Dick Hadley, of Upper Midwest Koi Club, reports we had more of a club gathering this week end at Koi Acres rather than a formal club meeting.  Saturday Takahiro Omosako was here to judge a group of Omosako shiro utsuri that we sold off for a grow out competition last year. Champion went to Bill Doyle of Chicago. Sunday was an auction held by Koi Acres and many of us were there as well having a good time. Next Saturday we are doing a dry run for our show in August.  We are going to run our own computer program this year, after having had John and Barb Flowers doing it for us since our first show.  Wish us luck! Check their website at www.uppermidwestkoiclub.org.

After some club membership items Ben presented a very good filter presentation.  He has a pond with mostly homemade filters including sand filters in a big drum, and a rotating drum.  His water and his fish looked fantastic.  He had all the parts, and helped members assemble a sand filter made in a big (55 gal or so) drum. Our attendance at meetings has been consistently greater than last few years.  Our show and auctions have attracted several new members who seem to be staying around and getting involved. Next meeting May 7. Check their website at www.uppermidwestkoiclub.org.

March
Dick Hadley, of Upper Midwest Koi Club, reports the club held its monthly meeting last weekend at the Pond Store, one of our vendor sponsors. We had 23-25 people there–our attendance lately has been consistently higher than average with the recruitment and more importantly retention of new members. We discussed issues regarding spring warm up and koi vulnerability in the spring. We also presented a new grow out contest for this summer. Michelle Gravenish was a candidate judge in Orlando this past week end. Joe Retterath, Michael Chang, and Dick Hadley all went down for the show and had a great time hanging out with koi people and enjoying a great show. We introduced new board members as well as new members.  Several of our members presented either video or still picture presentations of winter storage, winter issues, or in my case pictures of a tumor on the fin of a fish that was removed surgically by Dr. Amy Kizer. Several of us plan to go to Orlando for the Central Florida show, including Michelle who is a candidate judge. Check their website at www.uppermidwestkoiclub.org.

Dick Hadley, of Upper Midwest Koi Club, reports on June 6 we held a koi auction at Bachman’s Nursery, where we hold our annual show.  We auctioned off over 70 bags of koi and raised $4,000 for the club.  We were aided by the efforts of a real auctioneer who added entertainment value as well as speeded up the process. We were pleased. On June 13 we had our monthly club meeting.  It was held at a member’s house who lives quite a ways out of town.  Attendance was sparse as we talked about getting koi ready for a show. Joe Retterach, Michelle Gravenish, and Dick Hadley went to the Chicago MPKS show the end of June.  Joe and Dick came back with some trophies and we all had a great time mixing with the Chicago club members. Our next club meeting is next Saturday as we get ready for our show on August 1 and 2. Check their website at www.uppermidwestkoiclub.org.

At this point we anticipate our show to be the first week end in August.  Several of us plan on entering fish in the Chicago show next year.  This is partly in response to their support of our show, and also to “show the flag” and try to raise the profile of our club.  We tentatively plan to hold the first club meeting next year in March at the home of Ron Sterbenz, who is a former club member and who has a very extensive and impressive green house containing a pond, extensive filtering, and plant growing facilities. We think that will be a good spot to entertain new members and increase enthusiasm.  Check their website at www.uppermidwestkoiclub.org.
