Judy Walker, of ZNA SoCal, reports our July meeting at Jeff Fleischer’s new house was really fun. Jeff definitely compensated for not having any koi to look at by providing a BBQ lunch that was worthy of being on the Food Network. To Jeff and his ‘kitchen staff’ (Dan, Richard, Murray, Nori and Chai) thank you so much for a wonderful picnic. But the meeting wasn’t all eating. We had a chance to do somewhat of a modified swim-around to share ideas on considerations when designing a pond. Jeff has the luxury of designing his new pond from scratch, and as we all expected he has his design pretty much finished. There were some interesting points, or maybe I’ll call them adjustments, on what we all may have heard for so long about pond design. Check their website at http://znasocal.org.

July
Jeff Fleischer, of ZNA SoCal, reports the June 28th meeting was held at the CDM Community Youth Center in Corona Del Mar. Training topic was Ancestry.com for Koi. LOL. The July meeting will be held at Jeff’s newly purchased home in the Valley where members can help him plan where his ponds will go. Check their website at http://znasocal.org.

Louie reports ZNA So-Cal relaxed last month at the pond built with the help of their club at the Keiro Retirement Home in LA. They talked about what topics would be helpful to their members. Their main goal is to bring together their members and provide a forum where they all can learn from each other. They have lots of members, with varying levels of experience and different reasons for being koi keepers. The reason that they’re part of this club is to learn from each other. Last year, they were looking at the husbandry aspects of koi keeping. This year their goal is to shift discussions more towards their actual finny friends, their koi.

Jeff Fleischer, of ZNA SoCal, reports that the club held its 41st Annual Koi Show at the Gardena Civic Center on Mar 21 & 22. This year it was under sunny skies! There were 40 tanks and over 200 koi entered. Show Chair was Alan Stein while Judy Walker handled all the administrative and vendor issues. The 8 ZNA Judges, under the leadership of Chai T. and Larry Christensen, worked together seamlessly and their efforts were truly appreciated. Jeff Larson, from the Chicago area, won the GC award with a beautiful 85 cm Taniguchi Kohaku. The banquet at the Holiday Inn was a festive event filled with good humor and high spirits after a long, fun filled and sun kissed day. Check out their website at http://znasocal.org

Louie Hernandez, ZNA SoCal Chapter, reported our Aug meeting was in Fountain Valley at the new location for Inland Koi . The topic was koi buying in Japan. Chai T gave a great talk on the best times to go to Japan depending on what size koi you are looking for. We learned about dealers that take hobbyists and what to expect.. Owners of Inland Koi (Peter & Joe) talked about their move and the reasons for moving. In Orange & Los Angeles counties we now have at least 9 great koi dealers within 45 minutes of Anaheim, CA. Our show poster is ready to go to the printer so look for us in Facebook with more details to come about our show in March 2015.

September
As always I’m starting with a THANK YOU to our meeting hosts for Aug, Pam and Doug Wright. If you have never made it to a meeting at Doug’s house you really have missed out. We had members gathered around Doug’s pond admiring his fish and great water clarity. Then from the pond it was a saunter over to the Plumeria growing beds…….about the size of a single car garage floor. It really was hard to get folks out of there because the fragrance was intoxicating. But once you broke free and made it to the patio you were delighted by Doug cooking us hamburgers on his new grill! All this and we hadn’t even begun or discussion on plants and ponds. That discussion did get underway and for those of you who weren’t with us if you’ve been wondering what the heck we meant by plants and ponds our discussion revolved around the role plants serve in the Nitrogen cycle in our ponds. In a natural setting it is the plant material that completes the cycle by taking up the nitrates and using those in the production of protein food (plant material). So when we have ponds that are devoid of plants the potential for build-up of nitrates is high. Nitrates + phosphorus (which is in the pellets we feed) is the ‘perfect storm’ for algae growth. That being said we looked at the ways by which we can remove nitrates from our ponds both mechanically and biologically. We talked about how plants can be used in our systems, types of filters that specifically support bacteria that love to gobble up nitrates, and of course our multi-purpose maintenance activity of water changes. It was a good meeting and while the information itself wasn’t brand spanking new, it is one of those things that you don’t consciously think about, and it was good to see heads nodding in agreement, or favorite ‘tricks’ being shared, as we talked about an important component of providing a healthy environment for our jewels.

August
Louie, of ZNA So Cal Chapter reports August meeting will be held at the home of Doug & Pam Wright. Doug was their choice for “Koi Person of the Year” and as always he offered his home for their monthly meeting. Besides having a great looking pond he is a member of a Plumeria club. He will be giving members starts. Save the month of March for their 40th Annual Koi Show in Gardena, CA.

July
Louie, of ZNA So Cal Chapter, reports that their June meeting was held at the home of Chris Martin. Chris has created the most Magnificent Japanese hillside with a very long waterfall that empties into his pond. Although Chris is new to the hobby his design of the pond is well done and the koi are happy. Thanks to Chai & Nori for sharing their knowledge on fish growth to their club. This year is the 2nd year in a row that Nori has won GC at Andrews Koi International’s Grow Out Contest. He raises his koi in only 300 gallons of water.

ZNA So.Ca Chapter’s April meeting was held at the home of Pam Spindola. Pam is a respected koi judge and an avid hobbyist. Her back yard looks like a tropical setting with great koi ponds. Their speaker was Tom Holder, the President of “Koi Kennel Care;” his talk was about prevention and health. Tom always has a great program and products. Doug Wright was selected as the club’s Koi Person of the Year.

April
Louie, of ZNA So Cal, said their show in March started and ended with beautiful weather. There were over 200 koi entered with lots of big fish over 26” (30 entered). The quality was excellent in all sizes. GC was a showa owned by Ann Le, her first time entering a koi show. This showa is 34” and a fine one it is. They feel that their 40th show will be one to remember in 2014. Thanks to all the members that helped and the team of David & Debby Young from Arizona for their help on the computer. Friendship goes a long way and we thank all for their support.

March
So Cal ZNA will have their 39th Koi Show the weekend of Mar 16-17th. David & Debbie Young will be handling the computer. Prep is all in place, members have their jobs posted along with team leaders to report to. Almanac calls for fair weather. They are looking forward to another successful show.
