Board Highlights:

v      Ballots for Koi Person of the Year & Koi of the Year ---Deadline is May 1st!

The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. by Larry Leverett.   There are 100 member clubs.

 

¨       INSURANCE:        Wes Bannister, our insurance agent, passed out a generic Brochure for our policy

from Zurich group (includes property coverage, i.e. books).  He discussed our coverage; emphasized

that we cannot sue ourselves or make a claim against ourselves against negligence.  He recommended

that we look into workman’s comp (i.e. a guard at a koi show who might get hurt or other volunteers,

not members of a koi club).  He also discussed insurance coverage for the KHA’s; recommended that

we have a release form to be signed to protect ourselves; can still be sued for negligence.  Burt will

write an information sheet on our insurance that will be sent to all of the clubs.

 

¨       MINUTES:

Motion:  To approve the Minutes of February 8, 2002 with the following correction:  Watergarden

Society of Kansas is now listed as Koi Club of Kansas.  Motion by Carl, 2nd by Joan.  Approved

 

¨       JANUARY/FEBRUARY FINANCIAL STATEMENT: 

KOI USA loaned AKCA $10,000 to keep AKCA in the black.  KOI USA, for the month of January, had a net profit of $1,970.92; for February it had a net loss of $22,378.72.  Year to date, KOI USA has a net profit of $1,877.86.  The net income for the AKCA 2002 Seminar is $5,721.34.  Motion:  To approve the Financial reports for the months of January and February.  Motion by Carl, 2nd by Harlen.  Approved

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS

 

¨       KOI USA:  Joyce reported that their billing person resigned.  Judy Caddies has taken over these

Responsibilities.  They have hired Sandy Kesling  to interpret the statistics that Publisher’s Creative

Systems provides.  These will help us determine our growth and should help them extract possible

guidelines for their marketing program.  The Barry Pavelec designed billing and subscription notices

have been given approval and are about to be implemented.  They have completed final proofing of the

Buyer’s Guide and it will arrive in April.  May/June of KOI USA is on its way to the printer.

¨       SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE:  Spike handed out the monthly KHA Program report; stated that Chris

did really well; finished and posted nutrition section and finished the test prep and started the filter

section testing.  Three more students dropped out for a total of 12 dropouts; 10 more sign-ups.  Spike

sent out more details on the Portland lab (our 1st lab).  We are still under budget.  For next month, Spike

will review and post the anatomy and phys section, etc.  Financial balance sheet to be presented to

AKCA monthly.

 

¨       MEMBERSHIP:  Doug reported that there are two active clubs that are interested in joining AKCA;

will probably join at the beginning of the fiscal year.

 

¨       JUDGING: Bob stated that San Diego just had a successful Japanese style show.  Everything is

 going well.

 

¨       SPEAKERS GRANT : No report.

 

¨       GUIDES:  Burt requested that the forms for guides not be sent in if you have already received your

complimentary guides unless you are purchasing additional guides.

 

¨       NOMINATIONS:  Joan stated that they have the slate for three of the four officers; still working on

the CFO position.  Will have the slate completed by next meeting.

 

SEMINAR REPORTS:

 

¨       2002 SEMINAR:  Mark reported that he has the schedule for the Seminar.  There was discussion as

to the workshops and AKCA meeting time.  Mark will talk further with Sheila. There were two

applicants for the AKCA scholarship for young adults.   Scholarship to be reviewed and scheduled

for the 2003 Seminar.

 

¨       2003 SEMINARS:   Doug stated that Burt has a great hotel contract signed; the Sheraton in Atlanta

for $89 a room; free parking.  They will sponsor a continental breakfast (the manager of the hotel

has a koi pond).  They have almost all of their committee chairs identified and have a booth

layout.

 

¨       2004/2005 SEMINARS:  Open; still looking at several sites for upcoming Seminars.  Please contact

us if your club is interested!

 

REPRESENTATIVE CONTACTS:

 

q       Written report submitted by Burt: Henry Culpepper, of Central Florida, stated that there was no

meeting for March.  He was voted Koi Person of the Year for their club.  They will vote on Koi of

the Year next month; question about negatives (their photographer doesn’t want to relinquish the

negative); will this be an issue?  Joe White, of Florida East Coast, said that Paula Biles spoke at

their last meeting; very informative.  Their Koi Person of the Year is John Canfield.  Will do Koi

of the Year in April; no meeting in March due to AFKAPS.  Johnny Foster, of Nature’s Coast

K&WGC, said that there are no problems yet; next meeting will be on St. Pat’s Day; Irish

celebration at the Foster’s.  Gainesville has been asked to join them; have a speaker on plants; lot

of members working on AFKAPS.  Field trip on April 7th to a nursery.  Norbun Watson, of

Warner Robins, said that they are getting ready for Pond Tours in June; no problems with

anybody’s pond.  Daryll Welch, of Oklahoma KC, said they are trying to set up a “wet lab” with

Oklahoma University to use their lab and train their members to diagnose parasites, etc.  They are

going to buy a box of high end 6” koi from Infiltration; some are going to the Texas Yoshida sale

in April.  Next meeting on bringing koi out of the winter.  Carl Fridenstine, of Santa Clara Valley

Koi, said that they are getting ready for show; will be taking tanks, etc. to the Cow Palace Koi

Show.  Their last meeting was at the American Legion Hall; used microscopes & also tested

several member’s water.  Debby Young, of Southern Arizona KC, would like minutes for AKCA

to be e-mailed to her to put on web site so she doesn’t have to scan them.  15 of their members

entered fish in the Phoenix koi show; won several awards; 205 fish in the show.  Still working on

the pond tour; will be a day & night tour for 2 days in April.  Sheila Jackson, of San Francisco

Bay KC, is working on the AKCA Seminar details; going over by-laws.  Has Grant Fujita and a

speaker from Holland to speak on pond & filter design systems; went over things to do as well as

not to do.  Linda Montgomery, of Cascade K&GFS, will do Koi Person or Koi of the Year attheir

next meeting.  Got several new members from the Yard Garden & Patio Show in Convention

Center in Portland.  Peter Enfield, of Pacific Wonderland, said their last meeting was at Sunset

Koi (formerly Clearwater…Tony Prew); speaker was a pump manufacturer, Performance Pro;

informative talk.  Will do Koi Person and Koi of the Year at their next meeting

 

q       Written report submitted by Bob: Cheryl Climenhaga, of Forest City, said that it’s still snowing. 

Their meeting will be March 17th; have a speaker who will talk about Ornamental Grass. Charles

Phelps, of Greater Louisville, said that their next meeting is March 9th; Speaker is Mark

Bodycott; will talk about filters.  Todo Todorsky, of North Florida KC, said that he is their new

 rep.   Mona Coleman, of North Nevada, said that their annual Seminar will be April 21-22;

Speaker’s will be Dr. Erik Jolhnson (Health) and Doug Dahl (Judging Koi). Pat Christensen, of

Northwest K&GF, said that they are getting ready for their koi show this July.  Art & Nicole

Lembke are the Judges.   SoCal Koi Club did not have a regular meeting in February; in March

there will be a meeting at Craig Carley’s home to see his new pond.  They are preparing for a pond

tour in May; 4-6 ponds in the Los Angeles area.  Carole Elliott was voted as their Koi Person of

the Year; will vote on Koi of the Year next month. They will have a koi display at the Orange

County Buddhist Temple April 13-14 and planning a koi auction in August.   Lester Berkow, of

Tropical KC, said that they had their 1st Koi Show last February; 60 koi entered; Lester Judged

and Joe White did everything else (joke).  Bob tried but was unable to contact the following clubs: 

Rocky Mountain KC.  & Sierra Koi Club.

 

q       Written report submitted by Doug: Gary Chin, of Camellia KC, and Doug discussed carp recipes from

a popular TV Japanese cooking show but did not discuss club business this month.  Art Lembke,

of Mid Atlantic KC, reports things are going well in the East.  There has been a very mild winter

and they met in February to go over this years programs including 2 Young Koi Shows in May

and June.  The regular MAKC Show will be in September.  Tulsa Koi Society reports they

selected their Koi of the Year using photos at the February meeting.  Their March meeting will

include a program on how to catch and transport Koi and April meeting will discuss Koi

Identification.  Ron Goforth, of Moto Kara Koi Kai, reports Shigeru Mano of Dianichi Koi in

Japan will speak at their meeting at Ron’s home on March 23rd.  David Smothers, of North

Carolina K&WGS, reports their March meeting will plan their April cull auction.  They will be

featured in their local paper to further educate the public about the Koi hobby.  Kenneth Wong, of

Koi & WGC of North Texas, reports their February meeting with a wet lab was a success with

over 45 persons attending.  They are currently busy planning their Young Koi Show to be held at

Aquatic Landscapes in Fairview, Texas.  Virginia Joiner, of Lone Star ZNA KC, reports their

guest speaker for February was Boyd Newman, of Purdin Koi, who lectured on the Koi farm and

new products.  Kay Larson, of Olympic KC, reports their ponds are COLD and the fish are

hiding.  They will have a new Director soon and will let us know who it will be.  Doug tried to
