MINUTES:
Motion: To approve the minutes of June 10th with the following
corrections: under proxy calls should read AKCA bylaws; under Burt’s report
Florida East Cost was contacted. . Motion by Doug, 2nd by Joan. Approved.
JUNE FINANCIAL STATEMENT/FINANCE COMMITTEE:
Doug reported that part of
his job as CFO is to identify unusual bills and to get Board approval before
paying those bills. Another
responsibility to to remind Joan, Ed and Ray to notify the AKCA Board of an
expenditure approved by one of them between Board meetings. He apologized to the Board and to Ed for not
doing so with the KOI USA website improvement invoices. He has paid 3 invoices for $250, $250 and
$100 to Tom Graham for minor improvements to the KOI USA website. Ray Jordan ordered 100 “diamond level $250
or over donation” pins for the KHV Project for $337 which he has paid. He has held up plans for a new
brochure. 2005 Tulsa Seminar attendance
was 138 people and 37 vendor booths. He
is still working on the profit analysis but expects it to be a slim net profit. The hotel forgave us $4295 in attrition
penalties for not making our Guarantees in lieu of us dropping the demand for
the 7 room nights earned. Doug is
waiting for money or bills from Barbara Collier, a bus company, the video
conference folks and the hotel for the package handling charges. It was good for the Host club that we took
the raffle/auction out of the Seminar so they will at least get 40% of that
money (about $1300). Motion: That AKCA split the raffle/auction 50/40/10
for the KHV Project/Host club/AKCA for the 2006 Seminar separate from the
Seminar also. Motion by Doug, 2nd
by Joan. Tabled Our attorney notified Doug by phone that KOI
USA Inc. is incorporated as of 7/1 because he had it walked thru the state
approvals. He has papers that need to
be signed for KOI USA logo copyright for AKCA and leasing rights to KOI USA
Inc. Joan, Carole and Doug need to sign
this document. He may bring the
document to the AKCA Board meeting.
Doug has the IRS EIN number for KOI USA Inc. He is working on the amounts to go to KOI USA Inc. Union bank
account. KOI USA Inc. is in place. Doug will move $87,966.67 subscription
liability as of 6/30/05 from the AKCA financial account to the KOI USA Inc.
financial account next week. Doug will
try to get Union bank to change over the bank account next week. Doug didn’t receive info for the AKCA investment
fund as of this meeting. Doug has also
updated the AKCA calendar with Seminar due dates and he suggest that this page
be included in future finance reports to go over in the AKCA Board meeting. This is in addition to Carole continuing to
place the bold items in the minutes for next months meeting. Only Mendocino and Cascade clubs have
submitted Speaker Grant expenses for payment so far. Doug sent emails to the other 4 clubs telling them to submit
their expenses. The Water Garden Club
of So. Texas and Prairieland Koi & Pond Club both emailed Doug they did not
use the grant and did not understand the rules (he made it clear to them). In the future, AKCA should email the club
AKCA Dir/Rep of the winning clubs to make sure the letter of award arrived. The Franchise Tax Board sent a letter
admitting their error in sending back our $10,000 and asking us to pay the
$7,677 tax due on our forms. Doug sent the Franchise Tax Board the $7,677. He also went ahead and sent in the IRS back
tax forms and payments for the last 5 years since this issue was cleared. The IRS corrected our 2003 taxes for another
$466 due and charged us $607 for not submitting estimated taxes. Both have been paid. Tom Graham and Connie Freihoff are now
contractors for KOI USA Inc. and not AKCA.
Doug gave them each a cover letter in early June stating their contract
with AKCA was coming to an end and attached a new contract for KOI USA
Inc. Neither delivered a signed
contract at the July KOI USA meeting as requested. Motion: The AKCA Board to authorize Doug to send an
official 60 day termination letter to Tom and Connie for their AKCA
contracts. This will allow them 60 days
to negotiate and sign the new contract with KOI USA Inc. Motion by Doug, 2nd by Joan. Approved. Doug stated that he will be physically moving on
August 22nd. Discussion followed on whether to train a
replacement or options of Doug staying on as well as
logistics. It was decided that Doug could do any
AKCA/KOI USA business while living near Fresno; will have conference calls
during Board meetings. Motion: To purchase a speaker phone. Motion by Joan, 2nd
by Burt. Approved. Doug is closing out the fiscal years books.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:
SCIENTIFIC: Spike reported that he failed to turn in approx. $5,000 towards expenses for the past several years, however, he had no documentation on specific expenses. He was asked to check with his credit card companies for copies of any past expenses with Doug checking to make sure it hadn’t been paid in the past. Board policy has been not to pay expenses not turned in within one year, thus, will need Board approval once any expenses can be verified. Motion: To make an exception to the one year expense rule and have Spike and Doug reconstruct past expenses. Motion by Burt, 2nd by Harlan. Approved. Spike went over his monthly report. Discussion about dealer’s participating in the KHA program; it was stated that they could become a professional member of AKCA (at $240); it felt that this was acceptable. Spike submitted his yearly budget of $15,825. Motion: To accept Spike’s budget for the KHA program. Motion by Doug, 2nd by Joyce. Approved.
KHV Project: Doug reported that Ray sent an email stating that he needs recommendations from the Scientific Committee on how best to spend the incoming donations. We have received $42,500+ in donations with AKCA matching those funds. Jim Reilly has shut down the bank account in New Jersey and sent the funds to Ray Jordan. They will also get $2,000 from the proceeds of the auction from the Tulsa AKCA Seminar.
PUBLICATION: Joyce read Ed’s report; KOI USA, Inc. a for profit corporation, is
official as of July 1, 2005. Moved and
approved that Doug Dahl continue as CFO for KOI USA, Inc. Congratulations were offered to the KOI USA
staff on the latest issue of KOI USA; it has a huge “wow” factor. Discussions were held on a new article
series for the magazine, etc. Also, belatedly
reported on paying Tom for the past 3 months for updating the KOI USA website.
MEMBERSHIP: Doug stated that there are
104 clubs. He has received dues from 79
clubs; 25 are still due. He also
received a membership application from Salt Lake City Koi Club. The AKCA Dir/Rep for this club told Doug she
bought out the KOI USA magazines from the PetSmart display and gave a copy to
each club member. Their club members
will be strongly encouraged to subscribe to KOI USA and support AKCA projects
and events. Motion: To approve Salt Lake City Koi Club as an
AKCA member club. Motion by Doug, 2nd
by Burt. Approved. Doug also has a VISA card charge for the
Great Smoky Mountains Koi Club to join AKCA; no paperwork at this time. Motion: To approve the Great Smoky Mountains Koi
Club as an AKCA member club. Motion by

$200. Motion by Doug, 2nd by
Larry. Approved.

changes.
SEMINAR REPORTS:
2005 TULSA SEMINAR: Doug went over most of the
report during his financial report. Ed
sent a report expressing his thanks and congratulations to the wonderful team
of exceptional people from the Tulsa Koi Society who worked so hard and so
successfully to give us a really great Seminar. Thanks to Allen Hill for coming up with the idea of the
fascinating teleconference with Japan, putting it all together, and making it
happen like it was just another phone call to a neighbor across the
street. Thanks to Allen & Marsha
Hill for arranging for the great Indian dancers and helping them put on a great
show. Thanks to Debby Vanhook for all
the great work she did getting vendors to attend the Seminar. Thanks also to Dr. Mark Thng for all the
great work he did in getting donations of merchandise and prizes for the raffle
and auction. Thanks to Norma Qualls for
all her work in putting together the Seminar notebooks and for handling the
photography for the Seminar. Many
thanks to Larry Hight for his work with fish preparation and
Page 3
selection
for the judges events. Thanks also to
Doug Dahl, for all of his work handling the registration, and for all of his
help and advice to all ofus whenever it was needed. Huge thanks for the quiet man behind the scenes, John Collier,
who was everywhere, quietly taking care of business without making a fuss. And last, but not least, thanks to that
pillar of serenity, Barbara Collier, who orchestrated this huge task and made
it all come together smoothly and apparently, effortlessly.
2006 NIAGARA SEMINAR: Doug will
be unable to attend the 2006 Seminar, thus, he has asked Larry to appoint Burt
Ballou as the AKCA Chair for 2006; Larry did.
2007 Seminar: Joan reported that Tom Ayers
wants Joan & Bob to discuss slogans with him.
2008 Seminar: Jacksonville, Fla. Will get
contract proposals from the local hotels that can meet our requirements.
Future Seminars: Discussion about location of
future Seminars as well as when to hold them. It was decided to do a phone survey during the rep calls to see if
people want to continue with holding Seminars the last weekend in June or
switch to the last weekend in September.
REPRESENTATIVE
CONTACTS:
Written report submitted by
Doug: Judy Schwartz, of Austin Pond Society
in Texas, reports it was good to finally meet Doug Dahl in person at the AKCA
Seminar in Tulsa. The topic for this
months meeting is using rain water for your pond. On June 25th there was a 3 pond tour for members only
followed by a wine and cheese party.
Their annual Pond tour for the public will be July 16/17. Proceeds from the Pond Tour will benefit the
Marbridge Foundation which helps adults with developmental disabilities. Judy was sorry she missed the video
conference with Japan and Joel Burkhard at the Tulsa Seminar. Bob Slack, of Blue Water Pond Club
in Ontario, Canada, reports their club Executive Committee met during February
and March but no club meetings until April 29.
Lorraine Gregson spoke about the different types of koi and how they
evolved. Lorraine has many years
breeding koi. There was a discussion
about the advantages or disadvantages of bringing koi indoors for the
winter. There were advocates for both
approaches. Janet Vukovich, of Central
Calif. KC, reports it will be great to have Doug Dahl join their club
after his move from Southern California.
The club will give a thank you dinner on July 9 to all members for
supporting the club. Becky Maier, of Enchanted
Koi & WGC, reports their club will send Doug Dahl a club
roster. The Club Picnic is planned for
July 30. A wet lab is planned for the
afternoon including a session to learn how to use a microscope. The club Pond Tour is planned for Aug. 13
from 1-5 pm. The local Preservation
Society will help to promote the Pond Tour along with the local newspaper who
will have pond photos and articles on the ponds on the Pond Tour. Sue Boydstun, of Idaho WGS,
reports the club kicked off the season with a banquet in April. Dave Salmon, of Mazuri Koi foods, spoke on
koi nutrition. The speaker for the club
May meeting was Tony Daletski from Pacific Water Gardens and the topic was
water plants. Tony brought a plant for
all attending to take home. Todd Grimm,
from Wildlife Services, spoke at the June meeting on legal forms of predator
control for koi ponds. Bob Sievert, of Las
Vegas Koi Club, reports they had a great turnout for their June
meeting. The Pond Tour in May was a
success and they have already started planning next year’s Pond Tour. Janon Alegre and Kent Wallace gave a report
about the AKCA Seminar in Tulsa. A
discussion followed about the club sponsoring an AKCA Seminar in the future,
maybe in 2009 when the
Seminar comes back to the West Coast. So all you AKCA clubs, talk up Las Vegas for
2009 with your AKCA Board contact. AKCA
will make the selection for 2009 in June, 2006. So far, the choice is between San Diego and Las Vegas for
2009. Charlene Jandick, of Lone
Star ZNA KC, reports the club held a very successful Pond Tour on July
1 and raised $2900. New officers were
selected and voted in at the June meeting with Richard
Black their President. The club congratulated club member Mike Nall for becoming KHA graduate. The next meeting will have speaker Nelson Herwig who retired from
the Aquatic Dept. at the Houston Zoo.
He will speak on Koi Health. The
guest speaker for the Aug. 21 meeting will be Bret Rowley speaking about koi
breeding and on koi in general. Dr.
James Hooper, of Mendocino Coast Koi Club, reports their club
members just thought it would be too hot in Tulsa to attend the AKCA
Seminar. That is the reason he feels
the Seminar was not well attended. He
suggests that AKCA move future Seminars to late September. He feels it will be easier for dealers to
attend the trade show and more comfortable temperature for not only people but
for koi and koi ponds on the Pond Tour.
Breeding will be over, ponds usually clear up in early fall and algae
disappears. Late June is also too late
to get new ponders interested in
building a pond. The cost of hotels also drops off in late
September and there is less competition from other
conventions than in the
summer. He realizes late June is good
for teachers but he thinks the heat keeps more people away from the Seminar
than we make up with teachers. Pam Francis,
of Michigan Koi & Pond Club-SE, reports their club members
are looking forward to the 2006 AKCA Seminar in Buffalo, NY. The club meeting in June was their annual
fish auction and ice cream social. This
year they had fewer fish of higher quality.
Their next event will be the
Page 4
annual Pond Tour July 16 with
10 ponds. The tour will be followed by
an educational meeting the following week discussing Pond Design. Also on August 20 there will be a members
only progressive dinner and mini-pond tour.
On September 17, club members will tour a local nature center. Sunder Isaac, of Middle Georgia WGC,
reports they had 31 members at the May meeting at China Palace. They plan 11 ponds on their upcoming Pond
Tour. Future club meetings will be held
at members homes. The club is
discussing the possibility of building a pond at a public site in the future
like a school. There will be at least 4
people from this club attending the 2006 AKC Seminar in Buffalo, NY. Dot Wilbanks, of Moto Kara Koi Kai,
reports they had to postpone their club trip back stage at the Houston Aquarium
from June to July. This club has
requested AKCA to increase the maximum number of words in reports sent to
Brenda Atwell from 150 words to 200 words.
Bill Greer, of Nashville Pond Society, reports he understands
the rules of the AKCA Speaker Grant the club won for this year. In June, the club held 2 meetings. The first was a trip to a koi wholesaler
about an hour away in Kentucky for the annual fish sale. The second meeting was the club annual plant
swap held at a park. Both of these
meetings usually draw crowds of 100-200 people. In July, the club will hold their annual picnic at TAH
Landscaping. In August, the club will
hold its first Parade of Ponds Evening Edition with 4 ponds that have stunning
lighting. This will be a members only
tour. This will not replace the Pond
Tour for the public in September which usually draws 500-700 attendees. Melinda Christopher, of Olympic
K,G&WGC, reports the club is gearing up for their koi appreciation
day and also their upcoming Pond Tour with 7 ponds. Dorothy Connors, of
Rhode Island &
Massachusetts KC, reports their club is a tad late getting started this
year. Temperatures have been
brutal. John Collier, of Tulsa
Koi Society, reports it is good the Seminar is over. It was a lot of work but the club is happy
with the way the Seminar was run and organized. The video conference with Japan and assistance of Joel Burkard
was the focal point of the Seminar. The
entertainment was also great and the Trade Show well organized even if the
crowds were small. The raffle/auction
brought in around $4000, half of which will go to the KHV Project. David Yee, of Valley of the Sun KC,
reports their club is not meeting until September due to the heat. Club members are already planning the 2007
AKCA Seminar and have asked AKCA for help developing a good technical program
with GOOD speakers and they need ideas for topics. Mary Oxman, of Ventura KC, reports the club July
meeting will be a potluck. The hosts
for their June meeting displayed an ideal quarantine tank and system to fellow
club members. Owners of the Big Fish,
in Chatsworth, came to the June meeting with nets and algae control products
for club members to purchase. The
owners spoke about analyzing water problems and suggesting treatments. This vendor gives club members a 10%
discount. Doug tried to contact the
following clubs with no information response:
Austin Koi & Goldfish
Club; Dai Ichi KC; First Coast K&WGC; Mid
Atlantic Koi Club; Piedmont K&WGS; and Pioneer
Valley WG&KC.

Next meeting will have Beth Grunden as a speaker on koi health; meeting
will be at a member’s ranch where they raise llamas. Debby Young, of Southern Arizona KC, said their
next meeting is an annual picnic @ Mountain View Koi as they are members of the
club; all budgets were turned in for all future events. John Case, of San Francisco Bay KC,
said they had their pond tour with 6 ponds; was a success. Still working on long term goals for the
show; no June meeting because of the pond tour. Linda Montgomery, of Cascade K&GFS, said the
club is winding down from the PNKCA Seminar; the last meeting was cancelled
after the PNKCA Seminar. Next meeting
will be a round table about the issues with their ponds & koi. ZNAOC held their annual BBQ at
Mark & Charlene Whalen’s; a short business meeting to vote on amending AKCA’s
bylaws; Dottie Baker was their Koi Person of the Year nominee. John Hathaway, of Pacific Wonderland,

report submitted by Carole: Jerry Woodbury, of Miami Valley WGS, said they are
gearing up for their annual pond tour for July 30/31st. They will be showing off 18 member

with the Cincinnati Water Garden Club.
In August they will visit their pond tour. They are currently taking nominations for any new officers. Jackie Allsup, of Eastern Iowa
Pond Society, said they are meeting to do their annual pre-pond
tour “mini tour”. Their club pond tour
is Sunday, July 10th; Herman & Rosie Michel are this year’s
chairmen and are doing a great job organizing the tour. At their last meeting they learned how to
make cement castings of large leaves to be used as bird baths or foot paths
depending on the design. The weather
has been great and the ponds are looking wonderful! Linda Love, of North Texas WGS, reports that not
much is happening since the 2 day pond tour on the 19th & 20th
of June. All of the ponds (53) were
very nice. On the 16th
through the 17th of July, some of their club members are
participating in the 4th Annual TAPS Conference in Amarillo,
TX. This month’s NTWGS pond meeting
program will be given by Steve Love on water quality needed for fish. Mike Przewoznik, of High Desert
Koi Fanciers, said they are having pond tours for the rest of the
summer; they are planning a 200 koi auction for August. Bryan Bateman, of Midwest Pond &
Koi Society, said their tosai auction was
great; they auctioned off
75 baby koi. Of these, 30 were long fin
koi for which they will be giving special prizes if they are shown at their
August show. This is to encourage more
folks to show their koi. Their July
pond tour has been expanded to two consecutive weekends, with 75 ponds on the
tour this year. It has become one of
the premier garden and pond walk events in the Chicago area. They are gearing up for their 13th
annual koi and goldfish show on Aug. 27/28th. They’re looking forward to their new air
conditioned arena at the Darien Sportplex.
Richard Adema, of Canada KC of British Columbia, said the
club has few activities going on for the summer. For July members will be going over to Vancouver Island for a
pond tour with the Nanaimo Koi Club to view some of the ponds mid island; this
will be the 1st
time club members have visited this club.
Usually they visit the Dai-Ichi Koi & Watergarden Society in
Victoria. The other activity will be spending
the day helping a club member repair and rebuild her waterfall which has sprung
a couple of leaks over the years. Also,
signed up club members are participating in an internal koi competition
in which club executive
arranged to have a dealer member supply them with higher quality and grade of
showa’s at a discounted price. Over the
next year members will grow these showa’s and next year will compare them to
see how the koi have progressed. August
will be the club’s annual barbeque with a mini pond tour beforehand. Also, the club will be hosting a PNKCA
Convention in 2007 and should be in the same hotel location as the one in
1999. Jan Jordan, of Mid-Columbia
KC, said that their business meeting was held at Larry Gillespie’s;
topics currently under discussion are the pond tour on Sept. 10th
and hosting the PNKCA Convention next year.
Their potluck/recreation meeting was held at Ron & Gloria Boedeker’s
for July; about 25-30 members turned out; had lots of raffle prizes from
members were donated, including a coupon for any water lily from their newest
pond store, Water Gardens West, located in W. Richland. Larry Hursh, of Genesse Valley Pond
& Koi Club, said their club is doing well though slightly smaller
than last year. One of their members
shared his koi and goldfish experiences at a pond day sponsored by a local
garden center. They have also been
assisting a volunteer at one of their parks to evaluate problems with a
decorative pond and waterfall to reduce its maintenance requirements. Their meeting topic for July was the bog
gravel filter system. They will again
have representatives participating in the Niagara Frontier Koi & Pond
Club tour on July 23rd; they will
Page
6
reciprocate and have some
of their members join their tour on July 30th. They have agreed to help them at the AKCA
2006 Seminar. They will not hold a
regular meeting in August but will offer an off-site trip. They will be visiting a fish
farm/breeder. In September, they hope
to discuss the problem of invasive species and how to select natural materials
as possible alternatives. The October
meeting will be a round table discussion on “what worked for you.” It will be a review of past and present
experiences- their success or failure and recommendations for additional experiments
and trials for next year. Roselyn
McVicker, of K&WGS of Central New York, said their June
meeting they discussed going on a road trip to Koi by Karin in Allentown, Pa
and the Kiagara Koi Club Pond Tour near Rochester, NY. They also invited their sponsor, Ballantyne
Gardens to give a talk on plants for in and around the pond. They gave some very good advice on the
subject. Carole tried but was unable
to reach: Bakersfield K&WGS;
Central Alabama K&WGS; Niagara Frontier K&PC;
Puget Sound KC; South Carolina K&WGS;
Southwest
K&PA; and WGC of South Texas.
Written
report submitted by Larry: Darlene Jennings, of Mid-Michigan Pond
& Water Garden Club, said their clubs pond tour is July 9th
and tickets are $8. Their July meeting
will have Laurie & Katherine Kohout as guest speakers; topic is “Our pond
and plants.” Michael Jackson, of West
Plains WGS, said their club is taking care of some plantings along the
main square, but other than that all is quiet.
Lynn Jones, of St. Louis WGS, said their
topic for the next meeting is Goldfish and the invited speaker is from the St.
Louis Aquarium Society. She is also a
KHA and had an unusual case of a mink that attacked the koi. They also had their annual fundraising
auction and their pond tour. Ron
Carter, of Prairieland K&PS, said their next meeting is July
9th. They will have the
meeting at a member’s home and then they will have a mini pond tour of 4
ponds. At the executive board meeting,
Ron informed the rest of the board that he is calling for a review of the
bylaws. He wants to change the first
meeting of the year to March from February.
February is just too early. He
also wants to raise the dues for new members, as they get the club guide and
should pay more than the people who have been members for a while. Ron Bergman, of the Ohio KC,
said the June meeting was held on Sunday, June 12th, at Green Vista
Water Gardens with a tour included with the owner, Steve Blessing. Every type of exotic water garden plants and
koi, goldfish, golden orfs, tadpoles, etc. were there and many display
ponds. Election of officers took place
for the 2005-2006 year. They discussed
ways to help get more members and working on projects for the next year. There were 10 members present. Shelly Klinger, of Central Illinois
Water Gardeners, said there will be a Pond Walk July 9th in
the Bloomington/Normal area.
Written report submitted by Phil Hunter: Greg
Bates, of the Capitol Area K&WGC, reports that June was a
very busy month for the club. On June
11th the club had a field trip to Leppek’s Nursery, who sells water
garden plants, supplies and koi. On
June 19th the club held their monthly meeting at the home of Tony
& Susan Scruby. Curlee Foster
provided a pig roast for the group. The
topic of discussion was preparations for the Annual Pond Tour. On June 25 & 26th;
the club held their Annual Pond Tour.
There were 18 ponds on the tour and some of the ponds saw as many as 350
people came through on the tour. July
will also be a busy month for the club with a field trip to Able Koi & Pond
on the 10th; the regular meeting on the 17th at the home
of Jim & Tess Baker. The topic at
the meeting will be Transporting Fish.
Don Hellard, of the Gainesville K,GF&WGS, reports that
the club held their annual pond tour on June 11th, and it was
followed by a koi auction to the benefit of the club. The July meeting will be a plant swap to be held at Kanapaha
Gardens. In addition, several members
of the club are planning to attend Koi America in August. Ralph McGowan, of the Inland Empire
K&WGC, reports that the club has been very busy this spring. In April, the club cleaned up the
Nishinomiya Japanese Garden Pond in Spokane.
Over 65 people helped, including the Boy Scouts, two local high schools,
and Gonzaga University. Over 30 years
of accumulated muck was removed from the pond.
As a result, the club has received more recognition and publicity for
this than for any other activity that the club had undertaken. The club also participated in the Annual
Garden Expo and sold plants, netting over $900 in profit. The June meeting was held at Koi Gardens
which is owned and operated by Jeff and Cindy Dearing. Steve Devaney led a discussion on Algae and
how to control it. The July meeting
will be at the Rock Placing Company and will be a plant swap and Koi Forum open
discussion. The club will hold its
annual pond tour on July 17th with a minimum of 8
ponds on the tour in the
Spokane area. Judith Minor Roberts, of
the Mountaineer K&WGS, reports that the July meeting will be
held at the home of Dale Fox. Judith
and Marg McCutcheon will teach how to make stained glass stepping stones. In addition, this will be the club’s annual
swap meet and auction. The club’s next
meeting will be in
September at the home of
Ken & Betty Volkers. Linda Siler,
of the Springfield K&WGS, reports that the June meeting was
held at the home of Darrel and Annette Matlock. Brian Williams, from Kentucky, brought many beautiful plants to
sell and the sale was followed by a cookout on June 11th; June 12
the club held it’s annual public pond tour which was once again a great
success. The July meeting will be held
at Pond Pets and plants owned by George and Elaine Zenke. The program will discuss the difference
between string algae and green water algae and how to control them. On July 16th, the club will have
a mini pond tour for members followed by a picnic at Michael Fessenden’s Royce
Gardens. Club with no report this month
are: Dayton K&GFC and
the Shasta K&WGS.
Written
report submitted by Spike Cover: Dan Phillips, of North Carolina
K&WGS, reports that in May they held their 2nd
educational class in a series on pond design & filtration at the home of
Hal Brown. Five members were
Page

present who are in the
process of building new ponds. In June
they held their meeting at the home of Andy & Aleta Briggs; wonderful pond,
home, and garden. They also held their
3rd educational class with the topic on selecting tosai
and koi development at
Philip & JoAnne Bronikowski’s home.
July’s educational class topic is more on filtration design. Marc Skaggs, of NMZNA, said
their next meeting is at the Hare’s who own Waterscapes. Will be finalizing plans for the NMZNA Koi
Show to be held in September @ Rizzi’s in Plainfield, IL. Their president, Bob Brudd, has become a
full judge. Ray Jordan, of TKFGS,
reports they are having a wet lab in place of their July 17th
meeting. There seems to be more fish
parasite problems than usual with some out of the bottle treatments not working
that well compared to using full strength chemicals and mixing them
yourself. A number of members attended
the AKCA Seminar and had a great time.
They would like to recommend that the AKCA Board consider selecting 4-5
major tourist areas and larger cities to rotate the Seminar and utilize a
professional meeting planner to coordinate the majority of the activities. Tour packages could be put together with
reduced airfare, hotel, convention and side trips. Also having several major koi speakers would increase attendance
such as top Japanese breeders or hobbyists, top koi researchers, top hobbyists
or judges from around the world. Also
consider paying expenses and perhaps a small honoraria.
Written
report submitted by Ed:
Susan Borden of the Placid Pond & Koi Club, said they
continue to work toward their July 17th pond, pool and water feature
tour. They have their ticket/guide book
out in the selling locations and are hitting the news media with radio
interviews and articles. They are
hoping to interest reporters in the plight of carp and the KHV. They plan to Share their proceeds with the
Knox County Teen Court, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Knox County, their local
chapter of Baby Talk, and the KHV Research Project. They will have no regular meeting in July due to the work
surrounding the tour and will have a potluck meeting in august to celebrate
with all of those groups who have helped them make their tour the success that
they plan it to be. The Koi Club
of Middle Tennessee wanted to mention Duncan Griffith’s book (Advance
Koi Diagnosis & Treatments); received theirs last week and it is really
great. They thought this might be a
book AKCA would like to carry in their library and possibly for sale. No report for Cyprinus Society
of Nevada and Santa Clarita K&WGC.
Written
report submitted by Kelly Houston: The Inland Koi Society next
general meeting will be July 24th at Rudy & Tina Schmuck’s home;
Ed Salinas will be guest speaker on a koi topic of interest.
Written
report submitted by Joyce Glenn: Rod MacNeil, of Charleston Showa KC,
reported one of the members, Robert Lewis, VP of their club, was only able to
attend the Seminar for one day. Their
most recent pond tour had 25 ponds for a one day tour. They will be talking about that & and
upcoming exhibition where they sell the tickets to the pond tour. Ludo VanDenBognert, of Tampa Bay Koi,
reported their June meeting was held at Richard Schmidt’s home. They kicked back, enjoyed their friendships
and talked about netting fish. Bob
Want, of Florida West Coast, reported they will be having a
meeting about lotus with Elda Rae Yoshimura on Aug. 18. Prior to that, on July
10 they will meet at the Palmasola Botanical Gardens. Koi Club of Kansas had six members who went to the
Seminar; had a very enjoyable time.
Leroy Taba, of Hawaii Goldfish & Carp Assoc., said
everything is going well with club.
Ginny Lee, of Washington K&WGS, reported how well
planned they are: July is the annual barbeque, August is the dessert meeting
and while they are feasting they will be planning the annual koi show in
September. Michael Anderson, of Atlanta
KC, forwarded an email from a person representing a company who wants
to have AKCA consider becoming a “Buying group” for the clubs and label these
products under AKCA’s name. Joyce told
him we do not endorse any product; it is against our policies to treat our
advertisers that way.
Written
report submitted by Louie Hernandez: ZNA Southern Calif has set up
a fundraising booth at the annual Lotus Festival in Los Angeles. This is always a fun event for the
membership. Echo Park is the host for
this event; there are many vendors that sell a variety of goods. Games and a show tank to display large &
small koi are set up.
