The
meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. by Larry Leverett. There are 104
member clubs.
MINUTES:
Motion: To accept the minutes of September 14, 2001 with the following
corrections: Several typos; under Financial report, $1,132.91 for KOI USA
incorrect; should read $1,325.54. under Doug's report; the word blue should
read club. Motion by Bob, 2nd by Joyce. Approved
SEPTEMBER
FINANCIAL STATEMENT: Carl stated that extra bills have come in from the 2001
Seminar; the Seminar will probably go into the hole (probably several hundred
dollars). In the event a Seminar goes into the hole, AKCA pays for any
outstanding bills/loss. KOI USA had a net income, for year to date, of
$13,701.99. The pond construction guide price will probably go up to $5.00.
COMMITTEE
REPORTS
KOI
USA: Joyce reported that they are interviewing a second person for marketing
KOI USA. He lives in New Jersey and just today received their packet for his
evaluation. Tom is gearing up for next year's Buyer's Guide and is in the
process of contacting advertisers. They are getting Jan/Feb magazine ready to
go now.
SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE: Spike said that they
are making progress, although not as much as he had hoped for. They are working
on updating the koi health adviser (KHA); sent out mailings.
He
is talking with Gary Chin about the Seminar and handing out certificates there.
A number of goals have been completed. Registrations will be closed at the end
of Oct. Next month, Spike is hoping to get a water quality section on the
internet up and running. Chris Neeves is working on the filter. We should have
90 people for the first class. He is also working with Debby Young for a closed
web board for questions and answers. He also showed those present a new book,
Diseases of Carp, by Hoole, Bucke, Wellby, and Burgess. Motion: To purchase of
100 of Nick Saint Erne's books at a 50% discount off list price at an
approximate cost of $5,000. Motion by Burt, 2nd by Bob. Approved.
MEMBERSHIP:
Doug stated that a new club, the Water Garden and Koi Society of Alberta, has
submitted their application, check, roster and he has also talked with them;
everything is OK. Motion To approve Water Garden and Koi Society of Alberta as
an AKCA member club. Motion by Doug, 2nd by Burt. Approved Doug has also
verified that all clubs have gotten their guides and minutes. Doug has made
corrections to the club kit.
JUDGING: Bob stated that they are busy; have worked hard on the
Seminar. They will be having Kodama as a speaker.
SPEAKERS BUREAU: No report.
SPEAKERS GRANT: Larry stated that he received
a letter from Northern Midwest ZNA & Indiana KC requesting a speakers
grant. We will need to contact them to inform them that they need 6 clubs
participating in order to receive this grant.
GUIDES: Judy stated that two clubs sent us cards/letters
thanking us for the guides. Fred Vogel, of Shasta and Praireland both sent in
cards thanking us for the great health guides.

SEMINAR
REPORTS:
2002 SEMINAR: Mark stated that several ideas
have helped move the Seminar forward. Prices have been determined for the costs
of the 3 tours: San Francisco, wine tour, and dealer tour. Norm Call is doing
the pins; we need 500 pins. Most committee heads are in place and beginning the
rigorous tasks that need to occur. Several new sponsors are being considered
including one of the major airlines. A schedule has been produced by Carolyn
Van Hoeck for the speakers with tentative times; they need to plug in the
people doing the speaking. Mark and Carl will fly to San Francisco the weekend
of the 274h to meet with the committee heads and establish what help AKCA can give
them. Georgia Vonk suggested setting up a speaker's fund to help underwrite the
cost of speakers at Seminars. Discussion.
2003 SEMINARS: Doug has done a template for
timelines, including setting a budget as well as the completion of a
registration form. This has never been done before, to this extent, and was
very impressive. It should be of tremendous help to any club(s) organizin a
Seminar. It was done chronologically and by committees.
2004/2005
SEMINARS: Open; Spokane is considering hosting; Valley of the Sun is also
interested.

Manaker‑ of Nature's Coast K WGC‑ said that their 1st koi
show
was a success; at a nursery; had 10 tanks and around 50 koi. The Grand champion
was a kohaku of Johnnie Foster's. Chris Schroettinger, of Central Florida KC,
said that they had their Seminar at Volusia Agriculture Center on water quality
and fish health by Dr. Allan Riggs. Norbun Watson, of Warner Robins said that
their pond tour went very well; had 150‑200 attendees; got good radio
coverage for it and also had cable stations and newspapers. They are giving
proceeds to the Red Cross relief fund. Jackie Welch, of Oklahoma KC, said that
a number of them are going to the San Antonio show this weekend. Will have
elections at their next meeting. Debby T. Young, of Southern Arizona KC said
that they are getting ready for their show on Nov. 9th getting more new tanks.
Carl Fridenstine, of Santa Clara Valley Ko , said that they are going to put on
a koi show in March at the San Francisco Flower Show at the Cow Palace. They
got many new members from their pond tour; election of officers is Oct. 12 th
Holiday banquet is Nov. 16th at a local restaurant in San Jose area. Shiela
Jackson, of San Francisco Bay KC, said that all committee heads for the Seminar
have been appointed except the raffle committee. Sent registration form to
Cindy Graham; will get pricing structure to Carl Caddies. Peter Enfield, of
Pacific Wonderland ' said that they had a demonstration on how to build a bead
filter out of a 55 gal. Barrel on its side at their last meeting. He created a
strainer in his vortex using 64 micron mesh and a pulsating sprinkler he
modified. He has written an article for KOI USA; planning Xmas party; had election
of officers.

Carole: Florida Koi& Water Garden Society just had their second anniversary
part at the home of Lillian Wolfe and John Calder. There were over 60 people
present for the barbecue, door prizes and Aqua Doc and Blackwater brought some
beautiful fish and sold them at great prices. Jan Jordan, of Mid‑Columbia
K&PC said that they have picked the members that will be their KHA's (Jan
White, Carmen Stafford, plus two alternates ‑. Officers for the coming
year, 2002, are running unopposed: Ron Boedeker, President, Bill White, Vice
President, Harland Borcherding, Treasurer, and Phyliss Hirschel, Secretary. Jan
will serve as Past President on Board. They had a very successful Pond Tour the
first part of September; tickets were a sell out. Richard Adema, of Canada KC
said that they had a koi sale/auction (mainly goldfish) on Sept. 15th of
approximately 200 fish. They are getting ready to shut down ponds. Had a
meeting on which plants need to be taken out of the ponds over winter. Planning
for their Xmas dinner; elections in Nov. Larry Bortner, of Chesapeake &
Potomac, said that most of their members have dropped out. He is working hard
on keeping the club going; someone expressed interest over the internet. Ile
Southwest Koi & Pond Association just had a meeting where Mike Martinez
gave a very informative presentation on water quality. Elections are coming up;
planning for annual holiday social gathering that will be held at the State
Line Restaurant. They will have their November meeting at the El Paso Zoo. So
Cal Koi Club recently went to the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific; tour was
incredible, especially the sea otters and sea horses. They also took a behind
the scenes tour in which they saw the quarantine tanks for new fish as well as
the filtration system for the entire aquarium.
Written
report submitted by Doug: All koi clubs Doug contacted extended their heartfelt
sympathy for those who lost their lives or loved ones on Sept. 11, 200 1. Gary
Chin, of Camellia KC, said Dr. William Cox of the DFG gave an excellent update
on the status of the local koi virus. They recommend other clubs in California
have Dr. Cox come and speak on this subject. Larry Gill and Gary Chan will
speak about "How to Buy Koi" at the October meeting. This program
will include live koi to be selected and distributed to club members for a
selection and growing contest. Their club is working hard with the San
Francisco KC on the 2002 AKCA Seminar. Art Lembke reports Mid Atlantic KC is
settling down following Koi America which brought the club 100 new members and
made money. Koi America had nearly 300 fish with an attendance of over 40000
people. Club local Chapters are having their fall picnics now and are enjoying
a deserved rest. Koi America vendors were very pleased with the results. The
Olympic KC reports their clubs Sept. luncheon with Kalhanie KC at the home of
Leon Lopez. Was a real Jamaican cuisine delight. The club newsletter included a
list of poisonous plants to have around a koi pond, basics of biological
filtration and a discussion on stocking levels for healthy ponds. The October
meeting will be held at Ed and Ann Fujimoto's in Kingston. Ray Jordan, of Texas
K&GFS, said they were busy preparing for their koi show October 13/14 and
expected a good turnout. This is the first time they have sold out all of their
tanks for an English November Meeting; their club is taking a field trip to
Brett's Koi Farm to watch the tosai (I year baby koi) harvest and culling. Ron
Goforth, of the Moto Kars Koi Kai club in Texas, reports they added 100
Japanese koi terms including the ability to hear the proper Japanese
pronunciation onto their website MKK.com.org which is linked to the AKCA
website. They plan to add more terms later. David Smothers, of North Carolina
K&WGS, reports their Sept. meeting was a tour of a members home and gardens
with a discussion on quarantine time and procedures for new koi. Their members
are looking forward to the koi show in Charlotte in November. They are glad to
see their club news in the KOI USA Club section and feel it will bring new
members to their club. Ginger Duncan, of Las Pampas K&WGS, in Texas told me
their club of 18 families used profits from a recent pond tour to purchase eye
glasses for a needy, little girl and were about to use the remaining profits to
help the elderly with medicine and food. What a charitable thing to do and an
inspiration for all of us. Their club also built a water fountain for their
local college last year. Susan Kandt, of Kansas Pond Society, reports their
members lost no koi this spring and summer following some losses during the
last hard winter due to improper care. They will have another discussion about
proper koi and pond care going into this winter. Their membership is growing
and they are already starting to plan for the Wichita Garden Show in Feb/Mar.
Bob Passovoy, of Northern Midwest ZNA, thanked AKCA for the clarification on
the bylaws regarding Dealer participation in clubs. It was very timely because
October is election month for club President, Secretary, Exec Committee
Chairperson and for 4 Board Members for their club. Doug will contact the
following clubs next month: Ventura KC, Tulsa Koi Society. Doug tried but was
unable to get return messages from the following clubs: Lone Star KC Austin KC
& Austin Pond Society, Blue Water Pond Club, Mendocino Coast, &
Klahanie KC. Better luck next month.
Written
report for Bob & Joan Finnegan : Charles Phelps, of Greater Louisville,
said that everything is OK; Bob & Joan will Judge their koi show next May.
Lester Berkow, of Tropical KC, said that everything was OK. Ron Bain, of Forest
City Pond Club said that they have 68 members and are getting more each
meeting. Mona Coleman, of Northern Nevada said that their club is very active.
On Oct. 13th their club will go to Monterey, CA for 2 days to visit the Big
Fish Aquarium and to take in the sights. They will have a Seminar with Dr.
Johnson as their guest speaker/teacher. This will take place next spring. So
Cal Koi Club went to the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific. Last month we had
a meeting at a members house; he has a 70,000 gal. Koi pond in Newport Beach as
well as a vineyard. Frank LePome, of Sierra KC said that everything is OK. Some
club member's are going koi shopping in the hill in Japan (Oct. 21‑27).
Bob tried but was unable to get the following clubs: Rocky Mountain KC, No.
Florida KC, Northwest K&GF and Indiana KC.
Written
report submitted by Joyce: Robin Scott, of Atlanta KC ' said that their club
has rescheduled their show to the last week in October. They h very successful
pond tour on the first Saturday of each of the months of May, June, July and
August. Ten to fifteen ponds were featured each time and it ranged over a 12
county area, so they were able to view everything from 300 to 40,000 gallons.
Carol Jones, of Florida West Coast, said that she has been getting the minutes;
have also received their health guides. Vergil Hettick, of ZNA So California,
said that the big auction at CSULS Japanese Garden will be on Nov. 18th Visitors/volunteers
are welcome from 8:00 a.m.
and the auction begins at 12:00 p.m. Once again they
will have a wide range of koi from the
Garden pond, as well as member's koi. All fish will
be identified as to the source at the beginning
of the bidding. There will be no minimum bids. John
Dixon, of Prince George, said that not all
their club members agree with the increased AKCA
dues. John will talk to the members when he
returns from Vancouver. John Olsen, D.V.M., of Tampa
Ba , said that elections were held
recently and Mike Singleton is the new AKCA
Director. They had their first Koi and Vendor
show. It was initially going to be a club show but
was opened up to other participants and
publicized to the public as planned, to help
generate new members. It was held at the ranch of one
of the members, Richard Schmidt. There were
approximately 250 attendees, 87 fish entrants
placed into 15 categories. The Grand Champion was a
Showa, size 3, owned by Ruth Nichols,
and will be the club's entrant for AKCA Koi of the
Year 2002. Judges were Dr. Lester Berkow,
AKCA Judge, and Joe White, ‑ AKCA Candidate
Judge. They collected $250 that will be sent to a
relief fund for the victims of the World Trade
Center. Their web site has been revitalized and can
be found at www.tampabaykooi.org Jack Chang wanted everyone to know the All
Japan
Koi Show (ZEN) is Nov. 3rd and 4th. It will be held
at the Tokyo Dome

Berger, of Greater Boston Koi Keepers, said newcomers met at his house in
October and traded stories and pond pictures and discussed pond building. Many
had heron problems this year so anti‑predator tactics were a common goal.
Barry is also participating in the KHA program with AKCA. Shelly Klinger, of
Central Illinois Water Gardeners, said they will be holding elections on
Saturday, October 13th Prior to the election, Tim Getz, from Getz Greenhouse in
Eureka, Ill, will speak on closing down ponds for the winter. Alice Ames, of
Santa Fe Pond Society & Koi Appreciation Club, said they are going to the
Texas Fancy Goldfish and Koi show and will bring their first friendship award
to hand out. Judy Endsley, of Ohio Koi Club, said their August meeting was a
picnic at Bill and Marge Grovers where they honored their Koi Person of the
Year, Hollie Suggs and the owners of the Koi of the Year, Ron and MaryAnn
Bergman. Donna Woods, of the Gulf Coast Koi Society sent their membership list
in so they could receive the AKCA Health Guides for their members. Ledeane
Paden, of Prairieland Pond (a new AKCA club with 161 members) said their next
meeting will be an annual cookout and they have 220 sign ups. This summer they
helped design and build a pond water features at the Glen Oak Zoo in Peoria,
111. Darlene Jennings, of Mid‑Michigan P&WGC said their August
meeting was the hottest they ever had, but their hosts Mike and Diane Husted
provided plenty of cold drinks to help them through the meeting. Cathy Barnard,
of the Gulf Coast Koi Society said she and Donna Wood will enter koi at the
Atlanta show. They hope to get the Grand Champion trophy.
