His current major road works project is in Dallas, so he moved. The title of his presentation was “How to Build a Pond in Rock, and take only 5 years”. We also had a short talk on how to build a pond cover that can be easily set up and taken down, given by Ben Soedjono. The nomination and election of new officers was postponed a few days later. Vicki Patsdauter is volunteering as the next President, Gwen O’Connor as VP. Mike Moffitt remains as Treasurer, and Jan Brown as Secretary. August
Vicki Patsdauter, of Dallas Koi Kichi Group, reports the hot August meeting was held at the home of Lisa Herrick in McKinney Texas. This meeting agenda concerned the future of the club, and what we can do to adapt to a changing hobby. I have heard from other clubs the same concerns. Older members are getting out of the hobby, or scaling down their participation at events and meetings, and newer members are fewer and not able/willing to participate in the actual work of putting on a koi show, or go to meetings. We are not the only ones experiencing this. So, we talked about a poll that I sent out asking for input, and for ideas to grow and vitalize the club. The discussion was very helpful, lively and will continue as we find ways to pull members and future members into making the club fun and helpful to their growth as a hobbyist. Stay tuned! We also had our election for officers, Vicki Patsdauter will continue as President and Brian von Merveldt as Vice President; Jan Brown will be Secretary; and Michael Moffitt will be Treasurer. Vicki thanked the previous board for their service, and the newly elected for stepping forward. John Ames gave a wonderful presentation on “Nishikigoi – Living Jewels” which included photos and video from his fall trip to Japan. The next meeting will be held at John Ames house on August 28 and will be focused specifically on the upcoming koi show the first weekend in October. Check out their website at http://www.dallaskoikichi.org.

July
Ben Soedjono, of Dallas Koi Kichi Group, reports Vicki Patsdauter gave a small report on the Wet Lab that she and John Ames attended the end of June. There were folks from across the country at this seminar, from Florida to California, and Iowa to South Carolina.   This seminar was originally designed as the end requirement to become a Koi Health Advisor.  They are now allowing folks to take it first, with the written curriculum to be assigned later, or for personal information.  Dr. Nick Saint Erne, DVM was the main speaker.  The wet lab was largely lecture, with some time set aside at the end of the day for teaching taking biopsies, scrapes and snips of fins and then looking for parasites, etc. under the microscope.  Although John and I have used a microscope before, it was interesting in light of the lecture.  If you are looking for a local vet that specializes in koi, you can go to www.aquavetmed.info to find a list.  When I checked our area, 5 names came up, including Dr. David Landers, who has been a corporate sponsor of DKK.  There was a Banquet on Saturday night and a large amount of items donated to be raffled off or for an auction.  Check out their website at http://www.dallaskoikichi.org/.

Ben Soedjono, of Dallas Koi Kichi Group, reports they announced the Koi Person of the Year (who happened to be the host of the March meeting). I suggested that she also gets Llama Person of the Year (since her llama won State Grand Champion), but that was “out of our jurisdiction”. The meeting was about diagnosing koi health issues associated with warmer temperatures in spring; Sunny Ea (our membership officer) gave the presentation and conducted the wet lab. Carol Marthens and Michael Starkey caught the catfish and tosai in Carol’s mud pond the day before, using a seine and there are some snippets on YouTube. August
Ben Soedjono, of Dallas Koi Kichi Group, said that due to the heat they only had a koi show planning meeting.

July
Ben Soedjono, of Dallas Koi Kichi Group, said they are planning for their koi show; otherwise, too hot for any activity.  This is the 10th koi show for the club.

June
Ben Soedjono, of Dallas Koi Kichi Group, said their last meeting he explained and showed videos of the 3 times they had to redo the spray on liner to their pond, and the final plaster coat that solved the problems.  They discussed preparations of their upcoming show; did very well with their koi auction (even better than last year).  The store owners want them to continue next year at the store as he got extra business from the auction.  The club is learning new tricks on running a koi show by visiting other shows; the club is growing and their newest member joined from researching the local koi clubs on the internet websites.

May
Ben Soedjono, of Dallas Koi Kichi Group, said their auction went well; don’t know how much they made yet but prices were good.  Hopefully, Ray Jordan will be the speaker for their next month’s meeting.

April
Ben Soedjono, of Dallas Koi Kichi Group, said the tornadoes hit 2 blocks away but nobody hurt.  They are having a koi auction on April 28.  The club is going to talk about generators and what one would be best for the member’s ponds.  Sandi is going to do a demonstration of how to repair a split fin.

March
Ben Soedjono, said their last meeting was about how to build a foam fractionators.

February
Ben Soedjono, of Dallas Koi Kichi Group, said there are no meetings until March due to weather.  Got Dallas out of the drought due to rain; they plan on their annual auction which is a money maker for the club.

January
Ben Soedjono, of Dallas Koi Kichi Group, said they had a Christmas party on Dec. 3rd with a summary of the koi show in pictures.  Also, they had a short review of goals for the next team of officers.  One new idea is to give the memberships to the presidents of the other koi and water garden clubs in the Dallas area to forge closer ties.  Just before Christmas, they prepared a plaque to the manager of Bass Pro Shops, who provided the show site, banquet site and meet-and-greet.  They tried to persuade him to change the name to Koi Pro Shops, but he declined because he needs to sell fishing boats too.  Just Kidding!  No meetings until March, but several of them are joining San Antonio and Houston for a visit to Purdin Koi Farm in Louisiana on January 14.
