Wendell Ford, of Charleston Showa Koi Club, reports the club held its monthly meeting at the home of Linda Lewis on August 13 for breakfast. There was discussion on upcoming regional Koi shows. Wendell Ford, of Charleston Showa Koi Club, reports the July meeting was held at the home of Wendell and Virginia Ford. Delicious smoked turkey was served. The majority of the meeting was finalizing the details of the Pond Tour. The August meeting was a work meeting at the home of Robert and Linda Lewis. The location for the Pond Tour Grand Finale. Wendell Ford, of Charleston Showa Koi Club, reports the meeting was held at Johnnie Smith’s house and there were 15 members present. Linda called the meeting to order in Rod’s absence. Linda said the club got a thank you letter from Carol Beyer’s mother. Linda also let us know that we lost another former club member, Ti Hanley, who died recently. Susan gave a talk on preparing your pond for a hurricane. The club picked July 18th to go to the koi farm in Estill. We will meet at the Carolina Koi Farm at 8 a.m. and caravan up. Wendell Ford, of Charleston Showa Koi Club, reports June will be a busy month for club members. The South Carolina Koi & Watergarden Show will be held on Sat the 13th. On Sunday the 14th the club’s meeting will be at 2 p.m. at Johnnie Smith’s home. And on Sat the 20th members won’t want to miss the Carolina Koi Farm Open House. Wendell Ford, of Charleston Showa Koi Club, reports the meeting was held at Robert and Linda Lewis’ house, there were 15 people present. Plans for the Aquarium tour were finalized. It will be held on March 18th at 2pm. Rod talked about the club’s exhibit that will be held at Tideline Aquatics on April 11th. Robert said the Tour of the Carolina Koi farm will be held on June 20th. He will have a contest with tanks of different breeds of koi and everyone has to pick which one is the best. Wendell Ford, of Charleston Showa Koi Club, the June 8th meeting was held at Chris Deer’s house with 12 people present.  Minutes from last meeting were read. Meeting locations were discussed and it was decided the July meeting would be at the Leard’s house and September meeting would be at the MacNeil’s house. No other topics were discussed and the meeting was turned over to Chris who talked about water quality. Chris gave out some water test kits and plants. Wendell Ford reports in Feb we met at the house of Greg Nichols and Barbara Borg. It was a great meeting a good time was had by all. We discussed the upcoming Koi of the year contest entries. Robert Lewis gave some good tips on capturing the perfect picture.  Our March meeting was held at the Orlando Koi Show. Congratulations go to Grant and Penny Patton for winning yet another award at Orlando: Reserve Grand Champion.  Burk (Mac) McGreevy from Port Arthur, TX, won our Friendship Award for the best potential showa. Wendell Ford, of Charleston Showa Koi Club, reports the meeting was held at Mary Ball’s club house with 19 people present.  Outgoing President Robert Lewis thanked everyone for letting him serve as president for the last two years and for their support. The following persons were elected to club positions: Rod MacNeal for president; Linda Lewis for vice president; Wendell Ford for AKCA representative; Susan Markum for secretary; and Mary for treasurer.  Robert then reminded everyone of the upcoming Orlando koi show.  The pond tour was brought up and now is the time to start asking companies for donations since they are setting their budget now for the next year. We are so grateful for the generous outpouring of support we have seen from all the people that love Robert! Johnna Hansen, of Charleston Showa Koi Club, reports Grant and Penny Patton won Grand Champion at the Central Florida Koi Show in 2012 and 2013; also in 2013 they won Grand Champion at the Greater Louisville Koi Show. We also want to say great job to Susan Markham for winning AKCA Koi of the Year. Now Ralph Owens has won Grand Champion at the Carolina Classic Koi Show. Johnna Hansen, of Charleston Showa Koi Club, reports the Jun meeting will be on the 10th at Kathy and Trish’s; the topic will be water plants for your pond and we’ll be having a plant swap. Robert Lewis will present a health tip, too. Our 10th Annual Pond and Water Garden Tour is just around the corner on Sat, May 11. Come tour over 20 ponds within our surrounding Charleston suburbs. This will be the tenth year for the tour so we are planning to change it up just a little. At this point we don’t know just what we are going to do to make it better but we are going to do something. Also we would like to welcome our new Vice President Rod Mc Neil and our new Treasurer Mary Ball. Both have been long term members and we are glad to have them on the board. Johnna Hansen, of Charleston Showa Koi Club, reports their club was pleased to be able to offer the Kodama Class II on August 11/12 at the Holiday Inn Express in North Charleston, featuring Goshiki/Koromo, Asagi/Shusui, Hikarimono and Kawarimono.  This was a unique opportunity to be taught by one of the most well known dealers in the US – and the father son combination gave an entertaining and informative presentation. Johnna Hansen, of Charleston Showa Koi Club, reports the club met at Carolina Koi Farm for the July meeting. Although it was hot we had a great turnout! Robert Lewis talked about the new judging standards for butterfly koi. We also discussed changes to our bylaws. After the pond tour, finances were settled and we were able to donate $1000 to the Charleston Animal Society. Johnna Hansen, of Charleston Showa Koi Club, reports the Charleston Showa Koi club meeting for June was on Sunday the 10th. We had a plant swap planned and Trish Bender was our speaker. She taught us some Latin names for plants and went over the difference between water plants and land plants. We were all happy to see Jim Leard who had been hospitalized. Johnna Hansen, of Charleston Showa KC, reports the Apr meeting at Mary and Jim Leard’s featured a discussion on spawning, club Koi of the Year picture judging and club Koi Person of the Year Voting.  Instead of a meeting in May, we held our 9th Annual Pond Tour on Sat May 12th.  Our club has decided to host the Kodama Class II.  Many of us were able to benefit from the first class, we will be one of the first clubs in this area to host Class II and I for one am very excited that we have this opportunity. We have sent this information out to other clubs, but are only giving them the opportunity to sign up after May 31. The class is limited to 30 people.  Congratulations to Grant and Penny Patton whose koi won Grand Champion at the recent Central Florida show.

Johnna Hansen, of Charleston Showa Koi Club, reports we had a great meeting today at the Leards. They have a beautiful home and pond on James Island and they are well stocked with koi! We enjoyed a presentation on spawning. We also voted for our Koi Person of the Year. Congratulations to Linda Lewis. Linda has always been willing to do for our club and at the moment she is working on our pond tour, she helps with the food at the grand finale and she also takes care of our newsletter!  Thanks Linda for all you do!

Johnna Hansen, reports their club rescheduled the Mar meeting to allow for members attending the Orlando show. Also they are all very sad with the passing of one their clubs founding fathers, Raymond Kennerty. They will miss him!

Johnna Hansen, of Charleston Showa KC, reports the club met and learned some tips on taking photos of koi.  They are still planning their 9th Annual Pond Tour on May 12 and have 27 ponds and private gardens in the Charleston, SC area signed up to participate.  They are sad to report they will discontinue including a subscription to KOI USA with membership dues, as Treasurer Ralph Owens has explained how difficult it has been for him to arrange all of this.  They are all looking forward to Orlando!

Robert Lewis, of Charleston Showa KC, reports in March they will be picking their Koi of the Year and Koi Person of the Year.  Their 9th Annual Pond Tour will be held May 12th from 9am until 4pm, with tickets priced at $10 and proceeds to benefit the Charleston Animal Society.
