REPRESENTATIVE
CONTACTS:
q Written report submitted by
Doug: Judy Schwartz, of Austin Pond Society,
reports the April club meeting topic was using bonsai and trains as part of
your water garden. The May meeting will
be the club annual plant and fish swap.
Members continue to prepare for a Pond tour in July. Gregory Mariano, of Central Calif. KC,
reports the club Pond tour is May 19.
Gwen Langford, of Dai Ichi KC, reports 22 members from the
Vancouver Koi club attended the April meeting including a tour of local ponds
and gardens and a buffet lunch. The
meeting topic was the upcoming PNKCA convention June 15-17 in Richmond,
BC. Becky Maier, of Enchanted
K&WGC, reports the club has voted to disband. Steve Childers, of Internet Koi of
North America, reports IKONA members presented Friendship Awards at ZNA
So Cal show. The club will conduct a
live meeting on May 5 at the SKE Show.
There are plans to also provide Friendship Awards at the SKE and OKC
Shows. Dara Newman, of Las Vegas
KC, reports members are busy preparing for the annual Pond Tour which
will include a raffle/auction. Last
year this made over $1700. The club
tried to tie a blood drive with the Pond Tour but could not get enough
support. Pond Tour booklets were
distributed among members and at Plant World to encourage attendance. Judy Christian, of Long Star ZNA KC,
reports club members attended Nelson’s Annual Spring Garden Party on April
21. Members sold tickets to the
upcoming Houston Pond Tour for June 2/3.
Club Koi of the Year and Koi Person of the Year nominations were sent in
to AKCA. Pam Francis, of Michigan
K&PC-SE, reports members held an Educational Event on April 21
entitled “Taking the Fear Out of Treating Sick Fish” with Mickey Stonepainter
as lecturer. The demonstration included
handling and anesthetizing fish and putting on topical medication. The May meeting topic will be pond
construction, building bogs and streams and trickle down filter and quarantine
tank. The club will hold their annual
fish auction in June. Dot Wilbanks, of Moto
Kara Koi Kai, reports the club will host Shigery Mano on the 2nd
weekend in May. Mr. Mano will have his
beautiful Dainichi koi for sale at Ron Goforth’s home for this meeting. Club members also attended the San Antonio
club meeting and visited Nelson’s Water Garden in Kary, TX during April. Paula Snyder, of Nashville Pond
Society, sent the club newsletter to Doug but had to tell her that he
contacts 28 clubs each month, do not have time to scan newsletters and would
prefer a simple email with a summary of club events. Dan Olson, of North Idaho Koi Keepers, reports members discussed
the recent Matsunosuke Seminar in California which members attended. The discussion continued to the Showa
variety. Finally, a potassium
permanganate treatment to a pond was demonstrated. At the May meeting members will discuss the study koi imported
from Toshio and Miwa Sakai one year ago which were kept in an outdoor pond and
members want to see the growth and health differences in the fish. The June meeting topics will demonstrate
quarantine systems, trickle towers and drawing blood from a koi. Melinda Smieja, of Olympic K,G&WGC,
reports she and her husband are getting so excited about attending the upcoming
AKCA Seminar in Phoenix in June. The
club is looking forward to summer plans.
Sheb Masters, of The Great Smoky Mountain KC&PS,
reports members are planning a water lily planting class as a promotion to add
new members. Members are also planning
their Pond Tour and a road trip in the future.
Club members are in the process of assisting some new members with
issues with ponds and fish including a fish rescue at one pond. Dick Emerick, of Upper Midwest KC,
reports their first koi show planning is coming together well. Even though membership is small, everybody
is helping. The show requirement for
all wet vendors to provide a KHV health certificate (serology only) from a
reputable testing facility does not seem to have hampered vendor participation
in the show. The topic for the last
club meeting was a demo of a DIY 50 gallon barrel filter for a quarantine
system. The next meeting will be at Koi
Acres for a barbeque with a local
Page

q fish Vet lecturing on fish
health and the proper way to net and handle koi. Dick and his wife were on the way to the SKE show in North
Carolina. Mary Oxman, of Ventura
KC, reports the last club meeting was held at the home of a club member
with a tortoise and one of the other club members is active with a tortoise
rescue group and may be able to find a mate for the tortoise. The koi and water gardening hobbies fit in
with other hobbies people have. The
club newsletter includes a small paragraph telling how the meeting host got
interested in ponds, gardening and koi and how the host has moved deeper into
the hobby over the years. Robbi
McCleney, of Valley of the Sun KC, reports members in their club
and SAKA are all working hard to make this a great AKCA Seminar June
21-24. The attendance may not be a
large one but those who come will enjoy themselves and be happy they
attended. The tours to the Grand Canyon
on the train are very popular. The
Sedona Spa or Golf tours turned out not to be popular and were cancelled. Robbi is also very busy building a new pond
at her home in hope it will be ready for the Seminar Pond Tour. Doug tried to contact the following clubs
with no response: Blue Water PC;

report submitted by Carole Elliott: Larry Hursh, of Genesse Valley Pond
& KC, said that in June the GWPAKC will be staffing an information
booth at Bergen Water Gardens “Lily Fest” to answer questions about the club,
koi keeping and water gardening. We
will host our monthly meeting just prior to their plant and product auction
fundraiser which has been the closing event for their participation at
LilyFest. They hope this will help to
recruit new members to keep the club growing.
They apply the proceeds from the auction to educational materials and
their speaker funding. July will be a
very busy month. They are having a “mystery”
topic for their July meeting which is being delayed until the 2nd
Friday of the month to avoid any conflicts with members holiday plans. The following week they will join the
members of the Niagara Frontier K&PC for their pond tour and picnic. Then they will end the month with their pond
tour and picnic on the last Saturday.
Members of NFKPC will be joining their tour as well. Since July was busy, they decided that their
August meeting will feature a photo review from the two pond tours and various
garden tours in their area. This will
allow those who were unable to attend these various events to see what they
missed and get new ideas from them and the descriptions and discussions that
they develop. Gini Cope, of Bakersfield
K&WGS, said they had their last meeting at Ken & Diane Hammers
home/pond. He gave them the scenario
where they were given $1,000 to upgrade his pond. How would they do it and with what materials. It showed the diverse ideas people can come
up with using the same basic area.
Their auction was a success. They
could use other ideas for raising money for new tanks, most of theirs are very
worn & old. Gini Cope was named Koi
Person of the Year. They are hoping to
get together with the Fresno Koi Club this summer for a joint picnic. They did it a couple of years ago and it was
great! Jan Jordan, of Mid ColumbiaK&PC,

trip @ his breeding farm. Ron Bodeker

report submitted by Joyce Glenn: Michael Anderson, of Atlanta KC,
reported that the Atlanta Koi Club was a major supporter of the first Southern
Koi Exposition held May 4-6 in Winston-Salem, NC. AKC loaned show tanks, bowls, aquaria and other equipment for the

Nishikigoi Reserve Grand Champion, Goldfish Grand Champion and Goldfish Reserve
Grand Champion. Bob Waag, of Florida
West Coast K&WGC, said no one will be attending the Seminar from
the club; they don’t believe a change in the date will have any influence. Ludo Van den Bogart, of Tampa Bay
K&WGC, said they don’t think anyone is going from their club. About changing the date, they feel that if
anyone wants to go to the seminar, they will go no matter when or where. Rod MacNeil, of Charleston Showa KC,
doesn’t think anyone is going from their club.
Changing the date they are
trying to get ponds ready for the tour and that’s 28 of them. Joyce Tsuji, of Washington KC,
said that the Tour of Bloedel Reserve is this weekend. They will tour Bainbridge Gardens on
Bainbridge Island next. A beginning
wetlab is happening next weekend. This

said no one from their club will be coming to the Seminar. Changing the
Page
6
q date
would probably not make a difference.
Last month they celebrated Children’s Day at the Japanese Cultural
Center with a display and games. This
weekend is the Annual Pet expo and this club will have a display of koi for all
the visitors to see. Time that will all
change. They can expect to have a
write-up and pictures about that. Dave
Peebler, of Koi Club of Kansas, said that two ladies will be
taking their final exams for KHA at the Seminar. That may be all that will be attending this year. With all the info on the internet, people
don’t feel quite the need to go to Seminars except for the social life.

report submitted by Harlan Glenn: Chuck Poppe, of ZNA Potomac,
reported that the club will hold their koi auction in two weeks and their koi

people from theirclub will attend the koi Seminar at Phoenix with one more
undecided who might go. Chuck indicated
they are in favor of changing the June date of the Seminar. Chuck is wondering if Marriott points are
worth using for the Seminar.
