recommendation/voting to follow (written material to be provided to Board prior
to meeting)
The

clubs.
v
MINUTES:
Motion: To approve the minutes of August 8, 2003 with the following
correction: page 2 should
say advertisers instead of vendors. Motion by Lisa, 2nd by
Joyce. Approved
v
AUGUST FINANCIAL STATEMENT/FINANCE COMMITTEE:
Doug handed out the monthly financial report. The
budget for the 2004 Seminar in Hawaii has been approved showing a predicted
$13,700 profit plus minor registration fee increases since the budget was
approved. Additional expenses continue
to hit the 2003 Seminar profit that is now down to $24,084 ($9,634 Host club
share). Atlanta is having trouble
getting the $5,000 refund from the bus company. This is delaying payment of the Host club share. Remainder of Seminar notebooks and pins have
not been shipped to Doug as yet. Brenda
and Charlie Atwell sold 45 KOI USA subscriptions and $900 in bookstore items at
Koi America (Great job!!) and could have sold many more Bookstore items if we
had shipped them. Brenda took the bookstore items (KOI USA magazines
were sent to her ahead of time) remaining from the Atlanta Seminar to Koi
America and sold almost all of them.
AKCA paid for gasoline plus room for 4 nights. 15% bookstore commission was refused by Brenda.
The investment account lost $400 value in July and
gained $1720 value in August to $263,263 current value. One $10,00 certificate was rolled over in
August. The CPA has not started working
on our financial review or taxes in the month since I gave the material to
him. I requested him to do it
soon. AKCA funds 7 postal machines, 3
of which we rent directly. PCS has 3
postal machines we fund and Transamerica has one machine we fund.
He finally
straightened out the postal machines, coordinated the correct paperwork with
the 3
machines we rent and got a $400 check transferred
from a machine we no longer own to Joan’s
machine.
Doug needs to create a formal contract for Connie for Accounts
Receivable since this
was not done earlier. Kim has agreed to do a physical inventory of the bookstore in
September
for $22.50 per hour.
Page 2
The KOI USA staff has done a great job tightening
their collection of late advertising payments from advertisers. As of September 3rd we only have
$425 that is 61-90 days late and $2,438 that is more than 90 days late. 10 out of 44 advertisers have debts over 60
days old. Most of these 10 are no
longer advertising in KOI USA. Doug is
now using the Union Bank checking account as an overflow account to keep the
Bank of America balance below $100,000 for insurance purposes.
Doug requested Board pre-approval to reorder an
additional 120 St. Erne books when our stock is reduced from 100 to 10
books. Nick has offered AKCA the same
reduced price we paid for the initial 100 book order if we order in quantities
of 120. Motion: to sell the
St. Erne Book to clubs and dealers who order 5 or more books at a cost of
$50. Motion by Burt, 2nd by
Doug. Approved.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
v
SCIENTIFIC: Spike has CD’s on fish Physiology, from the class he took, that he is
selling. He stated that KHA grads have
to sign that they understand the laws of their states; upon signature they will
get their certificates. He got Sandy
Yosha’s contract negiotated; to be signed by Joan. $7,300 as well as a request of up to $1,200 assistance to go to
the Hawaii Seminar to do the wet lab.
Burt is still working on the Hold Harmless with the lawyer. Motion: To approve Sandy Yosha’s contract, as
written, to include $7,300 maximum plus travel to 3 KHA labs and $1,200
expenses for the Hawaii Seminar. Motion
by Spike, 2nd by Joyce. Approved.
v
PUBLICATION: Joyce stated that their last
meeting was held on Sept. 2nd; Connie reported her collections. Doug included a list of the clubs in his
report. It gave the number of members
in each club, the number of subscribers in each club and the percentage of
subscribers to the total club membership.
It appears that Inland Empire Water Garden and Koi Society, in Spokane,
had 100%. Inland Koi Society, of
Riverside, had 77%. ZNA Northern
Midwest Chapter (74%) and Camellia Koi Club (83%) were right up there as
well. They discussed Mike Oleksak and a
possible KOI USA website. We need to
boost our marketing efforts and alternatives to building circulation. They would like to involve the clubs in the
promotion. Tom produced an inventory of
the distribution of magazines. They
have established a new policy of advertising in Koi Show and pond tour
books. Koi USA agrees to purchase an ad
at a rate of up to $100 for either Koi Show or Pond Tour per year. Doris Poppe will not be able to write the
What’s New column any more. Joyce has
asked David Jones, of the Dallas Koi Kichi Club, to take over that column and
he has accepted.
Joyce announced that she is retiring from the job of
Editor, effective December 31, 2003.
She is asking the Board to approve Ed Salinas to replace her; she is
willing to help him become familiar with the position. Motion: To approve Ed Salinas as Editor of KOI USA,
to replace Joyce Glenn upon her retirement.
Motion by Burt, 2nd by Carl.
Approved.
Mike Oleksak, a website developer, gave his
presentation. He stated that the main
function of our
website should be to generate subscriptions. He also said that advertisers could sponsor
pages. Doug
stated that he felt that we should use a stepped
approach and not start with advertisers.
Burt stated
concerns about detracting from our magazine and
books/bookstore; suggested doing ticklers of past
magazines.
There was further discussion on advertisers on the website. Mike felt that the website
would be about 100 pages; quoted us on doing initial
website as well as a monthly fee. Burt
also had a
website developer look at doing the KOI
USAwebsite. However, she needed more
info on what we
wanted before she could give us a quote. He will have her proposal next month and let
us know, ahead
Page 3
of the meeting, where we can look at websites she
has designed. Carole also has someone
in mind;
will have
something next month and let us know where we can look at websites he has
designed.
Tom stated that Joel Burkhardt had been promised 50
of the Judging & Buying books; it was found
that Tom had promised him these without prior Board
approval; approximate cost is $750.
Discussion.
Motion: To approve
giving Joel Burkhardt, one time only, 50 Judging & Buying books & all
authors
of the book to receive one copy of the book. Motion by Burt, 2nd by Carl. Approved; 2 abstain, 2
no’s.
v
MEMBERSHIP: Doug stated that we have
received dues checks from 99 clubs with 39 rosters provided. We have gotten no response from Nanaimo Fish
Pond & Water Garden Assoc. and Saline County Water Garden Club. Las Vegas Koi Club applied to be an AKCA
member club (they have replaced Desert Koi Club of So. Nevada). Motion: To accept Las Vegas Koi Club as a member
club. Motion by Doug, 2nd by
Burt. Approved. A second club also sent in an application,
check, etc.: Placid Pond & Koi
Association (from Illinois). Motion: To accept Placid Pond & Koi Assoc. as an
AKCA member club. Motion by Doug, 2nd
by Bob. Approved. Club kit updates have been sent to all
member clubs. Doug handed out a matrix
comparing club rosters with number of member subscriptions to KOI USA. 22% of AKCA members subscribe to KOI USA
while 36% of KOI USA subscribers are club members. However, in going over the matrix. Discussion on how to get increased subscriptions from club members.

meeting.
REPRESENTATIVE CONTACTS:
o Written report submitted by Doug: Matt Healey, of Austin KC, reports their club is now holding their monthly meetings in a business conference room. The advantage is a consistent, central location; the drawback is not seeing people’s ponds. Janet Vukovich, of Central Calif. KC, reports they are busy making arrangements for their Annual Koi Show on Oct. 22/23 with Dr. Lester Berkow as Head Judge. Doug Gilbert, of Dai Ichi KC, reports they had a warm, dry, quiet summer. A couple of their club members have been developing microscreen filters which provides lots of debate at club meetings on which design is best. Some club members have ventured south to attend koi shows in Washington state and have returned very inspired by what they have observed. Desert KC, of So. Nevada, has ceased to be an active club and new members have applied for AKCA membership as a new club. Leon Lopez, of Klahanie Koi Club, says they do plan to pay their AKCA dues but not much is happening with the club. Pamela Francis, of Michigan Koi & Pond Club-SE Chapter, reports they held a very successful Pond Tour in July with 9 local ponds attended by 730 people. They also held a Pond Tour and Progressive dinner for club members only. Their next event will be at “A Master Gardeners Oasis (and pond)” owned by Mick and Cathy Hodgson. Moto Kara Koi Kai reports their August meeting was a personally, guided tour of the Aquarium in Downtown Houston by the Manager including the inner workings of the Aquarium. One of the tanks contained fish supplied by Brett Rowley but they were not koi. The tour was very memorable. Bob Dendy, of Nashville Pond Society, reports they held a picnic for their season opener in April followed by fish sales in May and June and a plant swap in July. The August meeting was focused with discussions on various pond and koi topics. They plan a “Parade of Ponds” tour Sept. 23/24 and a season finale BBQ and picnic in October. Geoffrey Huntley, of Piedmont K&WGS, reports their club held a social in August and will have Maureen Riley, a local horticulturist and radio gardening talk show host speak at their September club meeting. Their October meeting is a fall festival with pumpkin carving competition, plant exchange, good koi show in Charlotte and will be Nov 6-8; this will be their 6th year for the show. Tim Czech, of Pioneer Valley WG&KC, reports they held a pond tour instead of a club meeting in July. The August meeting discussion focused on what went well or could be improved for next years pond tour. This years pond tour included some professionally built ponds with the builders present to answer questions and to advertise their talents. This provided a mixture of good and not so good results depending on how aggressive the dealer was in pushing their services. A Committee will evaluate this issue for next years pond tour. The speaker at their last meeting was Vinnie Norman who spoke on invasive aquatic plants not native to the Northeast. This invasion of plants not native to the Northeast is a problem in public lakes and rivers.
Doug tried to contact the following clubs with no response: Austin Pond Society; Blue Water Pond
Club; First Coast K/G & WGC; Idaho Water Garden Society; Lone Star ZNA KC; Mid AtlanticKoi Club; and, Olympic KC.
o Written report submitted by Bruno: Koi Kichi & WGC reports that Ken Tran, Tom Holder, and Nancy Morales have been working on getting Dr. Erik Johnson to come and give a lecture on koi health. Dr. Johnson has agreed to come; no date set yet. Eastern Nishikigoi will host this event with Koi Care Kennel and Koi Kichi & WGC. They will do a luncheon for this event and have vendors. All koi hobbyists will be invited to attend this event. Members of all koi clubs will
Page 5
have priority on buying tickets to attend this event. This will be the first time Dr. Johnson has ever spoken at a Southern California dealer.
o Written report submitted by Larry: Sandy Fisher, of Mid-Michigan Pond & Water Garden Society, said they are winding down for the year. Membership continues to grow and they are planning the 2004 Pond Tour. Their Club has been receiving donations from a local Community Share Program through a local grocery store. If community Share is available in other areas, they recommend that clubs take the opportunity to grow your grant funds. Fritz Jetten, of the Gulf Coast Koi Society, said on August 23rd Dr. Erik Johnson, of www.kloivet.com fame, drove down from Atlanta, Georgia to Mobile, Alabama. One of their members had lost some fish to the Koi Herpes Virus and had contacted Dr. Johnson for help. He offered to pick up the surviving koi, which are likely to be KHV carriers, for further study in his laboratory. Michael Jackson, of West Plains Water Garden Society, said it is a slow time of the year for them. Their Club meeting is Sept. 9th to discuss the upcoming plant sale and they will also be discussing topics for their upcoming seminar at the next March Home Builders Show that they help with. Ledean Paden, of Prairieland Koi & Pond Society, said they completed the Lutheran home retirement center’s pond last month. Great turnout for the meeting and many new members joined the Society. Hilda Adams, of St. Louis Water Gardening Society, said their last meeting was the annual dinner meeting held at the Jewel Box in Forest Park. The lily ponds surrounding the recently restored glass structure is the Society’s community project. What an evening! The ponds were in full bloom with day blooming lilies for the opening of the evening and the night blooming lilies to see them off. Hilda said she is pushing Koi USA at every meeting. Shelly Klinger, from Central Illinois Water Gardeners, said their meeting was on September 13th at the home of Vice-President Jackie Tridle in Normal, Ill. Tim Getz, of Getz Greenhouse in Eureka, will speak about shutting your pond down for the winter. Annual elections of officers will be conducted in October

ready for next years show. Bob tried

number); No. Nevada; Northwest Koi & Goldfish; Rocky
Mountain Koi Club;West Tennessee; & West Garden Club of So. Texas.
o Written
report submitted by Carl Caddies:
Oregon Koi & Watergarden Society reports their August
Club meeting was held at the Mason’s along with a Pig BBQ/family reunion. Old
Time Fiddlers provided the music and there was plenty of room for the kids to
run. The Mason’s 13,000 gallon pond had
water for the first time and its four foot waterfall and stream feature were
looking good. The pond is still in the
finishing stages. Their fish are still
in their swimming pool near the house.
Randy Brock, President, thanked all those who helped with the successful
show and commented that Judge Garry chin had said that the quality of the fish
had improved from last year. The club

Both judges were surprised at the high quality of the entries. The trade show was also larger this year and
all 15 booths in a 40 by 80 foot tent were occupied. Grand Champion was won by Dick and Brenda Thomas, of Lafayette,
Indiana. Reserve Grand Champion went to
Bay Bateman, and both mature champion and the AKCA award went to Bob
Brudd. A special award called “the
Millie” was awarded to Nick and Debbie Leschuck, the co-chairpersons of the
show. Millie Brudd, who passed away in
April of this year, loved ginrin fish and the special award was “for fish that
sparkle.”
o
Written
report submitted by Joyce: Leroy Taba, of Hawaii Goldfish &
Carp Association, reports that Dr. Kim Lee is working on the Kawaii
pond tour. Dr. Lee and Leroy are
coordinating food and buses for the Hawaiian Seminar and it all sounds
delicious! Remember to get your
reservations in early! Dan Morgan, of Washington
Koi & WGS, said their show was wonderful. There were more entries this year. People from British Columbia, Canada, brought fish knowing they
will have to be quarantined for a month before they can go home. Len Brown, of Tampa Bay, said
they were not impacted by the storms.
They are getting ready for their third annual koi show on September 28th. The All Florida Show will be in
Orlando. Fred McCorkle, of Florida
West Coast Koi & WGC, thought the figures of club members and
subscribers sounded more like last year.
They have lost several of the koi people over the last year, so he is
sure the subscription numbers are down also.
Their club is building a pond demo tank to take to nearby koi shows and
possible AFKAPS. They hope to use this
tank to increase interest in ponding. A
lot of the members showed interest in going to Hawaii to attend the
Seminar. Jennifer Hollington, of Showa
Club, said they are going to have an expo at the Charleston aquarium
next month. They are keeping all fingers
crossed that Hurricane Isabel doesn’t come on shore and do damage before
then. David Marier, of Atlanta

held in October.
o Written report submitted by Phil Hunter:

working with the other Florida koi clubs on the 2004 “All
Florida Koi Show.” Becky Maier, of

the August meeting was held at the home of
Don and Pat Kolesar. Becky
Maier gave a brief report on the presentation she made to the
Cincinnati Water Garden Club.

and ideas. Several
members of the club planned to attend Koi America 2003 in Virginia, and there
will be a report back at
the September meeting. The following
clubs had no report this month:
Capitol Area Koi & Water Garden Club and the Springfield Water Garden
Society.
o Written report submitted by Ed Salinas:
Claudia Brownlie, of the Koi Club of Middle Tennessee,
said that she sent a 2nd e-mail to Debby Young asking to be included
on AKCA “Affiliated Club” web page. She
doesn’t know the protocol of how she gets advised about a new club’s
acceptance. Claudia has successfully
graduated from the KHA program. The
club held their 2nd meeting (July) at the home of Gene & Barbara
Tidwell; they have a beautiful 5,600 gallon dedicated koi pond. Gene gave an excellent presentation on his
custom made bead filters, of which he’s built and installed over 15 to
date. Barbara was elected “New Member
Chairperson” to keep in contact with guests & other interested parties and
to try to recruit them into members. No
meeting for August. Vice President, Kay
Rice, will lead the September meeting, teaching about scraping of fish &
use of microscope.
