paid. The CPA has been working on our

The KOI USA staff continues to do a good job tightening their collection
of advertising payments from vendors.

$1,823 that is more than 90 days late.
None of the vendors more than 90 days late are in the Nov/Dec issue of

COMMITTEE REPORTS:
v
SCIENTIFIC: Spike handed out his monthy
KHA Program report. Stated that Burt

Professor Strange’s Fish Physiology site.
v
PUBLICATION: Started by hearing a proposal
for the KOI USA website by Gerry Marinelli; handouts of his proposal were
passed around. Questions were fielded
by Gerry after his presentation. Key
question was - How do we get people to use our website and how would they move
us up on the various search engines.
After Gerry’s presentation there was discussion by the Board as to what
we want on the website (teasers about future articles; calendar of events, etc.) It
Page 2
v
was
felt that we should limit graphics due to the amount of time it takes to
download these. It was suggested that
Spike, Heinz and Debby Young look at our various proposals and come up with
their own questions of the people we interview.
It was decided to have a
special meeting, Tues. October 21st
@ 7 pm to interview two more
people regarding the website.
Suggested that we either get a CD of their web pages or colored copy of their web pages prior to meeting.
Continued talking about website after Gerry
left. Bob stated that he feels we’re
wasting our money by
sending out two complimentary issues of KOI
USA. Also stated that we have a lot of
old past issues.

plus the cost of shipping. Motion by
Burt, 2nd by

REPRESENTATIVE CONTACTS:
o Written report submitted by Doug: Judy Schwartz, of Austin Pond Society, reports recent club meeting programs have included lectures on pond landscaping and lighting; water lilies; and pond water quality. They plan a fall social on Oct. 26 instead of a Holiday Party this year. Their club continues to maintain the ponds at Mayfield Park and they teach kids about the pond at Blanton Elementary School. They will hold Officer elections in November and are already planning next years pond tour which will be their 10th. Bob Slack, of Blue Water Pond Club, reports they held a 2 day pond tour including a night time tour in August. Their club membership is increasing. Recent meeting programs included lectures on plants and water lilies and Steve Fews, a local koi breeder, will speak on Fish Health in the Spring. Next months meeting will be the last meeting before the winter break. Their members had some fish kills due to the harsh winter last year so more members are bringing in their koi this year. Gene Stogsdill, of First Coast K/G & WGC, reports this is the first anniversary of their new club. They will hold a Pond Tour on 10/25 and have held 2 auctions this year so far. They have purchased 6 show tanks and hope to purchase 6 more in time to hold their first koi show in the Spring next year. They have been studying Koi Classification at their monthly meetings. Paul Samson, of Idaho Water Garden Society, reports they just held their 10th Annual Koi Show and it was a success. On Oct. 19, they will hold a fundraiser on behalf of a club member with leukemia. Their club will host the PNKCA Convention in June in Boise next year. They placed a KOI USA advertisement in their Show booklet this year for free because they support the magazine. They also have 13 business sponsors who pay $49 per year to sponsor the club and display a plaque in their place of business. Sponsors get free advertising in the club newsletter and the club creates a discount booklet for club members with business discounts from these sponsors from 10-20 percent for club members depending on the sponsor. It is a win-win for the club and for the sponsor. Virginia Joiner, of Lone Star ZNA KC, reports they have gone back to lectures on KOI BASICS at club meetings to educate the many new club members. Vicky Burnley, of University of Georgia and researcher for Neocide 3 bacterial dip, will speak at their November meeting. Their club is trying to decide if they want to hold a koi show next year or not. Their club plans a trip to Purdin Koi farm also in November. Dr. James Hooper, of Mendocino Coast KC, is just finishing the 6th pond on his property. Their club meetings are now being held at various members homes instead of a meeting hall to add more interest to the meetings. They will hold election of Officers this month. Dr. Hooper looks forward to the AKCA Seminar in Honolulu next year and still thinks fondly of the AKCA Seminar held in Portland many years ago for the beauty of the location. Geoffrey Huntley, of Piedmont K&WGS, reports their koi show will be the second weekend in November. They will hold club Officer elections at their annual Fall Festival Oct. 25th that will include a bonfire and pumpkin carving contest. Timothy Czech, of Pioneer Valley WG&KC, reports their last meeting was at a home with a
Page 3
o pond with a dragon watching over the pond and a mystical gas flame burning in the center of the pond. There were many other interesting landscaping surprises at this pond owned by Paul & Helen Menard. The guest speaker was Stacey Chapley, of Chapley Gardens, who spoke about
filters, UV and other necessary items a serious koi keeper will need. They also discussed
getting your pond ready for winter and keeping your koi healthy during winter. They also
held a plant exchange at a recent meeting. They are already preparing for club Koi Person of
the Year and club Koi of the Year award selections for the 2003/04 year. Doug will miss the

AKCA. Doug tried to contact the following clubs with no response: Las Pampas K&WGS;
Mid Atlantic Koi Club; Olympic KC; Tulsa Koi Society; and Ventura Koi Club .
o Written report submitted by Bruno: Koi Kichi & WGC reports that in September they went on a field trip to Japan Koi Online. Mr. Taro Kodama was gracious enough to offer his facility to their club members. He has done a lot of remodeling; added two greenhouses in which all shipments from Japan go directly into his quarantine. His quarantine procedures are very strict; he has pathogen free koi in every tank in his greenhouses. He also sends one koi from every shipment to the University to be tested for KHV. Between quarantine and lab testing his new arrivals are at his facility for a minimum of four weeks before they are ready for the public to purchase.
