Jerry Woodbury, of Miami Valley WGS, said they recently had a very successful public pond tour where they were able to pick up 7 new members.

Jerry Woodbury, of Miami Valley WGS, said they are preparing for their annual pond tour. This will be a Public Pond Tour taking place on July 29th & 30th. There will be 5 pond’s on each day and the tour is from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Jerry Woodbury, of Miami Valley WGS, said that this month they’re having an offsite meeting at a local garden center.

Jerry Woodbury, of Miami Valley WGS, said that this month is their annual plant swap to help new members to get their ponds stocked with some new plants and swap out some with other members whom might need to fill in a needed plant area.

Jerry Woodbury, of Miami Valley WGS, said that in Ohio, they are having an unusually mild winter so far. With that they are able to watch their ponds a lot more carefully. This month their speaker will talk about attracting birds to their backyard gardens.

Jerry Woodbury, of Miami Valley WGS, said they are all watching their ponds in the new year as the weather begins to turn colder. This month, Jerry will be showing a slide presentation of their past pond tours. This is an attempt to motivate members to start thinking of warmer days ahead and to maybe sign up for the 2016 tour.

Jerry Woodbury, of Miami Valley WGS, said that the weekend of August 7 through 9th some members from the club made the trip over to St. Louis. While there they visited the Jewel Box in the Forest Park, which is maintained by the St. Louis Water Garden Society. This was an amazingly well kept water garden display of lilies, lotus, and arrowhead plants. They also toured the Botanical Gardens with the Chinese Lantern display. This month they will be having a roundtable discussion about problems and solutions of members ponds.

Jerry Woodbury, of Miami Valley WGS, said this month they are working with the Dayton Koi Club to have a Private Pond Tour on July 25/26th. Their meeting will be held at Secret Garden in Waynesville, Ohio.

Jerry Woodbury, of Miami Valley WGS, said they had their pond club plant swap at the May meeting and it was quite exciting to see such a success plant swap.  This month they have a road trip planned to Brown County, Indiana and their meeting is off-site at a local nursery to discuss problems with the summer heat and their plants.

Jerry Woodbury, of Miami Valley WGS, said last month they had Tracy Bleim, from Cedar Bog, at the meeting with a PowerPoint presentation showing the bog throughout the varying seasons.  This month the club is having a plant swap, which has been moved to the spring instead of having it in the fall.

Jerry Woodbury, of Miami Valley WGS, said they are still fighting the “Arctic Vortex” that the weather people keep forecasting.  Spring is in sight so they are all hopeful.  Next month they have Tony Niekamp, from H30 Art and Stone, a local pond builder, give a talk about how to revamp your pond.

Jerry Woodbury, of Miami Valley WGS, said they had their Annual Club Dinner where they had over 50 people show up despite the severe snow storm that came in.  This month they have a speaker from Wegerzyn Gardens talking to the club.  They are watching their ponds very closely during this deep freeze that is sweeping across the country.

Jerry Woodbury, of Miami Valley WGS, said they just had their club picnic and are looking forward to having a round table discussion at the next meeting. They will have talks about closing down the pond for winter, dealing with tropical plants, and any other issues with the ponds.

Jerry Woodbury, of Miami Valley WGS, said they had their first meeting of the year last month where Betty Hovel gave a talk on “Mother” knows best.”  It referenced following ways and seeing what Mother Nature has to offer as far as dealing with gardening and ponds.  This coming month they will have Dr. Dave Smith from Freshwater Farms of Ohio talking about “Constructed Wetlands and Bogs.”

Jerry Woodbury, of Miami Valley WGS, said that they had a successful pond tour and were able to not only show off their beautiful ponds but were able to sign up some new members who were not aware that the club even existed.  Now they have just 3 more meetings left this year.  They are planning on going to Jones Fish Hatchery on August 11th.  They are also having their club picnic on Sept. 15.
