The distributors of the Koi Doctor and Koi 2Kichi
are asking if the AKCA Bookstore wishes to distribute those books? If was felt that we need more information. The CFO is handling the 2005 Seminar
registration; is taking time but is running much smoother than past years and
expect the final result to be much cleaner plus the money is in our bank
account. 19 vendor booths and 104
Seminar registrants have paid so far for Tulsa Seminar. All but 11 people have taken Package 1 (86
are couples). There are 41 first time
attendees. 44% are using the on-line
website with credit card. Received the
new satellite credit card machine and it is up and running in the Bookstore. Gave the fixed credit machine to Connie and
she will have it switched over to the Accounts Receivable Nova account. Doug needs a policy to require people to
submit their expense reports in a timely manner to keep the expenses in the
proper fiscal year. He will call for
end of the year expense reports to be submitted by June 30th. Motion: That the be an AKCA Financial Policy stating
that AKCA will only reimburse expenses less than 12 months old. Motion by Doug, 2nd by Burt. Approved, 1 opposed. . Motion: That end of the year expense reports be
submitted by June 30th.
Motion by Doug, 2nd by Bob.

the state. Amended tax forms for all
years will be prepared and submitted by May 30. Total amount of back taxes due will be $57,675. Doug sent the AKCA Board recommended answers
and By-Laws for the new KOI USA subsidiary to the attorney with a letter
requesting a written estimate and list of documents and actions required to
complete this task. The attorney
replied he has been remiss and busy but feels our goal of 7/1 is reasonable for
this effort and will send him detailed information next week on what is
involved and hopefully a cost estimate.
Total expenses for the month were $42,525.93. Net income was $28,841.93.

o
Written report submitted by Doug: Dr.
James Hooper, of Mendocino Coast KC, reports they will have Burt
Ballou as their speaker on May 24 to use their Speaker Grant from AKCA. Sunder Isaacs, of Middle Georgia
WGC, reports their club held a joint meeting with the Atlanta KC. The club also provided a display with a Tea
House, Japanese Garden and Koi Pond at the Cherry Blossom Festival which was a
lot of hard work but they expect several new club members from that
effort. May 14, the club will hold
their annual Pond Tour with 14 ponds.
Dot Wilbanks, of Moto Kara Koi Kai, reports they were
fortunate to have Martin de Jong, from Holland, as their speaker at their last
meeting. Martin is known for his great
koi photos. Martin uses a Cannon digital camera with a polarizing filter that
makes the fish really stand out in the photo.
Martin is a koi and photographer hobbyist. Martin shared with the club members a selection of the thousands
of koi photos he has taken over the years.
Martins photos can be viewed on the website www.koifoto.nl. Brett Rowley attended the meeting and brought some of his breeder
females to recover in show tanks following a very large breeding at his koi
farm. By the quality of the female
brood koi, Brett should have some spectacular baby koi later this year. Bill Greer, of Nashville Pond Society,
reports their club will join Green & Hagstrom Water Gardens & Koi at
their annual picnic and sale open to the public the last Sunday in April. The Water Gardens business provides the food
and the club does the cooking. In May,
the club will hold their annual plant swap and it is not only for water
plants. Last year Bill got a pecan tree
at the swap. In June, the club will
purchase 1000 pond grade, baby koi and hold their fish sale. The usual price is $5 for a 6 inch koi at
this sale. Geoffrey Huntley of Piedmont
K&WGS, reports their club koi auction is soon. Their Pond Tour will be in June and their
koi show in November. They are
considering a move in show site because the current site is power limited. The Piedmont club is still interested in
hosting the 008 AKCA Seminar.
(Note: This club and the North
Florida club are the only East Coast clubs in the competition so far for
2008) Timothy Czech, of Pioneer
Valley WG&KC, reports they held their first meeting of the year
March 13th but a snowstorm the day before kept the attendance down
to 35 people including 4 new members who were given free KOI USA magazines and
encouraged to subscribe. (Note: this is
exactly the purpose AKCA intends for the 2 free copies of the magazine sent to
each club). The meeting focused on the upcoming
koi show. The club is very close to
receiving tax exempt status. The
speaker for the meeting was Dr. Joerg Mayer DVM of Tufts University for
Veterinary Medicine who spoke on fish anatomy.
Tulsa Koi Society reports they are very busy
preparing everything for the upcoming AKCA Seminar June 23-26. Hosting an AKCA Seminar is a lot of work and
it requires the total concentration of the club. Mary Oxman, of Ventura KC, reports their April
meeting will have as a guest, Mark Davis, owner of Santa Barbara Koi, who
builds and maintains ponds in the area.
Doug tried to contact the following clubs with no information
response: Blue Water Pond Club;

100,000 people.
The club uses the festival to educate and recruit new members for the
club. Up coming events include a pond
tour in June. As always the main goal
of the club is to educate and assist hobbyists so they can fully enjoy their
ponds and water gardens. Ralph McGowan,
of the Inland Empire WG&KS, reports that Scott Taylor and his
lovely wife Jane came all the way from Georgia to Spokane, Washington to speak
to the club about Goldfish. Scott will
also be the judge of the club’s Goldfish show in August. Also, in April the club will be cleaning the
Nishinomiya Japanese Garden Pond at Manito Park in Spokane. The club was approached by Dr. Steve
Gustafson because he was concerned about the health of the koi in the 125,000
gallon pond. Steve Devaney, Margie Luce
and Claudia McGowan went to the pond and evaluated the pond and koi. It was determined that there were no major
environmental issues. It has been over
eight years since the pond was cleaned, and the club has lined up 30+
volunteers to clean the pond. In May,
the club will participate in a Garden Expo.
Greg Bates, of the Capitol Area K&WGC, reports that
the March meeting was very well attended with 67 members present. The topic for the April meeting will be “Opening

Cal President’s meeting & enjoyed it tremendously. Their next meeting will be on July 9th
at Mark & Janet Hare’s in Northern Indiana. One of their members, Dick Thomas, has been attempting to organize
a group food buy of koi food from Japan to help spread the costs out. Dan Phillips, of North Carolina
K&WGS, said that in February their members met at Cody Tseng’s
Peking Garden; had a very good turnout.
Presentation given by KHA Dan Phillips on “Factors affecting Koi Growth.” In March they took a club road trip to Lotus
Land Koi Farm to visit Brady Brandywood.
Brady spent time educating members on koi development and answered lots
of questions followed by a good number of new acquisitions being made for
member’s ponds at home. April begins
their first in a new series for 2005 of advance education classes for
interested members. The April class
will include seining mud pond, culling, proper handling of koi, scraping and scooping
for parasites on koi coming out of the mud pond, treating as required &
proper quarantine facilities setup. The
second class in May is on the various aspects of proper koi pond design, to be
held at one of their member’s homes who is preparing to put in a new pond this
summer. As part of their educational
series this year, interested NCKWS members will be selecting a tosai and
growing it out in a mud pond for the Summer that will be harvested at the
October meeting. This will give members
the opportunity to experience what it is like to grow a fish out in Japan. The fish will be fed a high quality koi food
all summer until harvest time. They
will take a picture of each koi, measure and record their information before
they go into the mud pond so they can compare the changes in October. Also in April they will be participating in
a local Home & Garden Center’s Spring Open House. The garden center is heavy into pond supplies, koi and pond
installation, a perfect venue for NCKWS to meet local hobbyist. They will have a member table with
literature for handout, giving four lectures and selling tosai for their Spring
fundraiser. May will conclude the 2nd
phase of their Tosai growout contest began in May 2004. Pictures will be submitted and koi judged
for best quality. Members will be able
to show off their koi husbandry skills and see how their abilities to select
tosai ompared with others. The 1st
phase of the contest ended last November for most growth in one growing season
(won by Lisa Warren). This contest was
designed to be fun, challenging and educational exercise in koi keeping.
