Don Chamberlain, of ZNA NorCal, reports the club held their 10th Annual Koi Show April 1 & 2. This year it was billed as a National Show as exhibitors and visitors from many states attended the show this year. With great weather and great koi, it was an extremely enjoyable event. Several vendors came from far away to participate and meet new customers in California. A large crowd of visitors created a very vibrant scene Saturday and Sunday. To see photos of the show visit our webpage: http://znanorcal.info and click Latest News or visit us on Facebook. Check their website at https://www.facebook.com/…/ZNA-NorCal-Koi-Club/114370775244634

Don Chamberlain, of ZNA NorCal, reports work continues on the 2017 koi show. Regional Coordinators have been identified across the country to help distant entrants and supporters. The Entry and Supporter Packets have been prepared and are currently under review. We expect to begin distributing these to potential exhibitors and supporters at the beginning of September. This past Saturday we held our August event at Genki Koi in San Jose. Dr. Jessie Sanders gave a presentation on surgical removal of ulcers. She has performed a number of these procedures now with good results and her new hospital offers all of the facilities you would ever need for the care of koi and other fish. Unfortunately attendance was very small, but the group that attended enjoyed a great presentation. We hope to get it on Facebook with a link from our website, znanorcal.info very soon. May
Don Chamberlain, of ZNA NorCal, reports The ZNA NorCal Koi Show at the beginning of April was a big success. We had another crop of outstanding koi in competition. All of the koi clubs in the area (Monterey Bay, Santa Clara Valley, SF Bay and Camellia Koi Club) provided volunteers that performed essential duties. This cooperation did much to ensure the success of the show. We had visitors from New Jersey, Minnesota, Illinois, Hawaii, Colorado, Texas and Washington. A group of young koi breeders from Japan came with some of their young koi adding another dimension to the show. Planning has started for next year’s show. We hope to use what we learned to make the next show even better. At the end of May our President, David Tran hosted a celebration/appreciation party for all enthusiasts in the area. We had between 35-40 attendees in attendance enjoying BBQ and friendship with fellow koi keepers. In May we are seeking volunteers for a new slate of officers. A Young Koi Show is scheduled for June 5th. More details are available at our website, http://znanorcal.info along with photos of all of the recent show winners and a photo tour of the show. https://www.facebook.com/…/ZNANorCalKoiClub/114370775244634.

Dinh Nguyen, of ZNA NorCal, reports our Koi Show is coming up very soon, April 2 & 3. We hope to see you there. The competition is expected to be very good again this year. We’ve received great support from the Monterey Bay Koi and Pond Club, the SF Bay Koi Club, Santa Clara Valley Koi and Water Garden Club, the Camellia Koi Club and the Shasta Koi Club. We’re exhibiting 30 tanks this year with entrants from all over the US and beyond. Judges will include Misaji Yamazaki and Hong Man Leung. February
Don Chamberlain, of ZNA NorCal, reports we did not hold any events in January and we have nothing planned for February either. Work proceeds to prepare for our Koi Show, April 2 & 3. This year we have involved members from all of our nearby clubs to help with the event. These include the Monterey Bay Koi and Pond Club, the Santa Clara Koi and Water Garden Club, The SF Bay Area Koi Club and even have participation from the Camellia Koi Club (Sacramento area). We expect this will increase attendance and should make for a very enjoyable event. We plan a meeting March 5th in preparation for the event. We’re hoping for a good turnout from our members to help make the show a success. Check their website at https://www.facebook.com/…/ZNANorCalKoiClub/114370775244634. Jeff Fleischer, of ZNA So Cal, reports the club’s 42nd Annual Koi Show is coming up on March 19th & 20th at the Gardena Civic Center and the club’s Feb meeting was spent with final show planning. Hope to see you there. Should be a corker!

January 2016
Dinh Nguyen, of ZNA NorCal, reports we held a Holiday Event near the end of November. It was a great success. The weather was great and we had a great turn out. We invited everyone we could contact and had lots of non ZNA NorCal members attend. Many were very new to the hobby and were blown away by the champion quality koi in David Tran’s 16,000 gallon pond. Especially since he pulled a number out of the pond for measurement so it was possible to get a good close up view of many over 30″ koi of very high quality. A video of the event is available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3RnBiXo4aA. Preparation is under way for the 2016 ZNA NorCal Koi Show scheduled for April 2-3 in San Jose. We’ve got a large number of exhibitors already signed up coming from Texas, Minnesota, Washington and Canada as well as California. We’re very excited about the show and currently working to finalize arrangements with sponsors and vendors. More information is available at our website, http://znanorcal.info. We’re also asking anyone interested in koi related information to sign up for our mailing list at the site. Check their website at https://www.facebook.com/…/ZNA-NorCal-Koi-Club/114370775244634

However, in November we have a big event planned. On 11/29 the club will be hosting a year end celebration at our President David Tran’s pond located in Morgan Hill, CA.  David will be pulling all of his champion koi out of the pond for their annual measurement and checkup. Lunch will be served. All koi enthusiasts are invited, members or not, so this will be a great way to close out the year with a fun day and meet old friends and new. September
Don Chamberlain, of ZNA NorCal, reports on Sunday, 8/16 we held the first of three Koi Handling events at David Trans pond. Rick Blazo displayed the proper way to net and move koi by hand. We had a great turnout and BBQ. A number of hobbyists took the opportunity to capture and move a koi from a bowl to a nearby tank. On August 29th the second seminar was held at Champion Koi in San Jose. Owner Tom Lai demonstrated a number of benching skills. Removing koi from bags, netting and bowling them in a tank, measuring and re-bagging. Again, we had a pretty good turnout. The presentation was very informative. The final seminar is scheduled for Saturday, 9/19. This event will be held at Genki Koi in San Jose. Rick and Tom will review their presentations. Kevin Pham will then go into more detail on measuring and classifying koi for a show. Finally Duke Nguyen, a well known and experienced hobbyist will present the hobbyists’ viewpoint. To attract as many people as possible, Kevin is sponsoring a free raffle for an extremely nice showa that will go to one of the koi club members that arrive between 10 & 11. Only members of any koi club are eligible. The seminar will begin at 11. For more details, check out znanorcal.info or Facebook/znanorcal. Competition was divided into 4 classes: Class 1: 10”; Class 2: 10-14”,; Class 3: 14-18”; and Class 4: 18-22”. April
Dinh Nguyen, of ZNA NorCal Chapter, reports our 7th annual show was a huge success with plenty of foot traffic. GC was a large and worthy kohaku owned by Long Vo and purchased from Andrews Koi International in Anaheim, CA. The show was held at the Matrix 8 casino in San Jose.  The banquet MC was Larry Gill (who was also the Show Chair). Larry asked for a moment of silence for fellow long time judge Chuck Poppe who recently passed away; he will be missed by many. Larry had planned to see Bob & Joan Finnegan at the show & banquet but that was not to be this year. Larry had in mind to honor the many years of service to the hobby the Finnegan’s have given of themselves.  Many thanks to all the vendors, members and fellow koi keepers that shared their koi with us and the public. See you all next year.

February
Don Chamberlain, of ZNA NorCal, said the February meeting was held Saturday, 2/8 at Champion Koi; there were 7 attendees.  Larry Gill was unable to attend as he is in Japan taking the test for Assistant Judge.  They heard he passed his test, so congratulations to Larry!  They spent some time looking at some of Tom’s new koi.  The rest of the meeting was spent discussing the upcoming koi show.  Garry reported on the progress with sponsors and vendors.  We currently have 10 sponsors confirmed and 9 vendors.  We need many more.  Garry will be visiting the San Diego show and other events in SoCal.  Hopefully he can attract some more sponsors and vendors then.

January 2014
Din Nguyen, of NorCal ZNA, reports that their Dec meeting was held Sat, 12/14, at Regan Koi.  Thanks to Son and his family for hosting the meeting.  They enjoyed a short judging exercise, comparing a pair of Son’s tosai; lots of food to share and a great time was had by all.  They discussed the need to concentrate on PR over the next few short months they have left before the koi show on Apr 12-13; the new venue will be bigger and better than ever.  Dinh announced that Louie Hernandez will be promoting the show in SoCal. Nick Holquin has volunteered to promote it to the Spanish speaking audience.  A publisher for the show booklet has been found.  All the sponsors will be advertised, but they also hope to sell as many other ads as possible to help cover the costs of publication.  They’ll display a business card size ad for $25.  Rates have been set for larger ads.  Please contact Garry Chin, the Sponsor/Vendor Coordinator as well as the club VP, for details.  They’ll accept whatever they feel it’s worth.  If you’re on Facebook, twitter or koi forums please promote the show whenever you get a chance.

September
Larry Gill, of ZNA NorCal, said the club held its monthly meeting at Victor Tran’s residence; he provided great food and drink to those present. The San Jose Airport Garden Hotel priced the club out of the market; there is no way the club could afford to have the show there. Dinh took it upon himself and met with the M8atric Casino which is located across the street from last year’s show site. They voted to hold the show at the casino’s parking lot as the price was affordable. The contract will be signed next week. The hotel the club will use is right across the street from the casino. Garry Chin will be the vendor coordinator assisted by Dinh Nguyen. Dinh will also be the judge coordinator. The club will not invite international judges due to the late date but will invite US ZNA judges. Sanh Huynh, the club’s treasurer, has volunteered to be the new show chair. The new show date will be April 12-13, 2014. The club’s next election for officers is February of 2014 and openings for members to fill the positions of President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary and member at large. Victor Tran will look into whether he can be the new web master; also looked for a member to write an article for KOI USA.

August
Larry Gill, of ZNA Norcal, said their meeting was held at Ronald Yee’s. Ron is a retired dentist who is also a chef; his menu for the meeting was Southern cuisine & his Jambalaya was delicious. In the absence of the Acting president and VP, Sanh Huynh conducted the meeting. It was voted on and approved to hold the show at the same location a week after Easter which means the show date will again be held in April. Once the hotel date is secured the club will move forward to start advertising the show and get the judges. If the show was moved back to November the board feels that it cause confusion and have no continuity. The show in April will allow for the club to grow. The meeting concluded after Larry asked those present to select the best koi in the pond. Larry disagreed with the koi the members selected and explained why. The next club meeting will be held at Victor Tran’s residence on Sept. 14th.
