May
Paul Moss, of Lone Star KC, said their meeting was held at the home of Andrew and Lisa Bradley who have completed their new pond. There was a good turnout of the membership and a general business meeting was held.  Topics of discussion were the pond tour now being held this year in the first week in May in order to avoid the summer heat and humidity of Houston.  The AKCA Wet Lab volunteer groups were formed to man the various functions associated with the meeting, as well as discussions regarding the banquet.  In addition, volunteers to obtain products and services for the associated raffle/silent auction were assigned.  Also, tanks and “volunteer” fish for the Lab were arranged.  The offer to attend the Lab has been extended to other Texas clubs in major cities.  Upcoming meetings will include nominations of new officers and equipment purchases.

February
Paul Moss, of the Lone Star KC, said their February meeting was held at the home of Scott and Linda Sartorius, past president.  Among the topics discussed were the correct methods of potassium permanganate applications and dosage amounts.  An update to the AKCA Wet Lab meeting to be held in Houston the last weekend in June was delivered by Melanie Nau who is their specific contact for this event.  As usual, the attendance was excellent as their club has grown by 30% in the past year alone.  The website is past due for a major overhaul and is currently in the design stage with suggestions and ideas being solicited from the membership.

January 2014
The 2013 December meeting, Christmas party, and annual auction were held simultaneously at the home of Richard and Ardis Black. A large attendance despite cold inclement  weather was reflective of the 30% gain in membership experienced during the year. Election of officers was held with Melanie Nau as President, Paul Moss as 1st.VP and Donny Bayer as 2nd VP all  elected by unanimous consent. In addition, all other officers from the preceding year remained in their respective positions. The auction was a major success with items ranging from fish, garden ornaments, pond equipment, and various and sundry items all donated by the membership with all funds going to the club general account. An officer’s meeting will be held in early January to plan the coming year’s activities including pond pulls, bulk breeder fish purchases, the hosting of the AKCA business meeting and Wet Lab, the Houston area Pond Tour, and continued membership growth strategies.

November
Melanie Nau, of Lone Star Koi Club, issued  a reminder for Ardie and Richard Black’s December 8th party (2 pm.)  They will have smoked turkey and ham, and the club will provide wine and beer.  Members should bring side dishes.  Don’t forget that this is also our annual auction to offset our club’s expenses.  So bring pond and lifestyle stuff that folks will bid on. They won’t have another regular meeting until February; however, officers and interested parties will be meeting in January to plan events for 2014. Topics will include the May pond tour, June AKCA health lab, and website content.  Please feel free to contribute.  Also, the member contact list has been updated and is ready to send out to members.  If you have any last minute additions, please let me know ASAP.  Paul Moss has been named 1st VP for 2014.  Let’s all thank Don Bayer for his years of service to our club.

October
Paul Moss, of Lone Star Koi Club, reports the September meeting was held at the home of Vince and Patsy Peragine. This was primarily a business meeting with nomination for next year’s officers for the election in December. The current officers, President Melanie Nau, Vice-President Paul Moss and Treasurer Buddy Bush were all nominated and will run unopposed. The AKCA KHV meeting was a primary topic with Melanie Nau volunteering to be the LSKC representative and contact person for arrangements and details. She is in discussion with the Omni hotel for a special rate and use of amenities as the Omni fulfills any requirements and facilities that the meeting will require. They also have a koi pond which has been stocked by the LSKC over the years through our rescue program. The club is certainly excited with the prospect of hosting the AKCA and the opportunity of attending the wet lab as many from the club wish to attend. Our mud pond pull on October 6th at the country property of member Dr. Hoang was a success, especially as breakfast and lunch were served by the club!

August
Paul Moss, of Lone Star KC, said their monthly meeting was held at 20+ year members Grady and Virginia Joiner’s home. Great attendance and several new members attending. The club was thrilled to have the AKCA Wet Lab hosted in Houston in 2014 and their President, Melanie Nau, was chosen to be the contact person and coordinator for the event. Paul Moss gave a lecture on the effective use of potassium permanganate and the dangers of overuse. Their mud pond pull has been scheduled for the first weekend in October.

July
Don Bayer, of the Lone Star KC, will place on their meeting agenda hosting details re: the AKCA Seminar in Houston in June, 2014. They need to confirm that they are going to host it and name a person with their club to work with the AKCA folks on that Seminar.

June
Lone Star Koi Club says nothing to report as no meeting was held owing to the pond tour.

May
Paul Moss, of Lone Star KC, said their April meeting was held at the home of Robert and Denise Wall, a nice 1920’s house that Robert & Denise had completely remodeled and restored with impeccable craftsmanship over several years of hard work. His pond was completely covered by a wood pergola which made this a perfect meeting site on a beautiful day. Other than the regular business of the club, a lively discussion was held on the subject of koi food, what was best and what was not so beneficial when it came to the listed content of the food? As to be expected, similar to asking 10 members what is the optimum temperature to stop feeding over winter, you’ll get 12 different answers. Food and feeding schedules were no different in this case. May will be the Pond Tour held in conjunction with the Houston Pond Society over the weekend of May 4th and 5th.

April
Paul Moss, of Lone Star KC, said that Taro Kodama made his annual trip to Houston on April 6th with one of their members and brought quite a selection of higher quality koi from breeders like Dainichi, Isa, etc. The event was well attended. April’s meeting will be held on the 21st at Robert & Denise Wall’s home. Meanwhile, preparations are underway for the 2013 Annual Pond Tour they hold in cooperation with the Houston Pond Society. This is a two day event on the weekend of May 4-th. Details are available for those interested at their website www.lonestarkoi.com.

March
Don Bayer, of Lone Star KC, said their Mar 17th meeting will be at Melanie Nau & Karen Green’s home; topic is Pond Transition from Winter to Spring. On May 4-5 they will have their Pond Tour.

October
Don Bayer, of Lone Star KC, said their September meeting was held at the home of Virginia and Grady Joiner.  The meeting was well attended and further discussion was held regarding attendance of the San Antonio Koi Show by theirmembers.  It was decided and has now been confirmed approximately 25 to 30 members will attend the San Antonio Koi Show on Saturday, October 13th via chartered bus funded by the club.  Their last koi show was held in Houston in 2004, so they see support of the San Antonio show as well as the Dallas show as essential.  They donated money to both koi shows to help fund trophies.

September
Don Bayer, of Lone Star KC, said there is nothing to report.

August
Don Bayer, of Lone Star KC, said their July meeting was held at the home of Don Bayer, in Houston.  This was a well attended meeting.  Ray Jordan, from TKFGS KC in San Antonio, was invited to lecture and spoke on water quality.  As usual, Ray’s lecture was informative and entertaining.  Ray is a very knowledgeable koi keeper/judge who understands the intricacies of water quality and how to share that knowledge.  Thanks again to Ray and his wife Martha for making the trip over to Houston from San Antonio.  Charles Phelps, of Greater Louisville Koi Club, report a fun meeting and a gathering of friends enjoyed a B- B-Q with about 30- 40 members attending. Good food, friends and koi talk lasted the afternoon.

July
Don Bayer, of Lone Star KC, said their July meeting will be held at Don’s home.  Ray Jordan, from San Antonio, will be their speaker.  His subject will be “Tips to Improve Water Quality.”  This is a subject everyone can benefit from, no matter how long you have been dealing with ponds.  Also, Tom Tran will have about 20-25 non-gosanke tosai (one year old) koi for sale at the meeting on Sunday.  These koi currently measure from 10-12 inches and include ogon, kujaku, ai goromo, etc.  The price will be $50.00 each (koi from Japan).

April
Don Bayer, of Lone Star KC, said they held their March meeting at the home of Bruce Grunden on March 25th.  Bruce is a long time member.  The meeting was well attended and everyone enjoyed seeing Bruce’s home, koi and gardens located on the east side of Lake Houston.  One might say in the countryside.  The April meeting will be held at the home of Tom Garrison.  They are co-sponsoring, along with Dr. Nam Hoang, a Kodama Koi Sale in the Houston Area on April 7th at the country home of Dr. Hoang near Pearland, Texas.  This will be Taro Kodama’s first koi sale in Texas.

March
Don Bayer, said they started 2012 with their January meeting held at the home of Judy Christian. The meeting was held on Super Bowl Sunday, but they still had a reasonable turn out. Plans for the coming year were discussed. The February meeting was held at the home of their President, Scott Satorius and wife Linda. After the business meeting, they viewed videos of the Dianichi Ikeage taken by an LSKC club member last November. Many of their members were unaware of this process and were very impressed by the size and quality of the fish being removed from the mud ponds. It was a rare opportunity to get a glimpse inside the Dianichi operation. The March meeting will be held at the home of long time member Bruce Grunden. They will co-host the annual city-side pond tour on May 5-6 with their partners Houston Pond Society. Lastly, several members plan to attend the Southern California ZNA Koi Show in Los Angeles on March 17-18th.
