v       MINUTES:  Motion:  To approve the minutes of July 13th.  Motion by Joan, 2nd by Larry.  Approved.

v       JULY FINANCIAL STATEMENT/FINANCE COMMITTEE:

Doug reported that the State of Arizona tried to charge us $26.11 penalty for our sales tax from the Seminar bookstore because they entered the dates wrong in their system; it is now corrected.  We received a very late bill for the Seminar from Pattigrafix for materials for her workshop that Doug didn’t expect plus Robbi verbally had told him we owed SAKA $112 for Amquel and $40 refund for leaky tank to a second vendor.  The Pattigrafix expense was not budgeted but was a verbal agreement from Robbi and we had more income for the lecture than her bill.  Doug had already paid the Host clubs so he paid Pattigrafix and billed the 2 host clubs for the 20% share of the late expenses, adjusting for the $112 owed to SAKA.  He told the Host clubs to hold their payment to him until he received the $1815 from Koi Nation.  Next year Doug will close the books June 30 and any late entries will slop over into the following year.  He will not have future Seminar financials until the August AKCA Board meeting.  Motion:  To send 5 copies of the new Filter Guide to each member club.  Motion by Joan, 2nd by Burt.  Approved with 1 opposed. The medium duty shredder Doug bought is already broken due to the amount of papers he needs to shred.  Motion:  To approve the purchase of a continuous duty shredder not to exceed $350.  Motion by Burt, 2nd by Bill.  Approved.  Connie got back 38 damaged Koi ID posters she thinks were not wrapped properly from the Seminar.  Recommends that we give these posters to the local clubs to hand out to club members and write them off.  Connie would also like to have more control of the bookstore sales done by others; would like to an accounting including running the credit charges, input to her Quickbooks and checking back the residual materials against what was sold.  Discussion about the number of clubs have members subscribing to KOI USA.  Motion:  To provide a 50% discount to clubs outside the USA for membership.  Motion by Doug, 2nd by Bill.  Approved.  25 new KOI USA free issue cards are being sent to all clubs by Connie.  Only 96 of the original 2575 cards sent to clubs last year were received by PCS with 80 of those canceling, net subscribers were 16.  Doug sent thank you notes from AKCA to Asahi Koi, Sea Life Designs, JKO Inc. and Living Water Solutions for their monetary donations to the 2007 AKCA Seminar.  Also to Eastern Nishikigoi for the $300 koi donated but not to other vendor donations for raffle.    Brenda sold $575 worth of bookstore items at Indianapolis; sold 23 subscriptions.  Motion:  To accept the financial report.  Motion by Joyce, 2nd by Joan.  Approved.

v       advertising in show booklets and he has had to void three checks recently.  KOI USA donated $30,000 to AKCA.  Tom reminded the committee that we need to think about what we need to add to KOI USA to continue to make it a better magazine; have not been doing articles about beautiful high quality ponds recently.  Steve commended Cindy for making up the time lost in the Sept. issue; he is working on the January/Feb issue.  He’s been working with Joe White and feels we need to put a current events section article on our website.  He believes this along with a reference library are both avenues for future success.  Much discussion about internal communication and line of command.  It was clarified that the Editor cannot have his editorial comments edited by staff.  Should a question arise that can’t re resolved then the KOI USA President will intercede.  If there isn’t resolution, it goes before the KOI USA Board; if not resolution; then it would go to the AKCA Board for final resolution.  Motion:  That KOI USA & AKCA put their trust in the Editor (Steve Childers) by following the chain of command; 1st going to the KOI USA President, then the KOI USA Board, and finally the AKCA Board.  Motion by Burt, 2nd by Bob.  Approved.  Motion:  To approve Joe White as an officer of KOI USA.  Motion by Joan, 2nd by Joyce.  Approved.  Joe has extended the registration of our domain name for five years at a cost of $95.  The website had 5477 hits in July.  Joe has been working with Karen on a presentation of covers of back issues.  Bill reported we got our ad in Aquatic Ecosystems catalogue.  Tom was able to get our ad placed on the inside back cover.  Discussion about the need to explore less expensive teleconferencing alternatives.  Our present system is costing us between $60 and $250 per meeting to operate; had difficulties at their last meeting.  Steve Childers will be in town in two weeks and will meet with Tom & Bill to purchase the needed equipment and set up the system.  Carolyn Weiss, of Ecological Laboratories, has offered to hand out KOI USA Magazine at her booth with she attends shows.

v      MEMBERSHIP:  Doug reported that he expects a membership application from Rainbow River Koi Club in Dunnellon, FL.  There is also a club forming in the San Louis Obispo area called Central Coast Koi Club.  All of the clubs are shrinking in size except the St. Louis Water Garden & South Texas WGC.  88 clubs have paid their dues so far with 15 outstanding.  High Desert, Blue Water, and Enchanted have notified Doug of not planning to renew membership.  Linda Gardner, of Santa Fe, New Mexico, wishes to be an Associate Member of AKCA.  Per AKCA By-Laws if there is no member club within 100 miles of a person’s home, they may join AKCA as an Associate Member for $25 annually with no insurance, officer rights or voting rights.  Motion:  To accept Linda Gardner, of Santa Fe, NM, as an Associate Member entitled to join the KHA Program and be listed on the akca.org website for $25.  Motion by Doug, 2nd by Joan.  Approved.

v       JUDGING:  Bob reported that they have 21 shows during June, July, and Agusut.  Charles Phelps will be the contact person for Judges.  Contact him at: kykoi@insightbb.com.

v      AKCA WEBSITE:  Doug reported the new AKCA website went live Aug. 5th.  There is still some work to be done, but because of hackers virtually destroying the bulletin board and the events section, they have switched over to the more secure layout.  Many thanks to Dale Gingrich who installed the new shell program “Joomia” and obtained the new “header graphic”.  Dale put in many hours getting the “Bugs” out of the working model and is teaching Debby.  The bookstore section, although it has a rough look, is on line.  Debby needs the photos and description to finish

Page 3

v       it off.  Louie and Connie have been notified.  Debby has changed the akca.org domain owner to AKCA in order to separate it from KOI USA and Tom Graham.  The new domain costs $99.95 for 5 years with Doug Dahl as administrator.  Debby and Harold may decide to move the web site to a new Web Hosting Service, as many problems have arisen with the present server.

q       Shelly Klinger, of Central Illinois Water Gardeners, said their pond tour was a huge success.  It was their biggest one yet!  There was a full-page story in the area newspaper prior to the walk that described the joys of water gardening. Joan Woelfel, of St. Louis WGS, said their pond tour, Pond-O-Rama, was in June, the weekend after Father’s Day.  They had 49 ponds on tour.  So it was a wonderful time for them.  A few spotty showers didn’t dampen anyone’s enthusiasm.  One third of their hosts returned their surveys, making a few suggestions and telling them they had a wonderful time talking to their visitors.  Some had 300 visitors.  In July, they had Dr. Amy Wolff, their local koi vet talk to them about ‘Maintaining Healthy Fish’, touching on the four most common problems and how to handle them.  She was excellent!  At that same meeting, they were pleased to present the AKCA Person of the Year award to Pam & Rick Jokerst.  They were very pleased.  They also had a summer members-only tour to see four ponds in the southern section of the metropolitan area.  In August, their annual banquet will be held in the Jewel Box in Forest Park where their civic project is maintaining the lily pools in front.  They design, plant and maintain them, which are often the backdrop for bridal photos.  This year, they once again have some Victoria Water lilies planted.  Mike Miller, a local radio station’s Garden Hotline host, will be talking to them on Gateway Greening and they will present their two Service Awards to members who have done faithful and outstanding work for the Society.

q       Written report submitted by Phil Hunter:  James Slider, of the Capitol Area K&WGC, reports that the Annual Pond Tour took place on July 21st.  Although attendance was down slightly from previous years, all of the advertising space in the tour book was completely sold.  That meant that tour was economically successful before a single ticket was sold.  The August meeting will be held at the home of Troy and Wendy Pritcher.  Tentatively, someone from Stile landscaping will speak on renovating ponds and pond filter systems.  Also, on August 25th there will be a guided tour of Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids.  Further details are available at www.meijergardens.org.  Don Hellard, of the Gainesville KC, reports that not much has been happening with the club due to the hot summer.  The club is making plans to host a koi show in January 2008 at the local botanic garden.  Claudia McGowan, of the Inland Empire WG&KS, reports that the club held its 10th Annual Pond Tour in July.  This was the first ever pond tour in Northern Idaho and was a great success.  The tour consisted of 8 ponds and was followed by a BBQ for the volunteers at Jim Walsh’s home.  The August meeting was held at the home of Jackie & Cai Kabrell.  Club members helped lay the liner for their new 25’x50’x8’ pond.  A potluck BBQ followed.  Judith Minor Roberts, of the Mountaineer K&WGS, reports that the club held its 10th year celebration in July at the home of Eric and Barbara Miles.  The next club meeting will be in September and will be the election of officers for 2008 and the pond closing seminar.  Tom Tranbarger, of the Shasta K&WGC, reports that July meeting was held at the home of Don & Sylvia Johnson.  Don Johnson and Steve Echard spoke about quarantine tanks.  The club also held its Annual Pond Tour in Red Bluff for the first time.  The August meeting will be held at the home of Terry & Marilyn Swanson.  Loretta Haan will be the guest speaker and will discuss Bog Plants.  Linda Siler, of the Springfield WGS, reports that the club had a good turnout at the Annual Picnic held at Myron Royce Gardens.  Also the July meeting was held at Sandy Letterman’s home.  Jerry McBride, owner of Oakridge Koi, brought in some beautiful koi for show and tell.  One can never learn enough about these majestic fish.  The August meeting will be held at Garden Adventures, which is a new nursery.  The program will be Attracting Butterfies to Your Garden.  The Dayton Koi & Goldfish Club had no report this month.

q       Written report submitted by Carole Elliott:  Larry Hursh, of Genesse Valley Pond & KC, said that the weather was ideal for both the Niagara Frontier and Genesee Valley clubs pond tours.  They had great turnouts for the tours and picnics and in addition made new friends and contacts for future activities.  They have also been asked to participate in their August Koi & Goldfish show.  This proposal will be discussed at their meeting on August 3rd.  Their October meeting will review some of the questions and topics that seemed to evolve from the various ponds and the winter care of their fish and tropical plants.  In November they hope to have a presentation on the events and gardens from the IWGS Symposium in Thailand.  Gloria Ricigliano, of Puget Sound KC, said they had their annual koi picnic and short business meeting.  They had a small turnout but a good time anyway with the rain pouring down.  It was held at Gloria’s home under a lot of tarps.  They discussed their upcoming show which will be their 10th annual one; they all agreed that an AKCA Seminar would be nice if held in Tacoma or even Portland.  Joe Copeland, of North Texas WGS, said that they have been busy with their pond tour and a container water garden workshop.

q       Written report submitted by Spike Cover:  Ray Jordan, of Texas K&FGFS, said they had a number of their members attend the AKCA Seminar in Phoenix.  The Tacketts received the Koi Persons of the Year at the Seminar.  Phoenix was an excellent Seminar but recommend that we select a more comfortable time of the year to visit areas this warm in the summer.  Pre-Seminar tours and pond tour was just too uncomfortable

q       and even dangerous healthwise.  July meeting was a microscope lab to practice looking for parasites.  Plans are well underway for their 15th Annual show Oct. 13-14 in San Antonio.  Detail can be found on their website at www.texaskoi,.com.   Tamara Skaggs, of Northern Midwest ZNA KC, reported they had a successful koi show that happened on June30-July 1.  This show moved from Chicago and a date of Sept. to Indianapolis, end of June.  This proved to be a good move as the show was twice as big as it was in Chicago.  An estimated 450 people came through the doors; they had 21 vendors with 28 spaces, and 81 fish.  Grand Champion A went to Sue & Dick Emerick, Reserve Grand Champion went to Mike & Michelle Pfeffer, and Grand Champion B went to Bay & Bryan Bateman.  Thank you to all the vendors and exhibitors and the show Committee for a great show.  Special thanks would go first to their judges, Grant & Penny Patton for Koi & Art Lembke for Goldfish; also to those that stayed and helped to tear down and clean up.

q       Written report submitted by Harlan Glenn:  Chuck Poppe, of ZNA Potomac, reported that it looks like the Sept, 8-9th koi show will be a good one.  Have 30 tanks reserved; this is more than they have ever had before.

q       Written report submitted by Bill Thompson:  Kay Rice, of Koi Club of Middle Tennessee, reports that their club is interested in joining with the East Tennessee Koi Club to host a future AKCA Seminar.  KCMT has had a very active summer with road trips to Koi Village and Hammock Koi Farm, and meetings at member’s homes.

q       Written report submitted by Joyce Glenn:  Dave Peebler, of Koi Club of Kansas,  reported that he is all moved in; has been a major move.  Tuesday they had workers from Kansas City and the excavator driver flipped the machine.  It took a crane and a big caterpillar to get it out.  Rod MacNeil, of the Charleston Showa KC, said there is a lot of heat.  To keep the fish cool they have to do water changes.  Michael Anderson, of Atlanta KC, reported that in the last month they added eight new members.  That brings them up to 140 plus nine sponsors.  They are in the final planning for their annual show.  They will have separate competitions for nishikigoi, longfins and goldfish.  That will be Sept. 14-16.  To minimize the time and effort for show setup and teardown, AKC has sold off the soft side tanks and purchased 40 new hard side tanks.  In the current KOI USA issue, AKC members had two articles.  One was on AKC’s Ikeage and the other was DIY bottom drains..  Bob Waag, of Florida West Coast, reported everyone enjoyed a trip to McKee Gardens.  Built in the early 1900s it is something that is really lovely.  A Victoria lotus was growing in the pond and had a tea set on it.  They passed out bookstore order forms and discussed insurance.  This fall Paula Biles will be giving a program on her trip to Thailand.  Bonnie Nakahara, of Hawaii Goldfish & Carp, said the club will have a display booth for the Okinawa Festival on Labor Day weekend which is sponsored by Okinawa Club.  This is a big cultural event.  Attendance is always high.  Joyce Tsuji, of Washington K&WGS, said that at the March general meeting they featured a presentation on construction of a 18,000 gallon greenhouse pond by member Chris Charbonneau.  They are doing the second part of their pond tour to CleElum on Aug. 11 to see this greenhouse.  There was a presentation by member Nancy Moore on the dangers of commercially available salt which may contain substances such as potassium in amounts that would be toxic to your koi even though such substances are not listed on the bag.  Nancy was successful in getting Aquatic Ecosystem to test their calcium chloride.  They found potassium in the product and it has since been removed and a new product put on the shelves.  It will be potassium free.  Joyce tried but was unable to reach the Tampa Bay club.
