Gary Elmore, of Atlanta KC, said they just had a planning meeting for all the years’ major events. The annual club Auction is 1st on April 22nd and is one of their biggest fundraisers for the year. Then, the pond tour comes shortly after on May 6th and it generally draws 3-400 visitors. Last, but not least, will be the 27th Annual Koi Show on Sept. 29-30 on Oct. 1st. Last year they had right at 40 tanks with over 240 fish. Volunteers now have a game plan for the year and everyone is on the same page.

Gary Elmore, of Atlanta KC, said they just came off the biggest show that the Atlanta club has ever had. They had 46 tanks with 220 fish. There were 27 over size 6 and the competition in all sizes was intense. They had to recruit 2 more judges that were at the show to help out. Lucky for them they were there already. Show went off with no major problems and everyone got to see some amazing fish. Show was well attended and vendors did well.

Gary Elmore, of Atlanta KC, said their club is in the final stages of show preparation for the 21st annual Koi Show. It will be held Oct. 7-9 at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds. This is their second year there and the first one was a winner. Inside, in a venue created for shows, they had plenty of room for growth and it looks like this year they will need some of it. They have already started receiving reservations and commitments from many both local and from out of town. Last year they had 144 fish in the show and he expects that number to be closer to 200 this year. They ran out of tanks last year and have come up with another 25 for this show. He hopes they run out again. Richard Porter will be Head Judge and his assistant Judge will be Troy Head. Goldfish Judge will be Luanne Porter. More info can be had on their website www.atlantakoiclub.org.

Gary Elmore, of Atlanta KC, said they had a record auction in April. They auctioned around 450 koi to 84 different bidders and brought in over 20k in one day. Some of that went to the owners of the fish and a healthy percentage went to the club treasury. Their biggest money maker of the year and a great time for everyone. They are planning for the 21st annual show; well under way (actually almost done with the planning). They had 144 fish last year and plan to top that this year. They are in a new venue – Gwinnett Fair Grounds and the building there is designed to be an exhibit hall with all the amenities you could want. It is also large enough to handle another 50 show tanks if they run into that situation. Dates are Oct. 7-9. They are adding a size 7 as they had 17 size 6’s last year. Vendor and exhibitor packets will be on their website shortly if not already.

February
Gary Elmore, of Atlanta KC, said they just came off of a very successful fall show. They moved the venue to the local fairgrounds; it worked well. They had 144 fish in 37 tanks and would have had more if they had more tanks. David & Karen Hardcastle won with a magnificent Kohaku. They are now preparing for the Annual Spring Auction, their biggest money maker of the year. If it is like previous years, they will have around 80-90 bidders and 300 fish to auction. This will be April 16th. They are also planning a pond tour a couple of months after the auction. Elections were held and Jerry Johnson moved from property manager to VP. Ron Scott was re-elected to treasurer and Gary Elmore became the interim property manager.

Gary Elmore, of Atlanta KC, said they are having their 21st annual koi show on Oct. 9th. All of the exhibitor tanks are rented (about 35) so they are looking forward to a good show. Corporate sponsor is the Koi Store out of Watkinsville, Ga. There will be a good number of wet and dry vendors and they have moved to the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds; it’s inside and air conditioned. Head Judge is Troy Head and Dale Gingrich as Assistant Judge. Goldfish Judge is David Hardcastle. Last month they visited a new koi dealer, Grand Koi, located right outside of Atlanta. He has a great new facility and they are looking forward to working with them in the future. November will be the elections and their fall social. They rest in December and start all over again.

Gary Elmore, of Atlanta KC, said their semi-annual pond tour went well last month. As part of their package deal, any ticket buyer for the pond tour becomes a member for the remainder of the year. Not everyone will renew come January but many have with past tours. Summer social to be held in two weeks. Instead of a Sunday afternoon business meeting they have a Saturday night “social.” Show dates have been changed from the first week of September to the second weekend in October. They have moved the show to the local county fairgrounds in an attempt to draw more people. It will be inside, air conditioned which is something they have not had in the past. Details are on their website at: www.atlantakoiclub.org.

Gary Elmore, of Atlanta Koi Club, said their Annual Auction is April 18th; he will write up an article for KOI USA about it. Their Pond Tour is June 27th; Show is Sept. 11-13. (Contact Don Chandler to make sure it’s put in the magazine). Several members attended the Central Florida Koi Show last month and the Middle Georgia Koi Show at the end of the month. Next, after the auction, the club is participating in a Showa spawning and grow out. Vicki, at the Koi Store (formally Flatrock Koi) has procured some very nice showa oyagoi and they plan to spawn them next month. Participants will help cull the spawn in various stages and at a certain point will pick 10 fingerlings to grow out. It will be an interesting look into the difficulties in producing a topnotch showa. Should be fun! Future events are a fundraiser garage sale, another pond tour and their show (later part of the year).

February
Atlanta Koi Club is getting ready for our April auction on the 18th of that month. Think I already mentioned that to you and I promised to take pictures and write an article. Diane Giangrande is trying to find an alternative site to hold the show, it has been in a pond supply warehouse for last two years and some want a change. Hard to find a site for a show. It will be the 21th show. Postponed march meeting a week so several of us can go to the Central Florida Koi show. Hard for us in Georgia to show as my fish are in 44 degree water and have not been fed for two months. Only two weeks to the show so my fish will definitely not be traveling. Will buy a couple there to enter something in the show.  Last meeting I gave a lecture on coming out of winter and how to prepare your pond and the steps you take as water warms up. I was appalled at how many do no water changes in the winter at all. I don’t think many of them understand even now. Some just want to put salt in the water(don’t understand that either) and ignore till the warm water returns….oh well they will figure it out one day. Pond tour in July   show in September.  That’s about it for this month, can’t wait for our season to begin with the Florida Show……Later….Gary Elmore.

November
Gary Gelmore, of Atlanta Koi Club, reports they just finished up for the year with our social last weekend. We don’t meet in Dec because of the holidays. Elections were held in October.  Our plans for 2013 include a pond tour in the spring, a booth at the Southeastern Flower show (big event that exposes thousands of people to the hobby), our annual club auction in the spring (last year we had some really nice fish in the auction, many show quality) and of course our annual show in September. We hope to once again have it in conjunction with the Japan fest held every year here in Atlanta. Last year we had 19 thousand pass by the show. Spent many hours answering questions about Koi. Drew the biggest crowd when we started bagging fish for the ride home. None of them could believe we put them in plastic bags to move. I was elected president for this term so I will be assigning this task to someone else. I will let you know their info when that happens.

Atlanta KCNext Sunday May 20 is the club’s meeting and we are delighted to have Mike from Hammock Koi Farm coming with beautiful koi for sale. April
Atlanta Koi Club: We are having our annual koi auction this coming Saturday. I am going to go to setup here in a couple of hours. Last year we had over 300 fish and this year it will top 400. Biggest fund raiser that we have for the club. Proceeds are 75-25 owner/club. We will raise between 3-4k for the club. Clubs that don’t do this are missing out on a great time as well as a great money maker. It is also great for koi buying addicts (such as myself) to move on the ones that did not turn out the way you want. Speaking of auctions, my wife and I are driving up to Ray Abell’s auction on May 5th.

March
Gary Elmore, the AKCA Rep will be at the Central Florida Koi Show this weekend. He and his wife Joann are coming down on Wednesday for the show and will be there till Sunday.
