James McAdams, of Deep South Koi & Pond Society, reports the club held its Apr meeting at the Houmas House plantation south of Baton Rouge. While enjoying a wonderful afternoon tea, they reviewed their first koi show. While they have areas where they want to improve, everyone was energized by their rookie efforts. A vote was taken on whether they want to continue hosting a koi show and the result was unanimous. YES!  Following the meeting, members had time to tour the magnificent grounds of Houmas House. It was the perfect time to visit there as so many things were in bloom. Check out their website at www.deepsouthkoi.org/.

James McAdams, of Deep South Koi & Pond Society, reports their 2nd annual Koi & Goldfish Show was March 14, 2015 at the John M. Parker Agricultural Coliseum on the LSU campus. It was held during the Baton Rouge Spring Garden Show. We’d like to thank those who participated in our event & all who came to see the beautiful entries! Members of SELAS, the Southeast Louisiana Aquarium Society, generously offered their time and use of their aquariums and other equipment in making the goldfish portion of the show a success. We’re very grateful for their participation. We were honored to welcome our knowledgeable koi judge, Troy Head to this year’s event as well as Tony Reynolds, who judged the goldfish. James McAdams, of Deep South Koi & Pond Society, reports the club held its June meeting at the home of Gerald and Janis Bonds and celebrated its 21st birthday!  We are now legal. Gerald smoked chicken and several kinds of sausage, while the rest of the members brought side dishes. The birthday cake followed. Plans are in the works for a July field trip to visit a breeder of hybrid water lilies in Thibodaux, LA. and has also begun plans for creating its first Friendship Award.  We are aiming to have members attend either the Dallas or San Antonio show this Fall.  Check out their website at www.deepsouthkoi.org/.

James McAdams, of Deep South Koi & Pond Society, reports in conjunction with the LSU Garden club and SELAS (South East Louisiana Aquarium Society) I am excited to announce that we will be hosting the first annual Koi and Goldfish show Mar the 29th, 2014 at the LSU Lawn and Garden show in Baton Rouge. The club took a final vote yesterday and with 100% approval we are happy to announce that the show is a go! The setting up will take place on Friday; all entries will be entered on Saturday morning; judging will be done Saturday; and the awards will be done Saturday evening so that the fish can be returned back to their homes on Saturday evening. Suggestions were made for future activities of the club and the club voted to form a committee for planning to hold a koi show, possibly next year. Several members volunteered to serve on the committee which will meet and report back to the club. After the business meeting the club held it’s ever popular plant swap. James McAdams, of Deep South Koi & Pond Society, reports their 2013 Pond Tour was held on Saturday and Sunday – May 18 and 19. Dozens of lovely private ponds were open throughout the Baton Rouge Area. There were two beneficiaries of the 2013 Tour of Ponds. Brave Heart Children in Need. This is a Baton Rouge organization was founded in July, 2004. They focus on improving quality of life for children who endure the emotional trauma of being removed from their homes due to abuse and/or neglect. Yelp! This organization provides shelter and adoption services for dogs. Founded in 2009, Yelp! is committed to ending euthanasia of healthy and treatable companion animals in the Greater Baton Rouge Area. Discussions included a recap of the club’s successful participation in the LSU Garden Show, continued plans for our May pond tour and our 20th Birthday Celebration in June. Plans were discussed for the upcoming LSU Garden Show in Mar and for our annual Tour of Ponds for charity. Elections of officers for 2013 were held during the brief business meeting. The new officers are President, James McAdams; Vice-President, Pattie Murray; Secretary, Linda McAdams; and Treasurer, Buzz Werline. After the meeting we all had a wonderful banquet of food brought by the members, followed by our always popular gift swap. James McAdams, of Deep South Koi & Pond Society, reports the club held its Sep meeting at Houmas House Plantation. Members toured the beautiful gardens including a large fountain / Koi pond. James McAdams, of Deep South Koi & Pond Society, reports the club held its August Meeting at Ornamental Pond Fish in Port Allen, LA, a breeder of Koi and Fancy Goldfish. Mike Christensen, the owner, talked about their family operation and held a discussion with club members on various issues with their ponds including storm preparation as a result of Hurricane Isaac which would hit the Baton Rouge area a few days later. The highlight of the visit was a judging exercise in which Mike selected 4 koi and challenged the group to match his selection of how they would finish at a show. James McAdams, of Deep South Koi & Pond Society, reports they held their July meeting at the home of Linda and James McAdams. The club discussed the possibility of donating proceeds of its Pond Tour to more than one charity next year. It was agreed that this will merit further discussion when the next Tour committee is formed. Ray Jordan has accepted the club’s invitation to come speak to the club on December 8th of this year on “How to Do a Koi Show”. It was decided to combine Ray’s presentation with our annual Christmas Party. It was also announced that our club is one of the two recipients of this year’s AKCA Speaker’s Grants of up to $250.00. James McAdams, of Deep South Koi & Pond Society, reports the club held its July Meeting and Birthday Celebration at the home of Gerald and Janis Bonds. The club discussed the results of our annual Pond Tour. While the numbers are not yet final, the club will net about $1600.00 and this year’s charity, Braveheart, will receive about $6400. Paul Charbonnet volunteered to be interviewed by KOI USA for a future magazine article re: their Pond Tour. The club also voted to invite Ray Jordan back to speak to us about “Putting on a Koi Show”. The meeting adjourned and we enjoyed some fantastic grilled chicken and sausage, side dishes supplied by the members, followed by Birthday Cake.  Check out their website at www.deepsouthkoi.org/.

James McAdams, of Deep South Koi & Pond Society, reports the club held its annual Pond Tour on May 19th and 20th. Over 20 ponds were on tour throughout the Baton Rouge area. Although a final accounting is not yet available, the Pond Tour was a tremendous success. Our Club is making final preparations for its Birthday Party to be held on June 16th. James McAdams, of Deep South K&PS, reports they held their Apr meeting at the home of Ann and Mike Simmers. Plans for our upcoming Pond Tour were discussed. We also discussed a possible field trip to an Asian Garden in Port Arthur, TX. In addition, the club voted on beginning a search for a speaker that we could bring in to speak to us on a Koi related topic since we are eligible to be placed into the lottery for one of the Speaker’s Grants. Following the meeting we all enjoyed seeing the Simmer’s enormous pond and they also showed us video of some of their Koi spawning on the very morning of our meeting.

The Deep South Koi and Pond Society participated in the annual LSU Garden Show, March 24th and 25th in lieu of the March meeting. Club members manned a booth where they sold Koi, Goldfish and plants donated by their members. Plans are also continuing for our Pond Tour to be held next month.

James McAdams, reports the club held its February meeting at Harb’s Oasis (a local garden center). They discussed plans for their upcoming participation at the LSU Garden Show on Mar 24th and 25th. The club will have a booth where they will be selling plants and fish, as well as recruiting new members to join the club. Plans are also continuing for their annual Pond Tour to be held in May. Following the meeting, Charbel Harb (owner of Harb’s Oasis) updated members on a number of new products for ponds while they enjoyed a terrific selection of snacks provided by Harb’s.

James McAdams, of Deep South K&PS, reports they met January 22 at the home of Sandra Auck.  The Group discussed and voted to accept “Braveheart Children in Need” as the recipient of funds from the 2012 “Tour of Ponds & Gardens.”  Suggestions were made on ideas to add new ponds to the tour as well as sell more tickets.  A planning meeting will be held at the end of February for the upcoming LSU Garden Show to be held March 24 & 25.  The Club will again sell water and garden plants, goldfish and koi.

James McAdams, of Deep South K&PS, reports they will be holding their first meeting of 2012 and planning their new year’s activities on Sun., Jan. 22nd at the home of Sandra Auck.  He sent emails to all their members suggesting they purchase KOI USA subscriptions as Xmas stocking stuffers.  Great idea, James!
