Phyllis Anderson, of North Idaho Koi Keepers, said they met at the home of Dan & Sharon Olson for a review of the Fall harvest in Mushigame and Isawa in Japan. Hosted by Toshio Sakai and his family, their club members who were able to make yet another trip to Japan enjoyed the festivities of the Harvest, the auctions and the camaraderie of good friends. Rich Squires, of Hoshi Koi, also made the Japan trip to work with the Sakai crew and continue to learn more from their experiences; he drove from Tacoma to Spokane just to participate in their workshop. They enjoyed a beautiful photo presentation of the harvest and many, many beautiful koi – and videos that Kyle took of a lot of the action that really gave them the experience of the sights and sounds that took the presentation to a whole new level. Their thanks to their members for sharing their experiences once again and giving all the attendees the chance to catch up with their Japanese friends and koi keepers.

Phyllis Anderson, of North Idaho Koi Keepers, said they started out the season with a visitor from Japan. Hoshi Sakai traveled with a koi shipment destined for Hoshi Koi in Tacoma and NIKK members. He spent a day visiting member’s ponds in Spokane and North Idaho, offering ideas and sharing treatments they use at Isawa ponds in Spokane and North Idaho, offering ideas and sharing treatments they use at Isawa Nishikigoi. Many club members gathered to treat Hoshi to a steak dinner at Wolf Lodge in Coeur d’Alene. When his father, Toshio Sakai, last visited their club, he had enjoyed the novelty of dinner at Wolf Lodge, so it was fun that his son had the same experience at this unique dining establishment. They have their first workshop of the year scheduled in April at Dan & Sharon Olson’s pond to see new arrivals and see how this pond is covered and heated during the winter months. In May, they will have a workshop at Gene & Phyllis Anderson’s pond in Hayden. June will see a trip to one of their new members in Newport to visit the pond of Nancy Houghton and her daughter Kellie Berthauser so that they can offer advice to these new koi keepers. Another new member, Mike Kempf in Sandpoint, is putting in a new pond and Gene has been advising him. She’s sure they will have a workshop at this home soon. Workshops for the rest of the season will be scheduled as members want to host the group. They have no plans for a koi show, but members are sure to travel to shows on the Koi Show Tour as much as possible this year.

Sharon Olson, Judy Linnebach and Kyle McNaught-Davis all attended the All Japan Koi Show in Tokyo and took part in a ZNA Judging class where they were actually given the opportunity to view and judge selected koi from the show. Of course they all did very well. For those who have never attended this koi show, it’s just overwhelming. About 1500 beautiful nishikigoi were entered in the competition. We’ll get some pictures posted on our website soon. Check out their website at http://www.northidahokoikeepers.com/id8.html.

January 2013
Phyllis Anderson, of North Idaho Koi Keepers, reports they have reserved meeting room #2 at the Post Falls library for their Jan 12, 2013 workshop that is scheduled to start at 10:00 A.M. This workshop should “spawn” lots of dialogue towards helping those that are interested in improving and/or building a new koi pond. Dan and I will be kicking off the session talking about our own ponds as to what we might or would do different to our koi ponds as well as sharing our views of what we consider as positive features. I would like to encourage each of you to also be prepared to share your thoughts about your existing koi facilities.  Those of you that are unable to attend the workshop due travel distance, it would be fantastic if you would send me an email of what you would do different to your existing pond, how you would improve it or what you would do different if you were to build a new koi pond. Please share what and why you like certain things about your present koi pond also. We have some experienced koi keepers like the Nichols, Benbows, Covers and Charbonneau that have many years of experience and have built and/or modified a number of ponds. I would like to encourage these pond owners to also share via email to me their thoughts that I addressed earlier. I am sure Jan’s workshop will probably spill over into our Feb workshop as well.  Check out their website at http://www.northidahokoikeepers.com/id8.html.
