    The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Larry Leverett. There are 100 member clubs.

    MINUTES

    Motion: To accept the minutes of January 12, 2000 with the following correction: under Financial report... should read Nov. & Dec. Motion by Burt, 2nd by Joan. Approved

    JANUARY FINANCIAL STATEMENT

    : Carl handed out the combined balance sheets for January. He stated that 21 people have registered at the hotel; 114 registered for the Houston Seminar. AKCA had a net income, for the month of January, of $1,387. The Seminar, for the month of January, had a minus $902.61; bills are being paid. He also stated that we are reordering Grant Fujita's Koi book at a cost of $17.50 per copy ordering 500 copies. Motion: To accept the Financial report as presented. Motion by Carole, 2nd by Joan. Approved

    COMMITTEE REPORTS

    KOI USA: Joyce stated that she gets to judge magazines this month for the "Maggie Awards." Folio West is coming up; Joyce would like to go again this year at a cost of $695. Motion: To send Joyce and Tom Graham to Folio West. Motion by Bob, 2nd by Burt. Approved. She stated that Sandy Files is no longer working with us

    SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE No report

    MEMBERSHIP: No report.

    JUDGING: Bob stated that the program for Thursday is looking good. There will be an air conditioned bus ride to Brett Rawley's Koi Farm for a live large koi judging; from there they will meet up with the rest of the Seminar participants for dinner. They will have Mr. Sakai, a famous koi breeder who has established his own Kohaku blood line. Also, on Friday & Saturday, the judges will be available for the public for 5 1/2 hours. Dr. Galen Hansen, Dr. Gene Ewy, and Bob Finnegan are working hard to make this a success. It also looks like the koi shows in the USA this year are off to a good start. He and Joan won 1st place in the All?Japan Show, Size 6 bu (a sanke).

    SPEAKERS BUREAU: No report.

    SPEAKERS GRANT: Burt stated that he had a call from the Oklahoma club to explain how the grant works, otherwise, no report.

    AKCA GUIDES: We have the revised Health guides will send them out once we get the club rosters (including members addresses). It was recommended that we think about including a supplement regarding anesthesia of koi.

    NOMINATING COMMITTEE: Lisa Barnett presented the proposed slate of officers for 2001-2002:

    Ballots will be sent out with the mailing of the minutes; please ask clubs to vote (they can exercise their option of writing in a name) and submit no later than May 1st.

    SEMINAR REPORTS:

    2001 SEMINAR: Mark stated that he just got back from Houston; said it is the best hotel we've ever had for a Seminar. He asked that the AKCA board act as greeters for the 1st timers; introducing them to others. There are a few obstacles ? food ? there has been a change in the food management. On Friday there will be a special barbecue. 114 room nights have been sold. There will be a $50 cut per person for the total package if you get your reservation in by April 1st. They have some wonderful raffle items including several 3?day trips, etc. Beth is in charge of marketing; has spent money on radio advertising. Southwest Air will accept fish as freight. They are also giving a booth to local koi clubs for arts & crafts. Cost of taping the Seminar was discussed.

    2002 SEMINAR: Mark stated that they are working on a logo for the KOI USA. Beth and a group from Texas will meet with them.

    2003 SEMINARS: No report; need to start identifying hotels.

    REPRESENTATIVE CONTACTS:

    Written report submitted by Burt: Susanna Trittschuh, of Florida East Co said that they had a speaker on gold fish as well as what to look for when purchasing a koi; 3rd part was koi variety with description. Arthur Manaker, of Nature's Coast K&WGC, said that they had a meeting for AFKAPS show recently. They are planning some joint trips down south to some gardens with the Jacksonville club; had 20?25 members at the last meeting; haven't planned any other activities. They may plan a small koi show at a local park. Chris Schroettinger, of Central Florida, said that they are getting ready for AFKAPS; had a meeting at the Water World on how to pick tategoi. Also planning a pond tour; have schedule for the year done. Jackie Welch, of Oklahoma KC, said that they will do a mini judging exercise run by Chuck Downs. They are going to put their newsletter on e?mail. They have a committee looking at their by?laws, Ray Abel is coming out April 20th to do a program and bring some koi. Phred Jackson, of San Francisco Bay Are KC, said that they are having a show on March 23?25; pond tour will be on June 2nd He has worked on a couple of design ideas for the 2002 Seminar. He thinks that they have a new rep, Brenda Bonner (650) 359?1971. Art Lembke, of Mid?Atlantic KC, said that everything is quiet on the East Coast. The Executive Planning meeting is Feb. 180' to plan the upcoming year. Carl Fridenstine, of Santa Clara Valley said that the by?laws will be voted on, hopefully, this month. Their club is going to help the San Francisco club put on their koi show at the Flower Show. they are having a vote on the new by?laws. Norbun Watson, of Warner Robins KC, said that all is quiet; sent a list of club officers. They are not getting the two (2) KOI USA magazines for the last three (3) issues. Should go to: 711 Bernard Dr., Warner Robins, GA 31093. He is going to give a subscription to his university as well as the copies of the filter and pond guides. They had a speaker on landscaping at their last meeting; 2 speakers also spoke on pond construction with rocks on the bottom. There will be a pond tour in May; no set date as yet. Debby Tibbetts, of Southern Arizona KC, said that elections are coming up; 2 pond tours, day and night, will be in May. Three members are going to the San Diego show. Peter Enfield, of Pacific Wonderland, said that they didn't have a meeting this month,

    Written report submitted by Carole Elliott: Dorothy Helms, of Eastern Iowa Pond Soc., said that they have lots of snow; waiting for spring. Their first pond meeting will be Feb. 17 th ; will plan for the year as well as have a pot luck. She will check into getting the club roster sent in. Linda Reed, of Genesee Valley Pond, said that she hasn't been able to attend meeting the past several months; will check with the President about getting a new rep. Called Larry Nau, the alt. rep. who said to send him the minutes, etc. until they decide who the club rep will be. Reminded him to send in club roster. Dave Rattray, of Golden Horseshoe K&PC of Ontario said that they haven't had meetings recently; first will be April Is. Ronald Bergman, of Miami Valley WGS, said that they had their Xmas party in December with 80 in attendance; held at an old restored mansion. In January, 60 people attended to hear a speaker, from a nursery, speak about unusual perennials that worked well around water. They have 130 family members. Jan Jordan, of Mid?Columbia KC said that they had a big turnout at their last meeting; a dealer (Larry Smith from Shibui Koi) spoke about opening up the pond in spring. Jan is being paid by the community school to teach 4 classes on building ponds, maintenance, etc.; includes a field trip. She, in turn, is donating her fee to the club. They have 20 people in the class and because of demand, has been asked to teach another in the spring. She doesn't know if she'll have time for that one. They are holding a fish health class in April, both beginning and advanced. They have at least 60 family members. Florida K&WGS will discuss library usage, AFKAPS and club scrapbook at their next meeting. The All Florida Koi & Pond Show will be held March 16?18 at the Ramada Conference Center in Orlando. They had a great Xmas party at the Elmore Evans home; they had election of officers; door prizes and gift exchange. Nathan Stover, of Valley of the Sun, said that they would like more info about the KHT training. Is there a way I could obtain some more information before he passes the idea on to the club? (Don't any right now .... hopefully, we will have some next month), He wanted to make sure that KOI USA is listing him (602) 938?9778..as the right contact person. Reminded him about sending in club roster with addresses.

    Written Report submitted by Larry Kim Larsen, of Olympic Koi Club, is the newly elected newsletter editor and AKCA rep. Their first meeting will be in March. Judy Ensley, of Ohio Koi Club, says its cold there; fish are sleeping and members dreaming of spring. Donna Woods, of Gulf Coast Koi Society said that they had election's for officers; Larry Borg is their new secretary. Darlene Jennings, of Mid?Michigan P&WGC, said that their first meeting will be held on Feb. 7th. They have nominations for officers with voting at the March meeting. Barry Berger, of Greater Boston Koi Keepers, said he would be sending in his roster of members to AKCA.

    Written Report submitted by Mark: Gary Chin, of Camelli is the new club president and rep; they thanked their outgoing president, Carolyn Van Hoecke, and the board for their efforts. They developed their annual themes based on seasons and supportive animal husbandry. They plan to help people to start new ponds, get pond sitters and help new members. Lone Star, Texas K&FGF North Texas all met at Beth Grunden's to discuss the Seminar plans. They have developed a team of over 40 active members who have taken on various jobs. Ray has pretty much gotten the speakers; Kenny Wong is in charge of registration and is already receiving many applications ? , and Kathryn Barton is leadings strong move to get the vendors registered Tames Hooper, of Mendocino, said they have several new members. They are planning another pond tour for July. Have moved club meetings to a Sat afternoon to encourage new membership. Galen Hanson is planning to visit Mendocino for a talk to the club.

    Written report submitted by Joyce: John Olsen, of Tampa Bay Club, reported all is well. Fred McCorkle is back as club rep to AKCA due to Jerome Yates' illness. Fred has been handing out the filter guides to Florida West Coast members and he's heard a lot of good comments on the quality of the new book. Their next meeting is about filters; timing was great. Meanwhile, we hope Jerome is recovered. Vergil Hettick reports ZNA So Cal is excited about their upcoming show on March 16th.

    Written report submitted by Bob: Sally Thomas, of West Tennessee, said that their club is talking about building a koi pond for an elementary school. Irene Watenthuph, of Rocky Mountain Koi said that they had their I st meeting of the year in January; 60 people attended. Their koi show will be Sept. 1?3; Labor Day. There will be a bead filter for each tank. Chuck Poppe, of ZNA Potomac, said that everything is OK. So Cal KC had a meeting on February 9th at Laguna Koi Ponds; Nigata Sale and lecture; elections will be held in March. Lorraine Gregson, of Forest Ci Pond Club, said that everything is OK. Charles Phelps, of Greater Louisville, said that everything is OK; will have a koi show Memorial weekend. Dr. Ken Lau, of Indiana Koi, said that everything is OK. Tom Tower, of Niagara K&PS, said that everything is OK. Mona Coleman, of Northern Nevada, said that they are having a Seminar in March. Dr. Johnson will be speaking. They meet the 3rd Monday of each month. Pat Christensen, of Northwest K&GF, said that everything is OK. Laura Lea Evans, of Sierra KC, said that everything is OK; lots of snow.

    Written report submitted by Kelly: John Seifert, of the Wand Empire WG&KS1 reported that they held their first ever koi show on July 15th & 16th 2000. Wyvern Cellars, located just west of Spokane, Wash., graciously provided their beautiful grounds for the show. Despite a few minor glitches, the show went great! The Finnegans were great as their judges. They a enjoyed Bob's teachings. The show was an English style show with fish limited to 20 inches. They used twelve tanks for the 67 fish entered. Their next show will be Sept. 1501 & 16th 2001 at Wyvern Cellars, Spokane, Wash. Scott Kendall, of Greater Dayton KC, said that their first meeting of the year will be on Feb. 4th; will have elections and set the agenda for 200 1. The club meets the I" Thursday of the month. Planning a container water garden contest, annual pond tour, plant & fish swap, picnics and club members only imni pond tour. Nick Little, of Capital Area K&WGC, said the club enjoyed a delayed (weather) holiday social and met in January to discuss water quality. They stock the club library and purchase some emergency pond supplies to have available for members. The club is also considering how it can help community pond projects. Planning is under way for their second pond tour (June 30th Club membership continues to grow and the water garden/pond seminar season is beginning. Don Hellard, of Gainesville K&GWGC, said that the "Pondhoppers" are gearing up for another exciting year starting with the 4th Annual All Florida Koi & Pond Show in Orlando on March 16?18, 200 1. This will be followed closely by their participation in the annual Kanapaha Botanical Gardens Springs Garden Show. This facility operates a huge waterfall and canal/koi pond system fed by treated wastewater. A separate lake system contains one of the few large victoria water lily displays. The show draws 20,000 people and is a wonderful recruiting and education opportunity for the club. Gil Orris, of Michigan K&PC, said that they are having their next meeting on Feb. 13th to finish the calendar for the year. Alice Kitselman?Ames, of Santa Fe Pond Socie , said that they have had their election. The club membership includes several out of town families. Alice will be attending the Houston Seminar in Texas.

  • AKCA ByLaws: Burt handed out a copy of the information sheet; it was critiqued by those present. This will be sent out with the ballot amending the bylaws for the annual dues increase. Motion To change Article 3, Section 4: Membership Dues from $50.00 per year to $100.00 per year. Associate membership dues from $12.50 per year to $25.00 per year, and Professional membership dues from $100.00 per year to $240.00 per year (this not to include insurance); and the reinstatement fee of $25.00 per year to $50.00 per year.
