Selecting Hariwake

Judge the following three koi. Click on your choice for first place and see how you did.
A ............... B .............. C

First Place: B This orange Doitsu Hariwake is comparable to the second place Koi except that the color is uniformly clean and the second orange is even more brilliant than that on the second place fish. It looks like some one painted the orange on this Koi to make it look three dimensional. The conformation is slightly better. The pattern is less well balanced; the head of the second place fish is more attractive, and the platinum on the shoulders is a little large. But wow, what a metallic sheen!! With such quality of color, the hi on the pectoral fin is insignificant.

Second Place: AThis Hariwake has such deeep unifom metallic orange and platinum. Unfortunately, this Koi has an orange smudge on the shoulder platinum. Conformation is slightly less than the first place winner. Although this koi has a very attractive head, it is preferred over the first place fish, the smudge on the shoulder platinum and pectoral fin prevents this fish from obtaining first place.

Third Place: C This Doitsu Hariwake is a little thin on conformation. The metallic sheen is there but it is not as lustrous as the top two fish. Indeed, the platinum and orange are clean with good kiwa. Perhaps if the head had more platinum, this Koi would grab your eyes more dramatically. If this Koi maintains its quality as it grows so that the pattern stretches out, it should become a better Koi. Keep in mind that a Hariwake is essentially a metalic Kohaku.
