntington Library Japanese Garden.  The last time the club went there the Japanese Garden portion was closed due to remodeling.

September
Joan reports that the SoCal Koi Club held their September meeting at Don & Brenda Chandler’s home.  Every month the club is getting 1 to 2 new members.  The guest speaker was Dr. Rob Hildreth, DVM, who spoke on KHV and the new vaccine (Cavoy) from Novartis.  Brenda went all out with great food and everyone had a great time!  Joseph Boyer, a professional photographer who just closed down an exhibit in Laguna Beach, attended and displayed his beautiful koi pictures.  In October, club members will be traveling south to San Diego to join the Koi Club of San Diego at their meeting.  In November, club members will go to the Huntington Library in Arcadia to tour the newly revamped 100+ year old Japanese Gardens.

August
Joan reports that the SoCal Koi Club held a joint koi meeting with the Nishiki Koi Club where the guest speaker was Chris Clemens from Operation Rebound Organization.  The club donated $500 to the organization that assists vets after rehab and sends some to the Paralympics.  Chris will be going to London to participate in the Paralympics.  Bob & Joan Finnegan attended the PNKCA convention and saw many old and new koi friends.

July
Joan reports that the SoCal Koi Club held a joint koi auction with the Nishiki Koi Club on June 17th.  There wee lots of koi to auction with profits split among the two clubs.  They did not have a meeting in July but will be meeting in August at the home of Gordon & Ally Chibana.  They got 5 new members in the last 2 months because of brochures put at the local dealers.

June
Joan reports that the SoCal Koi Club held their Annual June BBQ/Potluck/White Elephant Auction at the home of Mallory Hartt in San Pedro.  It was another successful/fun event for club members.  Included in the White Elephant Auction were 4 beautiful koi donated by Ben Plonski and a $75 gift certificate from Asahi Fancy Koi.  The club got 4 new members in the last 1 ½ months from the brochures that Carole Elliott puts out at dealers.

May
Joan reports that the SoCal KC held their May meeting at McFadden Intermediate School where the club built a pond in an indoor atrium over 20 years ago.  The club (mainly Carole Elliott) has been maintaining the pond ever since.  Most club members had not seen the pond as they weren’t members when the pond was built – they were impressed.  In June, the club will be having its annual BBQ/Potluck/White Elephant auction.  This is always a fun time for members!  They also had a successful exhibit at the OC Buddhist Temple and at the Cherry Blossom Festival in Monterey Park.  The club will also participate in a joint koi auction with the Nishiki Koi Club at Andrew’s International Koi in Anaheim on June 17th (Yes, Father’s Day).

April
Joan reports that the SoCal Koi Club had no regular meeting in April.  Instead, the club manned booths at the Hanamatsuri Festival in Anaheim the weekend of April 14-15 and will man a booth at the Cherry Blossom Festival in Monterey Park the weekend of April 21-21.  Next month the club will be meeting at McFadden Intermediate School where the club built a koi pond over 20 years ago.  This will be the first time to see the pond for many of our club’s members.

Joan reports that the SoCal Koi Club held their March meeting at Andrew’s Koi International where Andy talked about purchasing young koi and the maintenance and growth of the koi. They also voted on the AKCA By-Laws, Officers, and elected their officers (the same as last year). The club also voted Bob & Joan Finnegan as Koi Persons of the Year. Next month the club will man two booths: One at the annual Hanamatsuri Festival in Anaheim at the Orange County Buddhist Church and another in Montebello at the Cherry Blossom Festival. It was also decided to hold a joint auction with the Nishiki club in June. Last month, several members took koi to the San Diego Koi Show and did really well, coming home with 44 awards. A number of other members also attended.

February
Joan reports that the SoCal Koi Club will not have a meeting in February; they are encouraging members to enter koi or attend the Koi Club of San Diego’s koi show at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.  On March 11th the club will meet at Andrew’s International Koi and see Andrew’s newly arrived koi.  Andrew will talk about purchasing koi.  On April 15-16th the club will man a booth at the annual Hanamatsuri Festival at the Orange County Buddhist Church; lots of displays, good food, wonderful produce and plants, etc.  In January, we had a great meeting and refreshments at the Long Beach home of Steve & Susie Brasch.

Joan reports that the SoCal Koi Club had their January meeting at the home of Steve & Susie Brasch of Long Beach.  There won’t be a February meeting as the club is encouraging members to enter fish in the San Diego Koi Show or at least attend.
