Ř
The
meeting was called to order by Chairperson Joan Finnegan @ 7:00 pm. We have 103 clubs.
v
MINUTES:
Motion: To approve the minutes of August 13th with the following
correction: 2007 Seminar to be hosted
by Valley of the Sun club and jointly hosted by them and Southern Arizona Koi
Association. Motion by Joyce, 2nd
by Larry. Approved.
v
AUGUST FINANCIAL STATEMENT/FINANCE COMMITTEE:
Doug reported that the current net profit for the
2004 Seminar is $17,524 with all known bills paid; host club share is
$7,010. A Finance Committee meeting was
held with the following results: (1) Fidelity Mutual fund penalties were
identified and decision made with help of Jim Reilly to leave the fund for the
next year or so to let the penalties expire and not transfer to another
Fidelity fund or sell; (2) Annual fiscal plan was reviewed for bank and
investment accounts; (3) $40,000 transferred from Union Bank to B of A and will
expect to do so again in January, 2005; (4) Expect $50,000 will have to be
moved from bank accounts into investments next June; (5) $40,000 moved from Money
market into a 18 month CD; (6) $40,000 moved from Money market into a 36 month
CD; (7) $36,000 in Corporate Bonds will come due thru end of 2004; (8) continue
to work secure website thru Echo for both Bookstore and Seminar registration
accounts. 2.29% fee expected from Echo
plus $14.95 per account per month; and (9) CPA Review this year will be a
Compilation with footnotes plus a Management letter and will cost $2,200. Doug met with both CPAs to work taxes, annual
review and resolved issues on bookkeeping in Quickbooks. Errors were made in last year’s annual
review and taxes 2 & 3 years ago according to our CPAs. This is driving up the cost this year to
clean up our annual review. The
problems are the selection between cash
or accrued basis. There was also one
mismatch in data from the old Quickbooks to the new Quickbooks file last year
not caught in the annual review. Mandy
completed the annual bookstore inventory.
There are 59 net items less than Quickbooks predicted but most items
quantities increased rather than lost quantity so the inventory one of the
years is in question. Doug doesn’t know
what to make of the data. We lost 113
Atlanta pins, 93 Health Guides, 76 Pond Guides but gained 27 PKK1, and 20+ of
most pins. We have a list of damaged
items including 32 Koi ID posters.
Quickbooks has been adjusted to the new inventory quantities. Mandy turned in her 60 day notice; have to
identify a new Bookstore person quickly so he/she can be trained. Mandy said she did not have the time anymore
to do the work. Harlan indicated that
his temp secretary would be an ideal person as she is already on site; he will
check with her and report back to Doug.
Year to date net income is $10,047.15.
Doug also reported that KOI USA advertising brings in about $50,000 per
issue. Motion: To accept the financial report. Motion by Lisa, 2nd by
Joyce. Approved.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
v SCIENTIFIC: Spike stated that he received an email from Andy Goodwin regarding being behind on his deadlines. Andy stated that they have acquired a new PCR instrument that will run
Page 2
v a super-sensitive assay recently developed by Dr. Hedrick; has taken a little time to acquire all of the needed chemicals and to make sure that Dr. Hedrick’s assay worked in their hands. In a telecom with Bran Ritchie, Bran stated that they are closing in on a serology test that will screen for fish that have been exposed to KHV and have developed antibodies that are still present in the fish. He thinks the test will be ready soon and people will be able to start sending samples (blood plasma) to his lab for testing. Bran estimates that lab testing of blood plasma will be in the $20 range (if plasma is sent). This promises to be our best test yet to determine if a given fish (or a given lot of fish, if sampling is done) has been previously exposed to KHV. It can also be used in research to prove that fish are survivors when looking for all the other things we need to determine about this virus, e.g., parameters to cause the virus to come out of dormancy and again become infective. Spike stated that about ˝ of the KHA Program’s goals were missed including the expense report. Joan stated that Jim Reilly didn’t have a report this month for the AKCA-KHV Project. It was also stated that the CPAs insist that we have duplicate bank statements; can’t have a separate set of books.
v PUBLICATION: Ed handed out a draft Business Plan for KOI USA that we went over item by item; recommendations were made. He also stated that we need a features editor. Discussion of photos, particularly photos that go on the cover of the magazine. It was suggested that we develop a list of people who are great photographers who know how to properly photograph koi and possibly have a referral service to clubs of individuals in or around their area. Marketing was discussed; Joan’s daughter would be willing to do research on past subscribers to see why they are no longer taking our magazine and report back. Discussion on developing a survey; are written surveys effective?? Need to determine why we aren’t keeping our subscribers and why we are keeping them. We also need a plan for what we want on the website. Discussion about getting our magazine placed at dealers. Perhaps we develop a poster to be placed at dealers and offer some incentives to dealers who get people to subscribe to the magazine.
v
MEMBERSHIP: Doug stated that we currently
have 103 member clubs. October 1st
will be the final date for clubs to renew their membership.
v
JUDGING: Bob said that judging is going smooth. Tampa, Fla. Will have their show in spite of
the hurricanes. They will be working on
next years koi shows.
v
SPEAKER’S GRANT:
No report.
v
GUIDES: No report.
v
INSURANCE: Burt stated that
directors/officers errors & omissions policy was paid for the year.
.
SEMINAR REPORTS:
v
2005 TULSA SEMINAR: Ed stated that they got a
partial budget in to Doug.
v
2006 NIAGARA SEMINAR: Doug
reports they are on track and on schedule.
v 2007 Seminar: We
don’t have hotel information as yet; there are a number of hotels that can meet
our needs.
Page 3
v Future Seminars: Piedmont and No. Florida would like us to keep their proposal
for the 2008 Seminar. Las Vegas and San
Diego would like us to keep their proposal for the 2009 Seminar. Please note that we are open to other
proposals for both years; contact either Burt or Doug. It was also agreed by the board that we
would vote on a host club for each Seminar in June when the Seminar date is
three years away; the 2008 Seminar host club will be chosen June of 2005.
REPRESENTATIVE CONTACTS:
o
Written report submitted by Doug: Janet Vukovich, of Central Calif. KC,
reports they are planning their koi show Oct 9/10 at the Fig Garden
Village. Judges will be Art &
Nicole Lembke and Debby Hester. The
show will include a public raffle of items.
John Hawley, of First Coast K&WG Club, reports their
club luau was a success and they are continuing to plan for their 1st
Koi Show October 16th.
Virginia Joiner, of Lone Star ZNA KC, reports their pond
tour was a great success with 24+ ponds.
Their club has had a very active set of lectures this year so far. Their last meeting was a Gatsby party, just
for fun. At the next meeting they will
discuss a potential koi show next spring and also KHV issues. No problem with any ponds in Houston. Dr. James Hooper, of Mendocino Coast
Koi Club, reports they are working on getting a speaker to use their
AKCA Speakers Grant. Dr. Hooper will
show a video he took while at the Hawaii AKCA Seminar to club members at the next
meeting. The club had a local pond tour
in July. Dr. Hooper had a trout pond
wiped out with a trout disease he suspects was carried in by a blue heron that
visited 2 weeks earlier. He asks if
AKCA would try to convince Fish & Game that herons are spreading KHV and no
longer should be considered endangered and against the law to kill. Dr. Hooper also suggests AKCA consider late
Sept. or early Oct. for the AKCA Seminar to obtain better weather since many
schools are year round anyway. Pam
Francis, of Michigan Koi & Pond Club-SE, reports their July
meeting featured a presentation on Pond Design 101. This lecture was scheduled due to new club members being obtained
during their pond tour in June. They
videotaped this lecture and will have it available for future use. 50 club members attended a mini
tour/progressive dinner in August. At
each pond, the owners explained their pond systems and how they were built. Following dinner they visited a member’s
pond under construction. Their
September meeting is scheduled to discuss pumps, filtration and pond closing
followed by a pot luck supper. The
October meeting is the fall social with nature and garden tour and harvest
dinner and their November meeting is the year end social. Susan Reed, of Middle Georgia WGC,
reports their club is having an open photo contest for their first koi show on
March 18-27, 2005. Any koi hobbyist
(not a dealer) can enter and you do not have to be a club member. Dr. Lester Berkow has agreed to judge the
photos to pick the winners. For
information, contact Robert Reed @ (478) 827-0570. Dot Wilbanks, of Moto Kara Koi Kai, reports Ron
Goforth’s only sister recently passed away so they cancelled their club meeting
since Ron is the teacher for the club. (Our sympathy goes out to Ron and his
family. Koi clubs make us like
family) Melinda Christopher, of Olympic
K,G&WGC, reports they just finished their pond tour in August and
it was successful partly because it brought new club members. Geoffrey Huntley, of Piedmont K&WG
Society, reports they are working hard on the Charlotte Koi Show the
first weekend in November. They would
like to see 300 koi entered this year.
They also have speakers, raffles, a large vendor tent and a koi
auction. Really a one stop event if you
are in the area or want to fly in for the show. In August they held a social pot luck. The club voted to extend their offer to host the 2008 AKCA
Seminar since Phoenix won 2007. Their
September club meeting will feature a speaker from South Africa Koi Keeper in South
Africa. The Pioneer Valley
WG&KC newsletter reports their guest speaker for August spoke on
Fish Health During the Long Hot Summer.
The speaker for September will talk on Wetland Buffer Gardens. Dorothy Connors, of Rhode Island &
SE Massachusetts KC, reports they held their first
official meeting to introduce their club officers, introduce members, announce
membership in AKCA and to discuss the club by-laws. The next 4 club meetings have been scheduled at members
homes. They have started to create
their club website. One of their club
members has enrolled in the KHA class.
The club has offered to assist the Pioneer Valley club with their koi
show next year. They received their
AKCA books and Guides. John Collier, of
Tulsa Koi Society, reports they are hard at work planning the
2005 AKCA Seminar. The seminar budget
was approved and registration information sent to KOI USA for the Jan/Feb
issue. In July, a presentation was
given with photos taken at the 2004 AKCA Seminar in Hawaii. In August the club held their annual picnic
and then drove to a local breeder for desert.
The lecture planned for the September meeting is on koi nutrition. The Ventura KC newsletter
reports Doug Dahl gave an informative lecture and slide presentation on
backyard koi breeding at their August meeting.
The lecture clearly explained why some koi are so expensive and the
point that breeding koi can be expensive was made. Howard Oxman was presented the club Koi Person of the Year Award
at the meeting for his tireless effort on the club newsletter. The September meeting will be held at a
Santa Barbara home with an 18,0000 gallon koi pond, a foam fractionator,
aquatic garden stream, low fish

o
Written report submitted by Burt: John Hathaway, of Pacific Wonderland,
reported that on August 28th members had a private informal
gathering with Greg Speichert, publisher of Water Gardening Magazine. They had a very large turnout for this
informal meeting which was very informative for their members. Their regular September meeting, held at
Wayne King’s home, focused part of the business agenda on how PWKC could
support KHV research; ideas on fundraising were discussed. Henry Culpepper, of Orlando Area
K&PC, said that most of the club members did OK from both
hurricane Charley & Frances; only one koi lost. Ruth Nichols, of the Tampa Club, lost her home due to a fire
caused by her portable generator and had no homeowner’s insurance. Henry’s club started gathering donations for
her & the first check to her was for $11,000. Contributions were from all over, not just Florida. Her koi were saved but she lost her 3 cats. At their last meeting, Mike McMahon did a
slide presentation of his trip to England & the BKKS show. The club voted to be a partner in the
Central Florida Koi Show for March 11-13 in Orlando @ the Holiday Inn;
fundraiser got $1,200 from just the club members for Ruth Nichols. Johnny Foster, of Nature’s Coast
K&WGC, said they are still without power from Frances; problem
is high winds & a lot of rain for 2 days; their koi seem OK so far. Their last meeting was postponed a week
because of Charley; went to a ginger farm in Gainesville; had over 20 members
attend & had a picnic. Still

Society, said there has been a lot of rain; trees down everywhere &

9/25. Kenneth Wong, of Dallas Koi

their next meeting next Sunday about quarantining; everything is quiet. Jesus Brito, of Oklahoma KC,
said the koi show went well. Don &

vendors they ever had; also had the best quality of koi in several years. 22 entrants from all over; next meeting is
the mud pond pull @ Chuck Downs. Lucia
Rose, of San Francisco Bay KC, said the koi sale & auction @
Peters & Sons will be Sept. 25th. Last meeting was a barbeque with a lot of new members; next
meeting will have a speaker from UC Davis.
Linda Montgomery, of Cascade K&GFS, said they had their
barbeque picnic; starting planning for PNKCA Seminar ’05 as they are hosting
it; also planning Xmas party in January.
ZNAOC’s last meeting was @ the Ballous; Gloria Ballou was
scheduled to speak on water plants but the business part of the meeting was
about their upcoming koi show in October and took up too much of the meeting
time. Debby Young, of Southern
Arizona KC, said they had a big rain storm that took out part of their
backyard & a tree. The club is
preparing for their koi show Nov. 11-13; have revised their by-laws. Carl Fridenstine, of Santa Clara Valley Koi,

will be @ Green Acres Nursery in Roseville on Nov. 6-7th. Ray Jordan, of Texas Koi & Fancy
Goldfish Society, said they are busy working on the 13th
Annual show which is this month. All
signs are pointing to this being their best & most attended; pre-show
publicity has been going fantastic; expect a major article in the San Antonio
newspaper about the show to be published the weekend before their event. They are also having the military
bloodmobile from Brooke Army Medical Hospital there taking blood donations for
our troops in Afghanistan & Iraq.
Donors will receive a gift certificate for a Whisky Barrel Garden from

o
Written report submitted by Larry: Ladean Paden, of Prairieland K&PS,
said they will end its 3 part series on Sept. 11th. Huge thanks to Doug Dahl for letting them
use his presentation. Many new pond
owners required a quick learning curve that this presentation covered. They end the series with plants in and
around your pond. Election of officers
in October and end of the year is in sight.
A new president is in training.
The information AKCA has made available for her has made her job a lot
easier. Huge thanks to Larry for his
advice and guidance thru difficult times.
Shelly Klinger, of Central Illinois Water Gardeners, said
they will meet Sept. 11th at the home of Beth Smith. Their guest speakers will be Julie Johnson
& Ed Hernandez. Julie is the

algae problems and general pond fall shutdown.
Kathy Barnard, of the Gulf Coast Koi Society, reports
there is nothing new to report. Sandy
Fisher, of the Mid-Michigan Pond & Water Garden Society,
said their Sept. meeting will be at Cindy Winters and the guest speaker will be
Ginny Knag; her topic will be using Michigan’s wild plants in and around your
pond. She noted that their pond tour
was a huge success with many members helping to make it fun and
successful. No reports from Ohio
Koi Club, St. Louis Water Gardening Society, West
Plains Water Gardening Society, Madison Area Pond Society
or Cherokee Strip Water Garden Society.
o
Written report submitted by Kelly Houston: Inland Koi Society’s
next general meeting is Sept. 26th at Mystic Koi in Upland. Host are Sandy & Bill Debrosky; son Sean
will speak and have a question and answer period. Their pond tour will be June 26th, 2005.
o
Written report submitted by Joyce Glenn: Bob Waag, of Florida West Coast,
described his area as a war zone after the two devastating hurricanes. If all stays calm, they will hold their club
swap meet this Sunday. The meet has
already become relocated because the original site was ravaged by the
storms. Apparently all his koi are
staying at the bottom of the pond; he does have netting to keep the herons
out. Club members have been using
emergency fish kits (temporary ponds) to help.
Leroy Taba, of Hawaii Goldfish & Carp
Page

o
Association,
said that the Hawaii United Okinawan Assoc. Festival over the Labor Day weekend
at the Kapiolani Park was a very successful event for the club. About 35,000 to 40,000 people showed up. Their booth got moved around but they had
one of the best setups ever and the club is looking forward to next year when
they can make it even better and draw more attention to the organization. Dave Peebler, of Koi Club of Kansas,
sent the club newsletter. In it was an
article about koi teeth along with a photo.
It appears they lose them periodically and they are replaced with the
fish’s natural growth. Their theme for
their next meeting is Italian gourmet meal and to get into the spirit of
things, they are wearing togas. Joyce
tried but was unable to reach Atlanta KC, Charleston Showa
KC, Washington Koi K&WGS and Tampa Bay
K&WGC.
o
Written
report submitted by Bruno Kudrecki: Koi Kichi & WGC
reports that at their August meeting they had a great meeting with lot’s of
food and friends; their guest speaker was Tom Holder, of Koi Care Kennel. He spoke about aeromonas, how and why it
attacks our koi. They discussed and all
agreed that a fundraising auction for the AKCA KHV research project would be a
great way to contribute to this cause.
They will ask all the local clubs to join us in an effort to help raise
funds. Nancy Morales was presented the
AKCA Koi Person of the Year award; she works very hard for the club.
o
Written
report submitted by Louie Hernandez:
ZNA So Cal’s last
meeting was hosted by two of their newer members, Bob & Mary Magiona @
their home in Palos Verdes Estates.
After a continental breakfast, over 40 of their members were treated to
a house, garden, and pond tour; the Magionas treated them to a delicious Sushi
lunch after the general meeting. In
November they will have their annual koi auction at Cal State University Long
Beach. They have meetings planned thru
March, 2005.
o
Written
report submitted by Harlan Glenn: Chuck Poppe, of ZNA
Potomac, reported that their clubs annual koi show will take place on
Sept. 11-12th at the National Arboretum.
Linda Solis, of Koi Club of San Diego, reported (via the
club newsletter) that the club hopes to put in a request to hold the 2009 AKCA
Seminar in San Diego. They were
disappointed in learning that the 2007 Seminar was given to the Valley of the
Sun Koi Club in Phoenix. The club 2005
koi show is planned for February at the Del Mar Fairgrounds the same weekend as
the Spring Home & Garden Show. This
means that a lot more people should be there.
o
Written
report submitted by Scott Zehm: Richard Adema, of Canada
Koi Club, reports their club had their pond tour and barbeque last
month. They had 6 ponds on the
tour. The tour was for club members and

Their next meeting will have an open discussion session. Bobby Putnam, of So. Carolina
K&WGS, reported that their August meeting was held at the home of
Peggy & Bill Isaacs with Chris Mills, from Emperor Aquatics, as their guest
speaker. He gave an excellent talk on
UV lights. Everyone enjoyed seeing Bill’s
large fish, ponds and filter systems.
Their September meeting will be held at the home of Gary & Anne
Marie Andrews; their speaker for that meeting will be Ken Rust from Absolute
Aquatics. Their membership is growing
and the interest and the Koi & Water Garden are certainly growing in their
area. Scott tried but was unable to
contact North Texas Water Garden Society and Eastern
Iowa Pond Society.
o
Written
report submitted by Phil Hunter: Linda Siler, of the Springfield
K&WGS, reports that the August meeting was held at the home of Gail

Water Garden & Koi Society, reports that the club
held its 5th annual Koi show on august 28th & 29th

Charles Phelps was the Judge.
The club also had a pond tour featuring seven member ponds. The August meeting was held at the home of
Eugene & Rose Holt. It was the
awards dinner for the koi show. Greg
Bates, of the Capitol Area K&WGC, reports that the club’s
annual pond tour was held on July 24 –25th. The tour was pushed back one week this year
so as to not compete with the Lansing Area Garden Tour. Clubs with no reports this month are: Shasta K&WGC, Dayton
