present. It was felt that all statements need to be

timely
accounting. This needs to re rectified
ASAP.
FINANCE COMMITTEE MEETING
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 1ST
@ 9:00 A.M.
To be held at:
529 W. Blueridge Ave., Orange 92867
¨ KOI USA: Joyce reported that Koi USA board met November 5th. The Treasurer’s report was given as
was a report about accounts receivable; both show us to be very healthy. Lisa has been working to set
up slush funds for the post office so the monies are there. She has been working to set up procedures,
especially a chart as to the timing of when payments are due and to whom. Tom presented Barry
Page 2
Pavelec’s report that shows the various methods of soliciting new subscriptions. They are
considering direct mail on a small scale, preferably in one test area to newly dropped subscribers.
¨ SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE: No report
¨ KHA ADVISER: Spike e-mailed his report. Most of the goals for the KHA program were
completed including doing a bio-spira testing, working on the insurance issue, and getting the holed
harmless agreement validated/approved. Burt has continued testing on his Pond Design section. 4 new
students (49 total enrolled now). Spike contacted Andy Goodwin at U of AR, Pine Bluff; he agreed to
look at Biotalk (for free) in addition to what he’s done already. He also contacted U of GA about
testing carrier status of KHV koi; we’re still discussing how AKCA might be involved in carrier status
research. He contacted Greg Lewbart, North Carolina State University, who said he is interested in the
testing proposals and will get back to him once he’d reviewed the info
¨ MEMBERSHIP: Doug stated that there are 93 paid clubs; 6 said that the check is in the mail. 4
clubs were dropped, three voluntarily. Three new clubs have sent in their check and club roster.
Doug has checked; everything in order. Motion: To approve Dallas Koi Kichi Group as a
member AKCA club. Motion by Doug, 2nd by Bob. Approved. Motion: To approve Pioneer
Valley Water Garden & Koi Club. Motion by Doug, 2nd by Bob. Approved. Motion: To
approve First Coast Koi, Goldfish, and Water Garden Club. Motion by Doug, 2nd by Bob.
Approved.
¨
JUDGING: Bob
discussed last month’s approval of a motion submitted by Linda Montgomery. He
felt that the board did not have the correct information on fees and expressed concern about the
financial ramification of the approved motion. It was felt that this would cost us between $2,000
to $4,000. Doug stated that the way to rectify any problems would be to rebate judges the
Seminar fee.
¨ SPEAKERS GRANT : No report
¨ GUIDES: No report
¨ Finance Committee: Scheduled a meeting to go over the proposed bookkeeper and AKCA
administrative position.
FINANCE COMMITTEE MEETING
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 1ST
@ 9:00 A.M.
To be held at:
529 W. Blueridge Ave., Orange 92867
¨
Insurance Committee: Burt stated that he still needs a
conversion of the back issues of KOI USA
into a monetary value. Carole asked when the committee had last met; Larry & Doug stated that
they were unaware of a committee.
¨ Website Committee: Burt stated that not that many clubs have entered the contest. They are on
schedule with the deadline for clubs to enter the website contest of December 31st; judging will
start on February 1st. All clubs should still sign up (can only win in one category); everyone has a
Page 3
chance to win in one of the categories. Burt stated that there will be a 7th category; eliminated 3rd
place; the 7th category will be overall website.
For the Website Contest –
DEADLINE
IS DECEMBER 31ST….Judging Starts Feb. 1, 2003
Please use akca.org
¨ Nomination Committee: Larry appointed Joan to head the nomination committee; she will pick
others to serve on her committee.
SEMINAR REPORTS:
¨ 2003 SEMINAR: Doug will be working with each committee chair. They will have a website:
www.atlantakoiclub.com Doug talked to Debby Young about linking their website to the AKCA
website. Concern has been expressed over the length of the Saturday night banquet. It was felt
that more fish would have been bought if delayed shipping had been in place. This has to be up to
the dealer to provide.
¨ 2004 SEMINAR: Leroy Taba, of the Hawaii Koi Club, has stated that they want to host the Seminar
in Hawaii. There was discussion about how this would impact the number of participants; might
be too expensive for those, especially on the east coast. It was felt that if we have a package deal
with airfare and hotel included, that the cost would be greatly reduced. Leroy already has two
hotels in mind; one on the beach with the other a couple of blocks away (this one is cheaper).
Motion: to accept Hawaii for the 2004 Seminar. Motion by Doug, 2nd by Carole. Approved.
Larry appointed Burt to chair the Seminar.
¨ 2005/6 SEMINARS: Tabled until February

Chinese gift exchange
q Written report for Larry: Fritz Jetten, of the Gulf Coast Koi Society, said President Kathy Barnard
attended the recent koi show in Charlotte, NC. She thought it was great. She mentioned that the
wet lab was wonderful for a training seminar. Dr. Erik Johnson was one of the speakers and
Kathy found him to be informative and a “very nice person”. Fritz also said Kathy, Donna Wood
and Norma Propst entered koi in the Atlanta Show and Norma received 6 blue ribbons. Donna
won Japan Fest Award for her Kohaku and Kathy won Mature Champion for her Utsuri. They all
said Frank Comtois did an excellent job as show Chairman. Shelly Klinger, of Central Illinois
Water Gardeners, said they held their October meeting in the atrium of Scotchwood Nursing
Home, site of their one day start-to-finish pond construction project. Frieda McArdell, of a
Passion for Ponds, spoke about the steps taken to transform the courtyard from a weedy eyesore to
the lush and much appreciated garden that it is now. Bulbs from the fundraiser were distributed,
and board members for 2003 were elected. There will be no meetings in November and December
due to the holiday crunch. Ladean Paden, of Prairieland Pond Society, said they would hold
their last meeting of the year Nov. 9th at Glen Oak Zoo. Topic of discussion will be winterizing
the pond and protecting plants this winter. They have a new web address:
Prairieland_pond.tripod.com and e-mail at: prairielandpond@msn.com. Sandy Fisher, of Mid-
Michigan Pond & Water Garden Society, said they are closing down for the winter, their last
meeting was October. They will be having a Christmas party December 11th. Bob Dice is the
new contact for the Ohio Koi Club having taken over for Judy Ensley. We have had some miss
communication, but we may have it ironed out now. Kaye Huff, of West Plains WGS; we have
the wrong address; will attempt to correct that by the next meeting. Boston Koi Keepers,
Madison Area Pond Society, Nanaimo Fish Pond, and St. Louis WGS have not responded to
repeated contacts. Please let us know you’re alive!
q Written report submitted by Doug: Art Lembke, of Mid Atlantic KC, reports MAKC is serious about
hosting the 2005 AKCA Seminar jointly with Koi America. Key will decide officially at their
Board meeting in February. Art reports he and Nicole just returned from Japan and they bought
too many koi as usual. Prices are good in Japan this year. Planning for the Xmas parties is under
way and also planning for Koi America in August, 2003. David Hester is the Koi America event
Chairman for 2003. Art, speaking for fellow eastern koi hobbyists, feels Hawaii is too costly in
air fare and distance to consider
for the 2004 AKCA Seminar. David
Smothers, of North
Carolina K&WGS, reports their club supported the Charlotte Koi Show. Their club just
completed their first Koi of the Year Photo contest with the results available at their Christmas
Social. David said the North Carolina and Piedmont Koi Clubs want to throw their hat into the
ring for hosting the 2005 AKCA Seminar; so far AKCA has 3 candidate locations to consider.
(Doug Dahl is recommending AKCA hold off on this selection until spring, 2003). Dot
Page 5
Wilbanks, of Moto Kara Koi Kai, reports their club traveled to San Antonio to support their koi
show in October. Several club members swon awards at the San Antonio show. Brett Rowley
gave a lecture on koi appreciation including types of koi, diseases and proper environment at their
recent meeting. They held a raffle for a bead filter donated by Water Garden Gems and a $1,000
valued Goshiki donated by Andy Moo. Virginia Joiner, of Lone Star ZNA KC, said that Houston
is having flooding. Their club toured the Purdin Koi Farm during a club trip with members
learning a lot about breeding koi. Their club is planning their annual “trash and treasure” auction
at their upcoming Christmas party. Deb Goddard, of Tulsa Koi Society, reports she had a good
time at the San Antonio Koi show and did OK with her koi. Their club is evaluating the potential
for hosting an AKCA Seminar in the future and has received information from Doug Dahl to
explain what is involved. Ray Jordan, of Texas K&GFS, reports their koi show was a success
with 28 entrants and 198 koi plus 10 longfins. 7 entrants were entered for the first time. They
added a non-Gosanke Grand Champion Award for the first time. They had great attendance at the
show and Seminars and used a flow thru water system for the first time. The flow thru system
was a success requiring no added chemicals, just airstones. (Doug-It must be nice to have a dealer
with a good well to provide flow thru water for a show). Their club is getting ready for their
annual trek to Bretts Koi Farm this month to watch a pond pulling and koi harvest. Kenneth
Wong, of Koi & WGC of North Texas, reports they are currently modifying their By-Laws.
Several club members traveled to the San Antonio Koi Show, entered koi and brought
awards. He felt the show was also a great success. They are getting ready for their Christmas
party which includes a Chinese gift exchange. Their club is up to 140 people. Some of their
members plan to attend the Lone Star Koi Club Beginner’s Koi Tutorial Seminar to be given by
Doug Dahl in January. Ken was also active in starting the new Dallas Koi Club and will be the
AKCA Director that that club as well. Gary Chin, of Camellia KC, reports they held their
October meeting at Oh So Koi (formerly Koi World USA). New owner, Bill Swearingon, gave
members a tour of facilities and the mud ponds. Bill is new to koi and appreciated the advice
given by club members. The topic at the November club meeting will be Oxidation Reduction
Potential (ORP). The Olympic KC will be voting for new Officers at their November meeting.
Their newsletter recently featured an article by Larry Christensen of the ZNA Northwest Chapter
Koi Club on Putting Your Fish & Pond to Bed for the Winter. Bob Slack, of Blue Water Pond
Club, reported they paid their dues and AKCA has now received it. Their club will shut down
from Jan. thru March for the winter. Leon Lopez, of Klahanie Koi Club, reported they are
desperate to add to their 6 remaining members and have tried everything from Seminars, teaming
with a local nursery and garden show displays to encourage local people to take an interest in koi
and their club. Leon believes the economic downturn is discouraging people from venturing into
home landscape or pond improvements. Also, a majority of their community are seniors Leon
believes may be part of the problem getting new people involved in koi. Their last effort will be
to support a 4 day local garden show next Spring with Seminars and perhaps a koi display. Judy
Schwartz, President of the Austin KC, reports their new AKCA Director is Matt Healey; will
contact him starting in January. Their club is growing and they recently had a 2 hour live koi
judging exercise and also several members attended the San Antonio Koi Show. They plan to join
other koi clubs in the annual koi harvest at Brett Rowley’s koi farm. In January, they have their
annual silent auction. Doug requested the club to send in the forms to AKCA with their new
Officers and AKCA Director information to avoid losing contact with AKCA; that happens too
often due to clubs not sending in
changes in Officers! Claudia Herdeman,
of Austin Pond
Society, reported she is still the current AKCA Director for the club but expects to be replaced
soon at club Officer election time. The club has helped form a new Garden Club Society (like
AKCA) for all garden clubs in the state of Texas called PAPS. Ginger Duncan, of Las Pampas
K&WGS, reports they are planning their Xmas party and they held a very successful pond tour
this summer during the day and night hours. Their pond hyacinths have grown 3 feet tall this year
providing a beautiful display. Their club recently had a plant give away and a lecture from Mr.
Page 6
Endsly, of Oklahoma, on diseases of koi. Bob Dethman, of Idaho Water Garden Society,
reports they are already planning for next year and for Officer elections soon. For 2 years now,
their club has maintained and stocked a public pond at the historical train station and they are
planning the cleaning event for this fall. They included goldfish with their koi show for the first
time this year with 90 koi, 70 goldfish and 15 dealers including bonsai, rose and orchid vendors.
They have moved their show to the historical train station site with the pond they maintain. The
Grand Champion of their show was a beautiful, large Konoko Showa. Their club is up to 200
members and the quality of koi is improving with every koi show as members discern the
difference between pretty pond koi and high quality show koi. One local dealer is focusing on
high quality Gosankes and show koi for club members to purchase along with dealers from other
parts of the country who bring their quality koi to Boise for sale. Doug promises to try harder to
contact all clubs at leaset every other month on a rotating basis. Doug tried to contact the
following clubs but received no reply this month: Mendocino Coast KC; ZNA Northern
Midwest Chapter Koi Club; and Tulsa Koi Society. Doug did not contact the following club
this month but will in January: Ventura Koi Club.
q Written report submitted by Bruno Kudrecki: Bruno, of Koi Kichi & WGC, said that Spike Cover,
their guest speaker, gave his lecture on water quality, fish loads and how to determine if our ponds
are overcrowded. Their 2nd auction at Eastern Nishikigoi was a great success. Their November
meeting will be at a picnic with several clubs at Live Oak Park in Fallbrook, CA. It will be a
potluck; will travel to California Koi Farms afterwards where Takemi will dredge one of his mud
ponds. Takemi is planning a $5.00 per ticket raffle; he will select a koi valued at $300 to $500 for
the lucky winner.
q Written report submitted by Carole: The Southwest Koi & Pond reports that their annual holiday
social gathering will be held Tuesday, December 10th at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino with
a buffet style dinner. For their October meeting, Dr. Tom McCabe gave a great presentation on
koi surgery; he is their club vet, member and friend. Their 1st Pond Tour was a wonderful event.
For their November meeting, members are encouraged to wear their new SKAPA-Tshirt to get
free admission at the El Paso Zoo. Guest speaker will be Dr. Kelly Helmick, the El Paso Zoo
veterinarian. They will also have election of new officers at this meeting. There will be no
meetings in January and February. The Florida Koi & Water Garden Society held their Oct.
26th meeting at Kit Knott’s home; has around thirty (30) ponds at her home, all filled with water
lilies. Elections for officers and director to be held in November. They will go to Black Water
Creed Fish Farm on Nov. 24th and have their annual Christmas Party at Elmore Evans on Dec.
14th. Richard Adema, of Canada Koi Club, said that for their Feb. meeting they had Keith Tom
demonstrate to members on how to use the microscope in viewing koi pathogens for disease
prevention. For March, there was a demonstration on how to safely inject koi. April: members
took a trip over to the Island to attend a Seminar hosted by the Dai-Ichi Koi Club featuring none
other than Steve Childers. May: was a plant swap along with a koi sale donated by one of the
members; was thinning his pond. Sept.: annual barbecue and pond tour where the club invites
members from Dai-Ichi Koi Club and the Nanaimo Koi Club (this is done every two years for Dai-
Ichi and CKC Alternate). Club had 30+ guest members attend this event. Oct.: meeting was the
start of Executive member nominations for year 2003 and discussion on the Annual Christmas
Dinner plus making plans on getting a proper club web site set up. Executive was thinking that
maybe it is time to go forward with the project. Larry Bortner, of Chesapeake & Potomac, said
that it has been very difficult to get people involved in the club; has tried a number of things to
attract members. Larry Hursh, of Genesee Valley Pond, said that they recently had elections;
same officers except they added a VP in training. Their Christmas party will be the 1st Friday in
December; will do a take off on Jeopardy with questions related to koi/ponds. Their January
meeting will be a general meeting with input into topics & speakers for the coming year. They
had a meeting with Niagara Frontier with a presentation from Greg Young. Would like to see an
Page 7

recently had a Pond Expo; 1st one in the midwest at Poland Farm in July. They had several
speakers; was a big event. They will have their award dinner on Dec. 12th; also, an
anthology/memorial. Jan Jordan, of Mid-Columbia KC, said that they are planning their
Christmas Party. Ron Boedeker spoke at their last meeting on the salt tester. They have about 80
family members. They are also making ID cards for their members with their club logo and
members name so that members can present it when purchasing supplies/koi from dealers (for
their discount). Their web site is a work in progress. Bill Bedwin, of Northern Lights Pond &
KS, said that elections will be this month. They had a fish sale during the summer. Their

want to get posters printed to put in locations (i.e. koi dealers) where a koi hobbyist might
frequent. They have field trips planned for next near. Rich Booker is the new rep for Puget
Sound KC; spoke briefly to his wife. Carole called but was unable to reach the
following clubs: Saline

January.
q Written report submitted by Lisa Barnett: Norm Call, of Oregon K&WGS, was congratulated and
awarded their very first Koi Person of the Year Award at their Show ceremony. They also
presented Richard and Marla Stevenson a Show Appreciation Award for their work, well done.
OK & WS also held their first Annual BBQ/Picnic, which sounds like it was loads of fun.
Members had the opportunity to bring a sleeping bag and camp out at the Dogwoods Garden
Motel (run by Norm Call). The 22nd Annual Northwest Koi & Goldfish show was a great success
with 201 koi and 233 goldfish entered. They were invited to join the Northwest Koi & Goldfish
Club on a members only pond tour. The club and especially Linda Montgomery were wonderful
host and the members had a great time & took lots of pictures. They are looking forward to
having their own pond tour and being able to reciprocate the fun! Nishiki Koi Club has recently
added the addition of a website (NishikiKoiClub.com) and is trying out a new feature for local
hobbyist. They are allowing hobbyist only, for a minimal fee, to post a price, contact info and a
picture of a fish that they want to cull from their pond. The first few fish posted have sold in just a
number of days. The revenue helps pay for the website. In addition, NKC is holding a silent
auction of a koi bench and preparing for a koi auction in January. The Show committee is getting
underway to prepare for the Young Koi Show at the end of April at the Fullerton Arboretum. Lisa
will contact Nashville Pond Society in January.

OLD BUSINESS:
Ø
Seminar Committee: Those present felt it was a good ideal, however, want to
table.
NEW BUSINESS:
Ø Administrative Assistant: Doug has proposed a paid position of AKCA Administrative Assistant
and listed what he saw as the job responsibilities of this position. It was felt that before we make a
decision that would affect us financially, the finance committee would need to review Doug’s
proposal and come back to the Board with their recommendation. (See finance committee).
Ø Executive Board Meetings: Carole stated that the Executive Board should meet on a regular basis,
possibly quarterly. She felt that there are items/concerns that need to be reviewed and discussed
before being brought to the full board. Larry stated that he was open to having such meetings.
Will need to schedule the first one.
