Board
Highlights:
Ř
The
meeting was called to order by Chairperson Larry Leverett @ 7:15 pm.
v
MINUTES: Motion: To approve
the minutes of June 9. Motion by Larry,
2nd by Burt. Approved.
v
JUNE FINANCIAL STATEMENT/FINANCE COMMITTEE:
Doug reported that the investment fund gained
$184.20 in June. He paid $4935 annual
insurance and $1935 annual Errors & Omissions policies. He also sent $100 Judge Seminar rebate plus
Hyatt 15% Package rebate checks to 25 judges as well as $17,971 Seminar hotel
penalty. Burt is contesting the penalty
we paid to the hotel based on contract conflict with NY state law. Connie says 80% of bookstore orders come
thru the 1-i800 number so the cost of this service is still justified at $250/month
plus $50 for AT&T. 90 clubs have
paid their AKCA dues. Motion: To accept the Financial report. Motion by Harlan, 2nd by
Louie. Approved.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
v SCIENTIFIC: Spike’s report indicated that most of his goals were met; still needs to mail remaining shirts to those not attending the Seminar. Many of the red shirts had to be sent back to the vendor because the red dye ran on washing. There are 28 students signed up for class #6.
v KHV Project: Spike’s report indicated that they still have to finalize the new descriptions for members of the Steering Committee and members of the Proposal Review Group. They also have to identify potential new opportunities for the project as well as identifying and contacting prospective new Project committee members. One of their goals is to have a marketing plan for funding for the next fiscal year.
v
PUBLICATION: Harlan presented the report.
Tom had presented a printout of the home page of the website from Alpha
Servers and passed it around for all to see; ;had a pretty comprehensive list
of things on the left side. Tom also
described three phases of development.
The cost to complete phase 1 is $1000 with $250 down. $500 is due upon completion and final $250
on the sign-off of the finished project.
Phases 2 & 3 will cost $1500 each unless paid in advance and
completed along with Phase 1. Then the
price would be $1000 for a total of $3000 for all 3. This leaves them $2,000 from their initial estimate which will
allow $185 a month for miscellaneous expenses.
They also discussed how much editorial they want to have on the
website. Agreed to leave that in Joe’s
hands to work through. It was suggested
they use one current article and a few teasers of what is to come. They decided to establish a new “subscriber
only” area that would feature additional material, primarily additional
articles from prior and future issues.
They discussed the possibility of having two levels of magazine
subscriptions: paper & paper + electronic.
It was noted that they must remember to protect their hard copy
circulation since it could become financially cost prohibitive to print if the
print run got too small. Ron
volunteered to take over the review of the PCS reports and work on developing a
new circulation report for the board.
Tom will introduce Ron to Linda at PCS so he can work directly to get
the answers to any questions he may have.
Reports will go to Ron & Doug from now on. Steve reported he has a number of articles as well as a list of
available articles from Jim Riley. The
subscribers for this issue went up by 136.
Tom showed his new design for “free magazine” promotion for the clubs. When the cards are printed, they will be
shipped to Ron who will send 20 to each club.
Because the Koiphen show was cancelled, Tom requested we send him to
Pondapalooza instead. His plane
reservations can be changed to be used for that instead. It is hoped he will find new advertisers for
the magazine.
v
MEMBERSHIP: Doug reported that 90 clubs
have sent in their dues.
v
JUDGING: No report
Page 2
v
SPEAKER’S GRANT:
Doug reported
that the rep for Valley of the Sun misunderstood what AKCA would pay; they
submitted a bill for things not covered.
v
GUIDES: Burt reported that he had to switch to
filter guides; waiting for updates.
Should have all info within the next 30 days. Will be redoing the liner part for the pond guides.
v
INSURANCE: Burt reported there have been
no claims.

were 212 Seminar registrants, 232 at banquet including vendors, 99 people for
Thursday events not counting KHA Lab, 98 first time attendees and 158 early

everything went very well. The food was
super and the convention center was great.

was at Buffalo and their club handed out a great brochure for their

another, and enjoy members’ ponds that we do not get to see during the regular
meeting. The club will make a donation
to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association in memory of long time member Pat
Kolesar. Don Hellard, of the Gainesville
K,GF&WGS, reports that the June pond tour was held despite the

koi keeping, and was a big hit with the members. He will be asked to speak again at a future meeting. The club participated in the Greater Ozarks
Garden Tour along with two other garden groups. The event was well attended and visitors got to see many types of
gardens in addition to water gardens.
